Seed Vigor Of Four Isoline Pairs Of Sweet Corn With Two Endosperm Types At Four Temperatures, Ronglin Wang Jan 1998

Seed Vigor Of Four Isoline Pairs Of Sweet Corn With Two Endosperm Types At Four Temperatures, Ronglin Wang

Masters Theses

Sweet corn (Zea mays L. var rugosa ) is the fourth most important fresh vegetable in the U.S.. Supersweet corn with shrunken-2 endosperm is more popular with consumers than traditional sweet corn with sugary endosperm because sh2 kernels have more sugars and retain this sweet flavor longer than su kernels. However, its acceptance by growers is hindered because of its inferior seed quality and poor seedling vigor, especially when temperature is low.

Seed vigor of four isoline pairs ( C68, Oh43, Il442a and Ia453 ) with two endosperm types ( sh2 and su ) was studied in this investigation. In …

The Role Of Bowfin, Amia Calva, In Multiple Species Management Plans, Benjamin Jacob Hausmann Jan 1998

The Role Of Bowfin, Amia Calva, In Multiple Species Management Plans, Benjamin Jacob Hausmann

Masters Theses

The major challenge to fisheries managers of the 21st century will be to maintain the diversity, not only of fishing opportunity, but also of traditionally non-game and economically unimportant species. With the relatively recent understanding of the importance of ecosystem level management, attention is being focused on native species that were often ignored or eradicated under past management practices. One such fish that has been largely ignored is the bowfin, Amia calva. Ecological data pertaining to bowfin natural history are limited and to date no attempt has been made to integrate bowfin into fisheries management decisions within the species native …

2. To what extent is the Internet being included in the secondary business …

The Other And Narrative Framing In Nabokov's The Real Life Of Sebastian Knight, Lolita, And Pnin, Stacey Vivian Overend Jan 1998

The Other And Narrative Framing In Nabokov's The Real Life Of Sebastian Knight, Lolita, And Pnin, Stacey Vivian Overend

Masters Theses

Vladimir Nabokov is often noted for his portrayal of controversial characters, isolated from the real world. These characters, known as Others, are shunned by society because of their socially unacceptable or inappropriate behavior. However, in order to understand fully the Other and his motives, readers must evaluate the Other's behavior within the context of his alternate existence, an isolated existence created in response to the threat common society imposes on his Self. Focusing on three of Nabokov's novels, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, Lolita, and Pnin, this thesis examines the character of the Other through two …

Masters Theses

This thesis consists of a Polish translation of a volume of Robert Penn Warren's poetry: Audubon: A Vision accompanied by an introductory essay focusing on historical, cultural and psychological aspects of the poems. As a novelist, Robert Penn Warren is well known to the Polish reading public. "She Protects Her Girls": The Legend Of Mary Hawkins At Pemberton Hall, Margaret Allen-Kline Jan 1998

"She Protects Her Girls": The Legend Of Mary Hawkins At Pemberton Hall, Margaret Allen-Kline

Masters Theses

The tradition of the legend of Mary Hawkins provides an example of how urban legends develop and circulate in a community. The legend is a part of a larger tradition of story telling and of urban legends such as "The Roommate's Death" which follow the same format. The legend is believed to be true, and many believe an actual event is the basis for the story. It is perpetuated by word of mouth, and like a ripple in a still body of water, it reaches beyond the campus and into the mainstream of the local community by means of the …

A Raster-Based Gis Analysis Of The Cumulative Impacts Of Humans And Beaver On Wetland Area And Types In The Chickahominy River Watershed (Virginia, Usa) From 1953 To 1994, Alexandra Dunya Syphard Jan 1998

A Raster-Based Gis Analysis Of The Cumulative Impacts Of Humans And Beaver On Wetland Area And Types In The Chickahominy River Watershed (Virginia, Usa) From 1953 To 1994, Alexandra Dunya Syphard

Theses and Dissertations

Despite increased recognition of wetland functions and values, wetland loss and degradation continues in the United States. Digital wetlands and uplands coverages were analyzed to compare the cumulative impacts of humans and beaver (Castor canadensis) on wetland types in the Chickahominy River watershed (Virginia, USA) from 1953 to 1994. A vector-based approach was used for data manipulation, and a raster-based approach was chosen to analyze geographic change over time. Study findings indicated that anthropogenic activities were responsible for both wetland loss and gain in the watershed, and beavers substantially influenced shifting between wetland types. Wetland area increased 4% over 41 …

Playing Beyond The Rules: A Realist And Rhetoric-Based Approach To Researching The Law And Solving Legal Problems, Thomas Michael Mcdonnell

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The proposed realist and rhetorical approach to legal research applies to every conceivable legal problem and provides the student a conceptual foundation not only for solving any legal dispute, but for successfully completing any transactions with which he or she will be confronted. Part I of this article will demonstrate why law students should learn to research the relevant audiences in the legal drama and to research the unpublished and often unwritten rules and practices that these audiences follow. Part II will show how. Part III will present a comprehensive legal problem solving model that integrates these new dimensions of …

The Concept Of Compliance As A Function Of Competing Conceptions Of International Law, Benedict Kingsbury Jan 1998

The Concept Of Compliance As A Function Of Competing Conceptions Of International Law, Benedict Kingsbury

Michigan Journal of International Law

The purpose of this article is to challenge the tendency in the existing literature to view "compliance" simply as "correspondence of behavior with legal rules." This tendency is intelligibly based in a theoretical view that law can properly be defined and understood as a body of rules and expresses a practical concern to get on with the important task of producing empirical studies of compliance. The logical corollary is that a reasonable degree of conformity between these rules and actual behavior is necessary to an efficacious legal system, so that recurrent and widespread non-conformity with rules would usually call into …

Computer-Generated Child Pornography: A Legal Alternative?, Wendy L. Pursel Jan 1998

Computer-Generated Child Pornography: A Legal Alternative?, Wendy L. Pursel

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment does not debate the efficacy of the Child Pornography Prevention Act in accomplishing its purpose-the effective regulation of computer-generated images. Nor does this Comment address adult-simulated child pornography. Rather, working under the assumption that the statute accomplishes what it aims to accomplish-namely the regulation of computer-generated child pornography-this Comment looks beyond the statute and its language to the broader discussion of the value in regulating this type of material. Specifically, this Comment will focus on two issues: first, whether legislation regulating computer-generated child pornography can survive First Amendment considerations of free speech, and second, the social arguments made …

Spiritual Equality, The Black Codes, And The Americanization Of The Freedmen, David F. Forte Jan 1998

Spiritual Equality, The Black Codes, And The Americanization Of The Freedmen, David F. Forte

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The notion of spiritual equality grew from the abolitionist movement - the precursor for the political ideology of the radical Republicans. The radical Republicans did not think one could achieve the acceptance of spiritual equality through forced material equality. [I]t was a religious revival that brought our country to confront the reality of slavery. It was a theological doctrine from which we derived our notion of equality in the Reconstruction Amendments. And in that era, the free-thinkers - the secularists of the age - were temporizers on the issue. They were simply of no use in the raising to liberty …

The Politics Of Art Education In The Public Schools, Wendy Campbell Jan 1998

The Politics Of Art Education In The Public Schools, Wendy Campbell

Educational Studies Dissertations

In this study, I examine why the subject of art has been marginalized in the public schools and why art continues to be vulnerable to budget cuts and reductions in staff despite the fact that national art education standards are now in place. I also suggest a way to remedy the situation. My analysis concerning why art has been marginalized comes from an integration of insights from three discourses: feminism, postmodernism, and the perspective implied by the literature and practices of the twelve step recovery community. Writers in all three discourses suggest that the world view of the dominant culture …

Effect Of Transatlantic Transport On Reproduction Of Agouti And Nonagouti Deer Mice, Peromyscus Maniculatus, Virginia Hayssen Jan 1998

Effect Of Transatlantic Transport On Reproduction Of Agouti And Nonagouti Deer Mice, Peromyscus Maniculatus, Virginia Hayssen

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In conjunction with establishing colonies of deer mice in the UK, effects of transportation on reproduction in agouti (A) and nonagouti (a) deer mice were assessed. Adults were shipped via ground courier and air freight from Northampton, Massachusetts, USA to Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire, England in February and June. Deer mice were paired upon arrival in Sutton Bonington, whereas matched controls were paired in the original colonies at shipping. To assess reproduction, the following variables were monitored for 110 days for all 96 pairs: number of pairs producing litters, time from pairing to birth, interlitter interval, litter size at birth, and …
