Rizal’S Morga And Views Of Philippine History, Ambeth R. Ocampo Jan 1998

Rizal’S Morga And Views Of Philippine History, Ambeth R. Ocampo

History Department Faculty Publications

Antonio de Morga, lieutenant governor of the Philippines in the late sixteenth century, described the food of the indios as follows: Their daily fare is composed of: lice crushed in wooden pillars and when cooked is called morisqueta (this is the staple throughout the land); cooked fish which they have in abundance; pork, venison, mountain buffaloes which they call carabaos, beef and fish which they know is best when it has started to mt and stink (Retana 1909,174). Reading this text in the British Museum 280 years later, Rizal was so incensed that he later responded in print with: This …

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of The Cuticular Hydrocarbons From Parasitic Wasps Of The Genus Muscidifurax, Ulrich R. Bernier, David A. Carlson, Christopher J. Geden Jan 1998

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of The Cuticular Hydrocarbons From Parasitic Wasps Of The Genus Muscidifurax, Ulrich R. Bernier, David A. Carlson, Christopher J. Geden

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Parasitic Hymenoptera can be difficult to identify by conventional taxonomic techniques. Examination of the cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) provides a basis for chemotaxonomic differentiation, which may lead to the discovery of pheromones, and can be a means of examining colonies for species cross-contamination. The parasitic wasps examined were Muscidifurax raptor, M. zaraptor, M. uniraptor, and the gregarious form of M. raptorellus. Species within the genus Muscidifurax, as well as the sex, can clearly be differentiated by examining the gas chromatograms of the CHCs. Identification of the alkanes by mass spectrometry shows uncommon dimethylalkanes and trimethylalkanes for members of the …

Black Flies, Simulium Spp. (Insecta: Diptera: Simuliidae), J. F. Butler, J. A. Hogsette Jan 1998

Black Flies, Simulium Spp. (Insecta: Diptera: Simuliidae), J. F. Butler, J. A. Hogsette

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Introduction

Florida occasionally experiences outbreaks of black flies, though this is a rare occurance, and these large populations are caused by rainfall extremes. Common names for this pest include black flies and turkey gnats, as well as a number of new names applied by Floridians which are not repeatable here. Because of the hump visible behind their head when viewed in profile, black flies are also called buffalo gnats. Like eye gnats, they fly around people's heads, occasionally getting into eyes and ears as well as crawling in the hair. Because most of the specimens collected to date have been …

The Effect Of Hippotherapy On Lower Extremity Range Of Motion In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Jim Pitman Jan 1998

The Effect Of Hippotherapy On Lower Extremity Range Of Motion In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Jim Pitman

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

It has been postulated that hippotherapy will help increase range of motion (ROM), pulmonary function, balance, and muscle tone in children with cerebral palsy and, therefore, may be used as a physical therapy modality. The purpose of this independent study is to objectively measure lower extremity range of motion in children with cerebral palsy after an eight-week hippotherapy program.

Six children diagnosed with cerebral palsy initially participated in the experiment using a repeated measure design. Only two subjects completed the study. No control group was used for this study. A consent form was signed prior to measuring LE ROM.

It …

Visual Impairment And Its Affects On Gross Motor Development: A Literature Review And Implications For Physical Therapy, Jodi A. Toenjes Jan 1998

Visual Impairment And Its Affects On Gross Motor Development: A Literature Review And Implications For Physical Therapy, Jodi A. Toenjes

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Visual impairment, or blindness, in the pediatric population has been shown to affect several key areas of gross motor development. Many of these areas can be positively influenced by physical therapy techniques. However, some physical therapy curriculums do not teach this topic of study because the prevalence of blindness is low. The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching manual that will provide the physical therapist with specific exercises, activities, and helpful hints that will facilitate the treatment of a patient with blindness in a pediatric setting.

The manual includes information regarding common mannerisms of the blind population …

Ozone Transport And The Clean Air Act: The Answers Are Blowin' In The Wind, Shari R. Desalvo Jan 1998

Ozone Transport And The Clean Air Act: The Answers Are Blowin' In The Wind, Shari R. Desalvo

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note addresses the major provisions of the Clean Air Act that deal with the transport of ozone from one state to another. After an overview of the Act and specific sections dealing with ozone transport, the Note discusses the Environmental Protection Agency's (the "EPA") inconsistent interpretation and application of the Act, as exposed through the limited case law addressing this issue to date. Next, using the illustrative cases of Pennsylvania and Ohio, the Note discusses how Northeastern states are suffering economically and physically due to Midwestern pollution. This Note concludes that it is time for the EPA to stop …

Genetic Technology And Its Impact On Culpability For Criminal Actions , Marcia Johnson Jan 1998

Genetic Technology And Its Impact On Culpability For Criminal Actions , Marcia Johnson

Cleveland State Law Review

This article addresses only one issue, one which our judicial system ultimately must address: the criminal responsibility one will bear for committing a crime when the actions are determined by the actor's genetic make-up. Part I of the article traces the roots of genetic research from Darwinism to eugenics and Nazi racial purity theories. Part II reviews theories and studies which support the concept of genetic influence on social, particularly criminal, behavior. Part III considers the impact of the genetic revolution on our criminal justice system with special emphasis on the effect on our system's fundamental concept of free will. …

Seeing Is Believing: A Practitioner's Guide To The Admissibility Of Demonstrative Computer Evidence, 1998 John M. Manos Writing Competition On Evidence , Karen D. Butera

Cleveland State Law Review

As computer equipment itself becomes more financially accessible, more experts are using computer simulations as demonstrative evidence during their trial testimony. However, this use of computer simulations presents several novel, complex issues. Part II will explore the backgrounds of demonstrative evidence, computerization, and the use of computer simulation for demonstrative evidence. Part III will discuss and analyze several relevant issues, including attorney training, expert knowledge, judicial confusion, additional evidentiary issues, and the possible prejudicial influence of demonstrative computer simulations. This discussion concludes with some general thoughts regarding the use of demonstrative computer simulation to illustrate expert testimony.

The Tax Status Of Ohio Property Used For Low-Income Housing, Christopher P. Conomy Jan 1998

The Tax Status Of Ohio Property Used For Low-Income Housing, Christopher P. Conomy

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note argues that the rule denying property tax exemption to low-income housing units is improper. The rule is improper in three significant regards. First, as a matter of social and public policy, the rule is misguided, because it hinders the fulfillment of an important need in Ohio and in American society at large. Second, as a purely legal matter, the original rule denying exemption for these properties resulted as a mistaken application of the existing law regarding the definition of "charitable" use. The third, and most compelling reason, is that the legal basis underlying the original rule has undergone …

Creating Community Through Art: Two Research Project Reviews, Seymour Simmons Iii Jan 1998

Creating Community Through Art: Two Research Project Reviews, Seymour Simmons Iii

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Against a background of contemporary social problems and concerns, this article considers the role of the arts in creating community. It begins with a synopsis of Ellen Dissanayake’s anthropological perspective on the importance of the arts in human evolution, human development, and premodern societies. It then considers current approaches to community-building through the arts based on two recent research projects done by Harvard Project Zero and its affiliates. One project, the Lincoln Center Institute Arts-in-Education Survey Study, reviewed twenty-two arts-in-education programs including community art centers, cultural centers, arts-infusion schools, and state and local arts councils. The other, Project Co-Arts, involved …

In Vivo And In Vitro Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Psychoactive Drugs In Rat Brain, Diana M. Lindquist Jan 1998

In Vivo And In Vitro Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Psychoactive Drugs In Rat Brain, Diana M. Lindquist

Theses and Dissertations

Four psychoactive drugs were studied using various in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Trifluoperazine (TFP) was given to several normal rats, whose brains were then studied using in vivo fluorine-19 NMR. Three peaks were detected in the in vivo fluorine spectra: one at -62 ppm, which was due to TFP, and two others at -55 and -75 ppm, which are due to unknown metabolites of TFP. Samples of skin, skull, muscle, and brain were obtained from these rats and extracted for in vitro analysis. The metabolites responsible for the in vivo peak at -75 ppm also appeared in the …

Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas Jan 1998

Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper considers education as the fulfilment of a person's overall potential as a human being. It thus concentrates on the multiplicity of factors which interact and interweave to produce ulfilled, caring members of our society. The whole notion of child development can only be understood within a cultural context. As Mead (1932) showed, child rearing practices differ from culture to culture and the role of adults in that culture has a strong influence on the type of activity in which their young offspring engage. For example, playing at mothers and fathers will obviously eflect the different functions that adults …

The Myth Of Everglades Settlement, Alfred R. Light Jan 1998

The Myth Of Everglades Settlement, Alfred R. Light

St. Thomas Law Review

To "settle" has a number of senses within the English language. For example, it can mean "to make a decision on; determine; decide," or "to come to a conclusion," as when children bring their disputes to their mother to settle.' It can mean "to agree upon (as a time, place, or plan); fix beforehand," as in to settle on a course of action. It can mean "to put in order; arrange," as in one must settle all his affairs before going away for the winter. It can mean "to pay; arrange payment of," as in one must also settle up …

Pre-Education Programs: A Comprehensive Project At Henry Ford Community College, D. Zopf, L. Smyrski Jan 1998

Pre-Education Programs: A Comprehensive Project At Henry Ford Community College, D. Zopf, L. Smyrski

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) in Dearbom, Michigan is a two-year institution of higher education serving a diverse student population of approximately 13,000 students. In addition to providing a broad array of technical and vocational programs, the College provides the first two years of a baccalaureate program. However, the transferability of these programs is not assured. In the absence of a mandated state-wide curriculum, two- and four-year colleges and universities in Michigan develop courses and programs independently, and the transfer of courses between institutions is determined independently by the respective departments. The end result is often loss of credit when …

Afrocentric Ideologies And Gendered Resistance In Daughters Of The Dust And Malcolm X: Setting, Scene, And Spectatorship, David Jones Jan 1998

Afrocentric Ideologies And Gendered Resistance In Daughters Of The Dust And Malcolm X: Setting, Scene, And Spectatorship, David Jones

Ethnic Studies Review

This study of scenes from the films Daughters of the Dust and Malcolm X, describes images of myth, gender, and resistance familiar to African-American interpretive communities. Key thematic and technical elements of these films are opposed to familiar Hollywood practices, indicating the directors' effort to address resisting spectators. Both filmmakers, Julie Dash and Spike Lee respectively, chose subjects with an ideological resonance in African-American collective memory: Malcolm X, eulogized by Ossie Davis as "our living black manhood"(i) and the women of the Gullah Sea Islands, a site often celebrated for its authentically African cultural survivals. Both films combine images of …

Sports And The Politics Of Identity And Memory: The Case Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools During The 1930s, John Bloom Jan 1998

Sports And The Politics Of Identity And Memory: The Case Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools During The 1930s, John Bloom

Ethnic Studies Review

The federal government of the United States developed a complex System of boarding schools for Native Americans in the 19(th) century. This effort was generally insensitive and often brutal. In spite of such brutality many students managed to negotiate and create new understandings of traditions and cultural autonomy while in such schools. Now, however, some former students remember their lives as students with mixed emotions. Drawing on oral history interviews and public official documents, the author examines the recreational and athletic life at the boarding schools and finds that students were, nevertheless, able to experience pleasure and pride in creating …

Junk Science - The Lawyer's Ethical Responsibilities, Dick Thornburgh Jan 1998

Junk Science - The Lawyer's Ethical Responsibilities, Dick Thornburgh

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article argues that many judges lack the capacity to distinguish between experts witnesses who make use of rigorous scientific research and those who rely on "junk science" - conclusions based on insufficient research. It notes that judicial standards for admissibility of expert testimony are not sufficient to prevent the introduction of junk science in to the courtroom. It concludes with a suggestion for a more rigorous process for vetting scientific evidence that is admitted in court.

Questioning The Admissibility Of Nonscientific Testimony After Daubert: The Need For Increased Judicial Gatekeeping To Ensure The Reliability Of All Expert Testimony, Kristina L. Needham Jan 1998

Questioning The Admissibility Of Nonscientific Testimony After Daubert: The Need For Increased Judicial Gatekeeping To Ensure The Reliability Of All Expert Testimony, Kristina L. Needham

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article examines the difficulty of finding a proper standard for evaluating non-scientific expert testimony. It analyzes the legal standard for the admission of expert testimony as set out in the Federal Rule of Evidence and the Daubert case. It reviews a split in courts as to how to apply these standards to non-scientific expert testimony. It ends with some proposals for the application of Daubert to non-scientific expert testimony and suggests an amendment to the Federal Rules of evidence.
