Isolation, Culture And Characterization Of A Primary Fibroblast Cell Line From Channel Catfish, Quiyang Zhang, Richard K. Cooper, William R. Wolters, Terrence R. Tiersch Jan 1998

Isolation, Culture And Characterization Of A Primary Fibroblast Cell Line From Channel Catfish, Quiyang Zhang, Richard K. Cooper, William R. Wolters, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

A primary cell line (designated as CCf) derived from caudal fin tissue of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, was developed using explant techniques. The cell line grew fastest in media supplied with FBS and channel catfish serum. The duplication time of the cell line under optimal conditions was ~56 h at a plating density of 1.1 x 105 cells/ml. The cell line has been propagated continuously for 25 passages (1:4 dilution per passage), cryopreserved, and recovered successfully at different passages. The cultured cells had fibroblastic morphology, and synthesized fibronectin and Type I and III collagens in the cytoplasm. The cell line …

Performance And Metabolic Responses Of Young Dairy Calves Fed Diets Supplemented With Chromium Tripicolinate, C. L. Depew, L. D. Bunting, J. M. Fernandez, D. L. Thompson, R. W. Adkinson Jan 1998

Performance And Metabolic Responses Of Young Dairy Calves Fed Diets Supplemented With Chromium Tripicolinate, C. L. Depew, L. D. Bunting, J. M. Fernandez, D. L. Thompson, R. W. Adkinson

Faculty Publications

Forty-two Holstein calves were used to study performance and metabolic responses when milk replacer and then postweaning starter were supplemented with 1 ppm of Cr as Cr-tripicolinate. From birth through 8 wk of age, supplemental Cr tended to improve the growth performance of bull calves but not of heifer calves. Starter intake and feed efficiency were not affected by supplemental Cr. From 1 to 5 wk of age, plasma cortisol concentrations sampled just prior to feeding decreased, and concentrations of insulinlike growth factor-I increased. All calves appeared to become less sensitive to insulin as they aged. From 1 to 5 …

Egg Parasitoids Of Homalodisca Coagulata (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), Serguei V. Triapitsyn, Russell F. Mizell, Janice L. Bossart, Christopher E. Carlton

Faculty Publications

A survey of egg parasitoids of the leafhopper Homalodisca coagulata was conducted in California, Florida and Louisiana. The mymarid wasp Gonatocerus ashmeadi was found to be the most common natural enemy in all locations sampled; G. fasciatus and the trichogrammatid Zagella sp. are recognized as potential biological control agents for introduction into southern California.

Identification And Characterization Of A 14-Kilodalton Brucella Abortus Protein Reactive With Antibodies From Naturally And Experimentally Infected Hosts And T Lymphocytes From Experimentally Infected Balb/C Mice, R. Identification And Characterization Of A 14-Kilodalton Brucella Abortus Protein Reactive With Antibodies From Naturally And Experimentally Infected Hosts And T Lymphocytes From Experimentally Infected Balb/C Mice, R. L. Chirhart-Gilleland, M. E. Kovach, P. H. Elzer, S. R. Jennings, R. M. Roop

Faculty Publications

A low-molecular-weight recombinant Brucella abortus protein reactive with antibodies from a variety of naturally and experimentally infected hosts and T lymphocytes from experimentally infected mice was identified and given the designation BA14K. The gene encoding BA14K was cloned and characterized, and the predicted amino acid sequence of this immunoreactive protein showed no significant homology with previously described proteins. Sequences homologous to the cloned fragment encoding BA14K were identified by Southern blot analysis of genomic DNAs from representatives of all of the currently recognized Brucella species. Studies employing BA14K should contribute to our efforts to better understand the antigenic specificity of …

Striking The Rock: Confronting Gender Equality In South Africa, Penelope E. Andrews

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article analyzes the status of women's rights in the newly democratic South Africa. It examines rights guaranteed in the Constitution and conflicts between the principle of gender equality and the recognition of indigenous law and institutions. The Article focuses on the South African transition to democracy and the influence that feminist agitation at the international level has had on South African women's attempts at political organization. Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau Jan 1998

Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau

Honors Theses

Chemists have been captivated by the ability of most natural products to exhibit biological activity which in effect has made them very attractive to pharmaceutical companies. Many over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin were first extracted from natural products and are now an integral part of most of our lives. More importantly, certain drugs such as taxol, which is used to treat breast cancer, initially came from the bark of a yew tree. Extracting these substances from their natural source and using them medicinally at the demand of the consumers would result in the destruction of the natural habitat. Oftentimes, the …

On The Idea Of Reflexive Rhetoric In Homer, Mari Lee Mifsud Jr. Jan 1998

On The Idea Of Reflexive Rhetoric In Homer, Mari Lee Mifsud Jr.

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

When Henry Johnstone and I translated this passage, we wondered to what extent we could say that Odysseus persuades himself to endure. Is Odysseus involved in self-persuasion, what Johnstone has termed reflexive rhetoric, when he deliberates? Answering this question led us to explore related questions such as, does Odysseus have a "self" to which his deliberation/persuasion can be addressed? If so, how do we know that Odysseus actually persuades himself when he deliberates? If Odysseus does persuade himself, can we say he practices rhetoric on himself? Can we even talk of rhetoric in Homer? Through this essay, I wish …

Frankfurter Type Sausage Production With Sunflower Oil Substitution, A. Hamdi Ertaş, Gülay Karabaş Jan 1998

Frankfurter Type Sausage Production With Sunflower Oil Substitution, A. Hamdi Ertaş, Gülay Karabaş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Some quality characteristics of frankfurter type sausages (with 30% total fat) produced by adding sunflower oil at different levels (10%, 20% and 30%) were determined and compared to control with 30% animal fat. Increasing of sunflower oil content resulted in lower process yield. Cholesterol content and water holding capacity of frankfurters also decreased at the levels of sunflower oil from 10 to 30% (P
