Chaperon, Pamela A. Staszewski, Heather L. Vavrina

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect that a five-day horseback riding program had on the standing and/or sitting balance of children ages eight to eighteen afflicted with a variety of disabling diagnoses. The stated hypothesis is that after participating in a five-day session of therapeutic riding, subjects will show significant improvement in standing and/or sitting balance as measured by the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT). The 15 subjects tested using FRT and the 17 subjects tested using the MFRT were all participants of the Cheff Center riding program. Subjects were …

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter

As educators and future educators, we will be working with students from diverse groups and all walks of life. Many of us enter this field entrenched in our own culture with no real understanding of how others' life experiences have influenced their values and beliefs. The multicultural courses in the College of Education force us to examine how we came to adopt our values and from where our beliefs originated. No other course in the graduate curriculum forces us to challenge the myths and stereotypes of American society as profoundly as these courses.

Molecular Analysis Of Microbial Diversity Within Yucca Mountain, Yingchun Wu Jan 1998

Molecular Analysis Of Microbial Diversity Within Yucca Mountain, Yingchun Wu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yucca Mountain is the proposed site for a high-level nuclear waste repository. As part of the site characterization project, an estimation of microbial diversity was conducted. In this study, the 16S ribosomal DNA sequences of culturable isolates were determined and used for tentatively identification of bacterial strains. The results of identification by 16S rDNA sequence data were also compared to MIDI analysis, an independent phenotypic approach for bacterial identification; It is accepted that culturable strains only represent a small portion of microbial community in the environment. In order to eliminate bias associated with cultivation, total DNA was extracted from rock …

Critical Incidents In The Gaming Industry: Perceptions Of Guests And Employees, Lesley Jeanne Johnson Jan 1998

Critical Incidents In The Gaming Industry: Perceptions Of Guests And Employees, Lesley Jeanne Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During the service encounter or "moment of truth" the customer judges the quality of the service organization. Not all guest-employee service encounters, however, are equally important. For every organization there are probably particular. service encounters that are critical to customer satisfaction. Before they can initiate efforts to service their customers, service firms must first identify and manage critical service encounters. Using the environment of the gaming industry, this exploratory research investigated the concept of identifying and evaluating critical service encounters from the perspectives of both guests and customer-contact employees and measured the level of congruence/incongruence between the two parties involved …

Neighborhood Councils: A Family-Driven Approach To Community Change, Merlinda Raquel Gallegos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Following times of social upheavals, especially when social tensions exist in ethnically diverse and lower class neighborhoods, the U.S. government has provided increased aid to the poor, and new community-based initiatives have emerged. This dissertation focuses on Nevada's neighborhood-based, community-driven, collaborative approach to providing services in low-income areas: Family Resource Centers. The purpose of this exploratory study is to develop strategies which will increase community participation in Nevada's Family Resource Centers' neighborhood councils; After two years of participant observation and the use of focus groups in four neighborhood councils, seven dimensions emerged concerning strategies to increase voluntary participation in neighborhood …

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For more than a century, the most predominant form of instruction in higher education has been classroom-based and instructor-led. Today, this traditional approach to learning is being challenged by new technologies such as multimedia, telecommunications, and the Internet. It has been suggested that the effectiveness of traditional pedagogical methods in alternative learning environments may be resolved through the creation of a new domain for educational interaction referred to as online education (Harasim, 1990); There has been much research focused on the advantages of teaching university courses online (Davis, Odell, Abbitt, Amos, 1999; Hiltz, 1994; Harasim, 1990). However, there is little …

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee Jan 1998

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise in Reading the Interracial Canon has two purposes. First, it offers detailed readings of three American novels: An Imperative Duty by William Dean Howells (1891), What Answer? by Anna Dickinson (1868), and Kingsblood Royal by Sinclair Lewis (1947). These readings are accomplished within the context of the "interracial canon", a set of writings dealing with the expression of various aspects of interracial relationships. The interracial canon, as well as its specialized vocabulary and unique theoretical outlook, is roughly sketched in an introduction and several appendices.

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey Jan 1998

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This following study serves as an attempt to apply theoretical questions to the phenomenon of striptease. I argue that striptease can be more fully understood as an act guided by the rules of performance. Strippers, and to a lesser extent the audience, can then be seen as actors employing a fantasy phase to sustain their respective roles within the charade of performance sex. Strippers and audiences are also players within the concept of performance itself, meaning they are simultaneously subject to and authors of the phenomenon. Using a biosocial approach, I explore the psychological, cultural, and physiological, etc., cues that …

Equilibrium Studies Of Ion Sorption On Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Derek Alan Sloop Jan 1998

Equilibrium Studies Of Ion Sorption On Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Derek Alan Sloop

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The partitioning of solutes between the solid mineral and aqueous phase frequently controls the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface environment. Consequently, parametric studies were performed to investigate the equilibrium sorption of Pb(II), Sr(II), CrO{dollar}\sb4\sp{2-}{dollar} and SeO{dollar}\sb3\sp{2-}{dollar} ions on zeolitized tuff from Rainier Mesa, Nevada, and on clinoptilolite from Jordan Valley, Oregon. The fractional uptake of the ions on the zeolitized tuff was investigated so that sorption isotherms and partitioning coefficients describing the affinity of the ions for the zeolitized tuff could be calculated. The fractional uptake of the ions on the clinoptilolite was investigated so that a …

Development Of A Phosphotriesterase Enzyme Assay For Determination Of Organophosphate Pesticides, Yan Wang Jan 1998

Development Of A Phosphotriesterase Enzyme Assay For Determination Of Organophosphate Pesticides, Yan Wang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Phosphotriesterase catalyzes the hydrolysis of a wide range of organophosphate insecticides such as paraoxon and parathion and nerve toxins such as soman and sarin. This project resulted in the development of novel phosphotriesterase enzyme assays to measure paraoxon and other representatives of the organophosphate pesticides. The assay is based on a substrate-dependent change in pH at the local vicinity of the enzyme. This enzyme, which was labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), was immobilized on polymethylmethacrylate beads and the pH change is monitored through the pH-sensitive quantum yield of FITC. Analytes were measured using a KinExA fluorescence analyzer. This assay can …

Paleolimnology And Paleoecology Of The Coal Valley Region, Lincoln County, Nevada, Anthony Dean Feig Jan 1998

Paleolimnology And Paleoecology Of The Coal Valley Region, Lincoln County, Nevada, Anthony Dean Feig

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During Pleistocene time, Coal Valley, Nevada, was situated between a pluvial climatic zone to the north and a non-pluvial climactic zone to the south. The Coal Lake section represents {dollar}>{dollar}20,000 years of continuous deposition, recording a saline lake phase (Early Coal Lake) present since at least 32,000 BP, evolving to a freshwater lake (Coal Lake Intermediate) {dollar}\sim{dollar}28,000 BP. Maximum lake development (290 km{dollar}\sp2{dollar} in area) was within 2000 years of {dollar}\sim{dollar}20,000 BP, and was probably persistent through deglaciation. Ostracode ecology suggests that water salinity varied little through time, which may be indicative of consistently low ambient temperatures, high precipitation …

A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart Jan 1998

A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A macroscopic analysis of 604 skeletal remains was undertaken at the Museo Arqueologico de San Miguel de Azapa (MASMA) in order to ascertain the rates of porotic hyperostosis in the prehistoric populations of northern Chile. Porotic hyperostosis has been recognized as being a useful indicator of nutritional stress, in particular, iron-deficiency anemia. In the Americas, this pathology has primarily been associated with maize-dependency and pathogen load. Contrary to expectations, results reveal that pre-agricultural populations have 93% of porotic hyperostosis while the agricultural populations show a rate of 66%. This data does not support the maize-dependency model. It is suggested, instead, …

Philosophical Foundations, Social Power And Social Work Practice, Timothy Duane Hamilton Jan 1998

Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys In Event Spaces, Jonathan R Wynn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys in Event Spaces proposes a new theory and methodology for Sociology to better investigate and describe the social experiences of individuals. I call this new set of theories and methodologies Beat Sociology--I have developed this project utilizing the work of Beat writers (Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs), as well as social theorists (particularly Walter Benjamin and C. Wright Mills). Drawing from critical theory, postmodernism and ethnography, I develop three central 'themes' that help facilitate my project: identity, space, and migrancy. Through auto-ethnography I explore three types of Las Vegas spaces: event spaces, casino spaces and Fremont Street. …

Population Size Estimation From Mark-Resighting Surveys, Huawen He Jan 1998

Population Size Estimation From Mark-Resighting Surveys, Huawen He

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We consider the problem of estimating the size of a closed population based on the results of a certain type of marking-resighting sampling design. The design is similar to the commonly used multiple capture-recapture design, yet in some cases economically more feasible and easy to use. Sampling is done by first tagging a number of randomly selected animals with visible markers and later randomly sighting them (for instance, for large animals by visually sampling from a helicopter) and counting the number of tagged animals; In this paper, by using the above mentioned sampling scheme we present the maximum likelihood estimation …
