Ecology, Wilderness Selection, And The Salmonhuckleberry Roadless Area, Jason Scot Barker Jan 1998

Ecology, Wilderness Selection, And The Salmonhuckleberry Roadless Area, Jason Scot Barker

Dissertations and Theses

In the 1970s, the Forest Service used ecology in the process that led to the SalmonHuckleberry roadless area in the Mount Hood National Forest becoming a Congressionally designated Wilderness in 1984. This case study of the history of SalmonHuckleberry roadless area confirms the criticism made by environmentalists that noncommercial forest values have received much less priority than commercial uses in forest planning during the late 1960s and 1970s. This study of the area also reveals that the Forest Service's planning process was fundamentally flawed because Forest Service planners often lacked scientific data to support management decisions and downplayed the sigificnace …

Bone Tool Technology : Measurements Of Curation And The Spatial Distribution Of Bone And Antler Artifacts From A Pacific Northwest Coast Plankhouse Site, Deborah Davis

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a method of assessing and measuring the amount of curation behavior present in a bone and antler tool assemblage. Using lithic analysis as a guide, curation is defined by the amount of energy invested in the tool manufacturing process along with the overall complexity of each artifact. The Meier site (35C05), a Chinookan plankhouse site near Portland, Oregon was used to test the hypothesis that people will use an expedient (low energy investment) technology when there is an abundance of raw material available, low group mobility, and low material transportation constraints.

Enculturing Nature, William Lloyd Cornett Jan 1998

Enculturing Nature, William Lloyd Cornett

Dissertations and Theses

Human activity is embedded within a myriad of seldom-acknowledged ecological relationships. Anthropology and ecology, two holistic disciplines concerned with these activities, struggle with the topic of human/nature relationships because both are grounded within larger western discourses separating human behaviors from those of the natural world. This thesis examines the histories of anthropology and ecology in the 20th Century, and the effect these disciplines have had upon the formulation of contemporary urban worldviews that are based upon the separation of humans from nature.

Tangible Or Intangible - Is That The Question - Conflict In The Texas Tax Classification System Of Computer Software Comment., Christine E. Reinhard Jan 1998

Tangible Or Intangible - Is That The Question - Conflict In The Texas Tax Classification System Of Computer Software Comment., Christine E. Reinhard

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Comment evaluates tax classification of computer software in Texas under recent statutory provisions and case law. The author focuses on whether computer software constitutes tangible or intangible property and whether computer software should be taxable or not. Determining property classification is not easy—the term “computer software” is difficult to define, and the multitude of different types of computer software further obscures the formation of a uniform definition. The Texas legislature’s ability to tax both tangible and intangible property makes classifying computer software as either type unnecessary. Texas can resolve the conflict in its tax classification system, wherein computer software …

Human Cloning: A Choice Or An Echo, George J. Annas Jan 1998

Human Cloning: A Choice Or An Echo, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

The chant is "cloning, cloning, cloning"; but the echo is "choice, choice, choice." From all the hoopla about human cloning as a human choice it would seem that cloning must be the most important scientific issue of our age. My intent in this Commentary is not to join this chorus, but to take advantage of cloning's high visibility to explore the nature of the choice it offers. What is it that makes human cloning at once so appealing to a few and so repulsive to most? The answer, I think, can be found in Roman mythology: Cloning recalls Ovid's myth …

Susanna And The Elders: A Note On The Regulation Of Families, Carol Weisbrod Jan 1998

Susanna And The Elders: A Note On The Regulation Of Families, Carol Weisbrod

Utah Law Review

The title of Robert Dahl's book, Who Governs, seems to capture the approach of many conversations on family governance. In an approach which parallels our dominant political theory, we focus on the question who, as an individual, governs, and ask how that power to govern can be better shared with others. Often the goal is equality in the family, at least as between adults, and when we consider this, we use a model of democratic political decision making. The focus is on individuals in a nuclear family. The approach is not new. It is the stance that John Stuart Mill …

Against Campaign Finance Reform, Kathleen M. Sullivan Jan 1998

Against Campaign Finance Reform, Kathleen M. Sullivan

Utah Law Review

Buckley v. Valeo, the two-decades-old decision that gave limited First Amendment protection to the outlay of political money, has become the great white whale of constitutional law: the more elusive its demise becomes, the greater the intellectual exertion expended in its pursuit To recap the highlights of Buckley very briefly: Two decades ago in the wake of the Watergate scandal, Congress sought to impose a comprehensive scheme of limitations on the amounts of money that could be given and spent in political campaigns. The Supreme Court found in Buckley that Congress had gotten things half right, and upheld the contribution …

The Bioavailability Of Sediment Bound Tributyltin (Tbt), Nicholas Dingle Pope Jan 1998

The Bioavailability Of Sediment Bound Tributyltin (Tbt), Nicholas Dingle Pope

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Tributyltin is arguably the most toxic compound ever to be deliberately introduced into the marine environment as an ingredient of antifouling paints. It has had widespread toxic effects on a range of marine organisms, with some gastropod species being particularly sensitive. Effects of TBT on non-target species have resulted in partial bans on its use in many countries, so that new inputs to the water column have decreased in most areas. One of the physicochemical features of TBT is that it is readily sequestered by suspended particulates due to its low solubility and its hydrophobicity, therefore becoming incorporated into estuarine …

The Modes Of Action Of Toxicants On The Cardiac Physiology Of The Blue Mussel, Mytilus Edulis, And The Common Shore Crab, Carcinus Maenas, Timothy Mark Curtis Jan 1998

The Modes Of Action Of Toxicants On The Cardiac Physiology Of The Blue Mussel, Mytilus Edulis, And The Common Shore Crab, Carcinus Maenas, Timothy Mark Curtis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The primary aim of this thesis was to establish the mode of action of the heavy metal, copper, on the cardiac physiology of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Exposure of specimens of M.edulis to dissolved copper led to a decrease in heart rate and an increase in heart rate variability (HRV). The concentration of copper causing a 50% reduction in heart rate was found to be 0.8µM, while the concentration causing a 50% increase in HRV was 0.06µM (48 h EC50s). Simultaneous measurements of valve activity indicated that the observed bradycardia was not caused by valve closure. Subsequently, it was …

Evaluation Of Stream Meiofauna As A Monitor Of Trace Metal Contamination, Susan Mary Burton Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Stream Meiofauna As A Monitor Of Trace Metal Contamination, Susan Mary Burton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Members of the meiobenthos have been used extensively to determine the effects of anthropogenic perturbation in marine systems (Coull & Chandler, 1992). Despite this, the meiofauna has been virtually excluded from freshwater pollution monitoring. This thesis aimed to address this research caveat, by evaluating the potential of stream meiofauna for monitoring metal-contamination. Meiofaunal communities were sampled from streams in SW England representing a gradient in metal contamination. Environmental variables in these streams were also measured to identify the important forcing agents structuring the stream benthos. Multivariate techniques demonstrated Cu, either alone or in combination with other environmental variables was of …

Physiological And Cellular Level Responses Of Enteromorpha Spp. To Chemical And Thermal Stress, Stella Anne Lewis Jan 1998

Physiological And Cellular Level Responses Of Enteromorpha Spp. To Chemical And Thermal Stress, Stella Anne Lewis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The aims of this project were to investigate the cellular stress response (CSR) in Enteromorpha spp. and assess the potential of the Stress-70 protein (an indicator of the CSR) as a biomarker of pollutant exposure and acquired tolerance in Enteromorpha spp., compared with conventional physiological endpoints of toxicity. Cross-reactivity of a commercial Stress-70 antibody with E. intestinalis proteins was determined and used to develop an assay for Stress-70. Using this assay E. intestinalis was found to exhibit a typical heat shock response. Stress-70 proved to be a relatively insensitive biomarker of copper exposure and did not appear to be involved …

The Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Complex Effluents Using Invertebrate Biomarkers, Katrina Nicola Astley Jan 1998

The Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Complex Effluents Using Invertebrate Biomarkers, Katrina Nicola Astley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A suite of biomarkers was developed using the crab Carcinus maenas and the mussel Mytilus edulis as test organisms. The ability of the biomarkers to differentiate amongst the major toxic components and to indicate the concentration of chemical mixtures was evaluated in the laboratory. Biomarkers were also applied in a field trial and their potential to monitor environmental water quality in a chemically contaminated estuary investigated. The results from the biomarker assays were compared with and validated against two commonly used toxicity tests (Tisbe battagliai LC-50, and Microtox®). Novel methods for recognising patterns of biomarker responses were developed and assessed. …

Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden Jan 1998

Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden

Graduate Research Papers

Although recent trends in art education emphasize a discipline based approach to instruction, the elementary art experience often focuses on the process components of art production, overlooking other significant areas of study (Adams, 1992; Garoian, 1988; Hickman, 1994 ). One way in which educators can help make art experiences more meaningful to students is to use response journals for viewing artwork. Educators have established the use of response journals as a worthy practice by providing students with opportunities to develop greater understanding of content material and by providing teachers with valuable insight into students thinking through shared dialogue (Hall, Crawford …

Promotion Of Student Learning By Small, Rural School Districts As They Design And Integrate Technology Plans, Randall A. Bohman Jan 1998

Promotion Of Student Learning By Small, Rural School Districts As They Design And Integrate Technology Plans, Randall A. Bohman

Graduate Research Papers

How will small, rural school districts promote student learning by the design and integration of technology plans? In addition, other elements that affect the successful implementation of technology include time, money, and attitude. Realistic goals should be established based on these elements. Research included in this paper focuses on concepts and applications that could be implemented in a school with limited financial resources.

If technology is to have an impact on student learning, it must be used in ways that reflect a new understanding of learning. Technology not only may assist traditional instruction, but it may also aid in the …

The Writing Portfolio : An Authentic Assessment Tool, Sondra L. Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

Using writing portfolios as an ongoing assessment technique in the second grade classroom was a rewarding experience for my students and me. Our collaboration through conferences provided many connections between instruction and assessment. The students even though they represented a range of abilities were able to assess their own work and grow from their own reflections. Their writing abilities emerged and were captured in their portfolios. Authentic assessments were displayed with pride as each of the students shared their portfolios with their parents.
