The African Roots Of Contemporary Music And Dance In Cuba, Pamela D. Kadner
The African Roots Of Contemporary Music And Dance In Cuba, Pamela D. Kadner
Honors Capstones
This paper will provide the reader with an overview of popular Cuban music and dance forms as well as an understanding of how the island’s history of cultural diversity has empowered its music to become an influential component to all of Latin music. In particular, African cultural elements that have effected Cuba’s popular culture as well as its national identity will be discussed. Beginning with African tribal influences as well as other cultural elements, known prior to the abolition of slavery, the paper will move into the post-slavery evolution of Cuba’s popular culture. From there, several of Cuba’s popular music …
The Justice Who Wouldn't Be Lutheran: Toward Borrowing The Wisdom Of Faith Traditions, Marie Failinger
The Justice Who Wouldn't Be Lutheran: Toward Borrowing The Wisdom Of Faith Traditions, Marie Failinger
Faculty Scholarship
Although many authors have debated the propriety of the use of religious arguments in public policy discussions and lawmaking, few have critically reviewed the jurisprudence of particular judges through the lens of their own faith-traditions. Preliminarily, this article attempts a modest contribution to the discussion about the use of religious argument in public discussions by suggesting that judicial opinions should be viewed rhetorically and that religious assumptions and claims may legitimately be "borrowed" analogically into such opinions, at least their forensic and epideictic elements. More concretely, it analyzes themes in some of Justice William Rehnquist's opinions to determine how consistent …

Phorbol Ester Activation Of An Nhe-Like Electroneutral Na+ /H+ Antiporter In Isolated E-Cells Of Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreas, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn
Phorbol Ester Activation Of An Nhe-Like Electroneutral Na+ /H+ Antiporter In Isolated E-Cells Of Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreas, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
The basolateral membrane of Atlantic lobster (Homarus americanus) epithelium possesses an electroneutral Na+ /H+ antiporter that functionally resembles members of the vertebrate NHE family. Regulatory mechanisms of this antiporter in purified hepatopancreatic E-cell suspensions, produced with a centrifugal elutriation technique, were investigated. Suspensions routinely consisted of greater than 95% E-cells displaying greater than 90% viability. Intracellular pH (pHi) was monitored by loading cells with the fluorescent dye 2´,7´-bis(carboxyethyl)-5,6- carboxyfluorescein (BCECF), and placing suspensions in a spectrofluorometer. Recovery from induced acid-loading was mediated by a Na+ -dependent, dimethylamiloride-sensitive proton efflux. Antiport activation was a sigmoidal function of pHi at values below …

Enhanced cutaneous wound healing by positively charged cross-linked diethylaminoethyl dextran beads (CLOD) was studied in a standardized incisional wound model in 20 adult and 20 geriatric 111acaca mulatta (rhesus) partitioned equally over five time periods. Physiologic saline served as a control. Soft-tissue linear incisions were prepared between and l cm inferior to the scapulae. There were four incisions per rhesus; each incision was 1.5 cm long with 1 cm of undisturbed tissue between incisions, and both the experimental CLDD and physiologic saline treatments were administered to each rhesus. The incision treatments were either CLDD and soft-tissue closure with 4-0 BioSyn …
Aids As A Chronic Illness: A Cautionary Tale For The End Of The Twentieth Century, Linda C. Fentiman
Aids As A Chronic Illness: A Cautionary Tale For The End Of The Twentieth Century, Linda C. Fentiman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The result of the monumental shifts in the structure and financing of health care delivery is that at the very time that medical innovations have made possible significant improvements in the quality and quantity of life for people with chronic illnesses, those who are responsible for paying for Americans' health care, in government and the private sector, seem to have finally said “Enough! We must cut costs, and cut them dramatically, and the simplest, most direct way of cutting costs is to deny coverage for certain kinds of treatments and certain kinds of illnesses.” People with HIV and AIDS are …
The 'Ascent Of Man': Legal Systems And The Discovery Of An Environmental Ethic, Nicholas A. Robinson
The 'Ascent Of Man': Legal Systems And The Discovery Of An Environmental Ethic, Nicholas A. Robinson
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
A decade ago, firefighters in a warehouse on the Rhine in Switzerland washed chemicals, solvents, and mercury into the river, destroying all life in the river for miles, killing millions of fish, and endangering the water supplies of cities in Germany and the Netherlands. This tragedy galvanized the river valley states into action. They vowed to clean up the river, not just from that incident but from the effects of having used the river as a sewer for two centuries. But how clean is clean? The goal for this calculated plan, which will take decades to achieve, is symbolized by …

Reducing Nitrogen Pollution On Long Island Sound: Is There A Place For Pollutant Trading?, Ann Powers
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to examine the legal adequacy of proposals now under consideration for a nitrogen trading program on Long Island Sound, and to assess the likelihood of success in light of the experience with other trading programs, both for water and air pollution. Part I outlines the current environmental condition of Long Island Sound and explains the factors which have led proponents of trading to believe such a program could be effective. In Part II we consider the essential elements of a trading program, and the lessons to be learned from the Clean Air Act programs. …

The Effect Of Sinoaortic Deafferentation On Renal Wrap Hypertension, J. Mark Van Ness, Teresa Craig, Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Joseph R. Haywood
The Effect Of Sinoaortic Deafferentation On Renal Wrap Hypertension, J. Mark Van Ness, Teresa Craig, Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Joseph R. Haywood
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
The purpose of this study was to determine whether sinoaortic deafferentation (SAD) alters the severity of hypertension or sympathoadrenal contribution to mean blood pressure (MAP) during renal wrap hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for 24-hour recording of MAP and heart rate. All rats underwent either SAD or sham SAD (Intact) surgery and were allowed to recover for 10 to 14 days. The rats were then assigned to a normotensive (Sham) group or a hypertensive (Wrap) group in which 1-kidney figure-8 renal wrap was performed. SAD increased the acute MAP response to renal wrap (Intact-Sham=5+/-1 mm Hg, …
The Legal Architecture Of Virtual Stores, Walter Effross
The Legal Architecture Of Virtual Stores, Walter Effross
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
INTRODUCTION: A major "selling point" of the World Wide Web is its ability to offer a "virtual storefront" to anyone, from an individual to a multinational corporation, with a product to market. Commercially available software packages enable even those computer users who are not versed in the intricacies of programming to create customized Web sites quickly, and at a relatively low cost. The swift development of this technology and a cultural shift towards encouraging on-line commerce have led to dramatic growth in the demographics and dollar amounts of the on-line marketplace, which in turn offers a challenging new context for …
Checkpoints On The Conversion Highway: Some Trouble Spots In The Conversion Of Nonprofit Health Care Organizations To For-Profit Status, James J. Fishman
Checkpoints On The Conversion Highway: Some Trouble Spots In The Conversion Of Nonprofit Health Care Organizations To For-Profit Status, James J. Fishman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This essay does not address the truly important policy issues: whether for-profit healthcare should be allowed or encouraged; how the quality of care compares to nonprofits or what criteria should be used to evaluate the quality of care; or what the impact of these conversions is on the communities they serve. It discusses less significant issues: those of process—how can we shape and control this tidal wave of change so that the public will be served and charitable assets preserved to the maximum extent possible? The focus is upon the valuation of these charitable assets; the appropriate process of conversion; …
