Follicular Development In Gilts Selected For High Ovulation Rate And Embryo Survival Versus Randomly Selected Control Line Gilts, Hui-Wen Yen, Rodger K. Johnson, Dwane R. Zimmerman
Nebraska Swine Reports
The patterns of follicular development during the proestrous period were compared in gilts selected for an index of high ovulation rate and high prenatal survival (White Line-2, WL-2) and randomly selected controls (White Line-1, WL-1) on days 0, 2, 3, 4, 5 and estrus after induced luteolysis with PGF2on day 13 (day 0) of the estrous cycle. Numbers of follicles (F) equal or greater than 2 mm in diameter were categorized and recorded as follows: small (SF, 2 to 2.9 mm), medium-1 (M1F, 3 to 4.9 mm), medium-2 (M2F, 5 to 6.9 mm) and large (LF, equal or above 7 …

Efficacy Of Once (1x) Versus Twice (2x) Daily Physical Or Fence-Line Contact With Boars For Stimulating Earlier Puberty In Gilts, Dwane Zimmerman, Thomas Mcgargill, Norm Rohda
Nebraska Swine Reports
The effectiveness of twice daily (2x) versus once daily (1x) boar exposure (BE) and the possible interaction of frequency of BE and type of BE (physical, PBE, versus fence-line, FBE) for stimulating earlier puberty in gilts was evaluated. Gilts (n=120) from the R-LS line of the gene pool herd at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were, within litter, assigned randomly to two frequencies of BE (1x versus 2x per day) and two types of BE (PBE versus FBE) plus one additional treatment where gilts were maintained in continuous fence-line contact with boars (CFBE). Treatments were initiated when gilts in each replicate …

Mallard Duckling Growth And Survival In Relation To Aquatic Invertebrates, Robert R. Cox, Mark A. Hanson, Christianne C. Roy, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Douglas H. Johnson, Malcolm G. Butler
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Identification and assessment of the relative importance of factors affecting duckling growth and survival are essential for effective management of mallards on breeding areas. For each of 3 years (1993-95), we placed Fl-generation wild mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) females on experimental wetlands and allowed them to mate, nest, and rear broods for 17 days. We manipulated invertebrate densities by introducing fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) at high densities in half of the wetlands on which broods were confined. Day- 17 body mass of surviving ducklings (n = 183) was greater for ducklings that were heavier at hatch; the …
The Past Is Prologue, Lia Cook
The Past Is Prologue, Lia Cook
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Since the early 1970s I have been interested in the construction of imagery in textiles and how the imagery that is an essential part of the structure can be altered through painting, dyeing, and finishing processes. My early pieces used a simple distortion of the vertical horizontal threads to create undulating parallel lines that defined what I called the "fabric landscape", a piece of fabric laid over a relief surface. In 1974-5 I applied photographs directly to the surface of my woven structures, sensitizing the cotton cords with photosensitive chemicals and processing the whole weaving as one would a photograph. …
Weaving For Your Life: Creating Textiles In Dolp A, Nepal, Anne M. Johnson
Weaving For Your Life: Creating Textiles In Dolp A, Nepal, Anne M. Johnson
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
High in the Himalayan mountains, two weeks walk from the nearest road, weaving is a necessity, not an option, for the women of the Dolpa region of Nepal. A woman weaves all of her life, and must weave for her family to survive the difficult life at this high altitude. Picture three weavers working outside in the late winter snowfall, seated on the ground within a low-walled enclosure. There can be more light and warmth outside, rather than inside, their stone houses. Weaving also provides a place of community, where men, women, and children gather to card fibers, spin, weave, …
Recreating A Warp-Faced Compound Weave With The Jacquard Mechanism -Considering Heizo Tatsumura-, Keiko Kobayashi
Recreating A Warp-Faced Compound Weave With The Jacquard Mechanism -Considering Heizo Tatsumura-, Keiko Kobayashi
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Recreating of Ancient Fabrics
The technique of how the Warp-faced compound weave was once woven has been the focus of study for many specialists in Japan. It was around 1921 that Heizo Tatsumura began to recreate ancient textiles from the 7th and 8th centuries, found in the Shosoin Repository and the Horyuji Temple. He used the new Jacquard mechanism, which had been imported from France in 1873 with great dexterity. With this mechanism, along with his gifted creativity and inventiveness Tatsumura produced new techniques for the purpose of recreation. The very modem Tatsumura chose the Jacquard mechanism as his tool …
Weaving In Taspinar: A Case Study Of Using Samplers In Carpet Weaving, Sumru Belger Krody
Weaving In Taspinar: A Case Study Of Using Samplers In Carpet Weaving, Sumru Belger Krody
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The functions of samplers in needlework, as records of patterns and educational exercises, are well known. But the uses of samplers in carpet weaving have not been subject to serious study. This paper based on a case study conducted in the region around the town of Taspinar in Central Anatolia, will describe the appearance of carpet samplers, the role they play in carpet weaving, how they serve the weavers, and why they are important to weavers.
The field research conducted in the village of Taspinar was a result of responsibility undertaken in early 1996 of documenting a small group (15) …
Tracing Intricate Thread Control Systems: The Bamboo Drum Or Swine Basket Loom To The Tc-L, Carol D. Westfall
Tracing Intricate Thread Control Systems: The Bamboo Drum Or Swine Basket Loom To The Tc-L, Carol D. Westfall
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
I use the word "primitive" with great care and caution and a certain humility for we now send men and women into space clad in triaxially woven fabrics which stem from a basic hexagonal basket structure perfected eons ago by some "primitive" Chinese artisan. I am consistently amazed by the extraordinary accomplishments of our common ancestors.
Man's need to adorn his or her body with imagery which acts as a signifier of status or aesthetic is a time honored tradition. The transference of this imagery onto textiles was a natural occurrence, once the need for garments was established - either …

No Best Answer?, Lewis A. Kornhauser
No Best Answer?, Lewis A. Kornhauser
Faculty Articles
When one turns from conflicts of rights to conflicts of value, the claim that a right answer exists is transformed into a claim that there is a best answer to every collective decision problem. This claim is often attributed to economic analysts of law, in general, and to advocates of cost-benefit analysis, in particular. Opponents of the claim generally rely on the literature in ethics that denies the existence of a best answer to many individual decisions. These opponents, however, too often simply adopt, without modification, the arguments for incommensurability in ethics to problems of law. In this Article, I …
The Workplace In A Racially Diverse Society: Preliminary Thoughts On The Role Of Labor And Employment Law, Cynthia Estlund
The Workplace In A Racially Diverse Society: Preliminary Thoughts On The Role Of Labor And Employment Law, Cynthia Estlund
Faculty Articles
But the workplace is perhaps the most important sphere in which significant integration has taken place. A combination of legal pressures, primarily driven by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and voluntary efforts have made the workplace an arena of comparative integration. Moreover, it is an arena in which individuals interact on a daily basis, often over years, within a common enterprise which necessitates, to varying degrees, trust and cooperation. The workplace is thus one of the very few settings in which adults spend a significant amount of time interacting intensively and constructively with others from different …
The Concept Of Compliance As A Function Of Competing Conceptions Of International Law, Benedict Kingsbury
The Concept Of Compliance As A Function Of Competing Conceptions Of International Law, Benedict Kingsbury
Faculty Articles
The purpose of this article is to challenge the tendency in the existing literature to view "compliance" simply as "correspondence of behavior with legal rules." This tendency is intelligibly based in a theoretical view that law can properly be defined and understood as a body of rules and expresses a practical concern to get on with the important task of producing empirical studies of compliance. The logical corollary is that a reasonable degree of conformity between these rules and actual behavior is necessary to an efficacious legal system, so that recurrent and widespread non-conformity with rules would usually call into …
Before Cyberspace: Legal Transitions In Property Rights Regimes, Richard A. Epstein
Before Cyberspace: Legal Transitions In Property Rights Regimes, Richard A. Epstein
Faculty Articles
The innovations of technology neither preclude nor require fundamental transformations in the legal regime that governs them. In all cases the key issue can be framed as follows: because transitions in legal regimes are always costly and sometimes go astray, can one show that the rules of the past are so ill-fitting that some conscious and costly deviation from them is appropriate? No categorical answer is possible, for so much depends on how ill-fitting the old legal system is, how painful the transition is, and how well the new system would operate. The best we can do is to establish …
