The Effects Of Intestinal Microbes On Nestling Tree Swallow (Tachycineta Bicolor) Growth And Development, Natasha Brock Jan 1998

The Effects Of Intestinal Microbes On Nestling Tree Swallow (Tachycineta Bicolor) Growth And Development, Natasha Brock

McNair Scholars Journal

Subclinical doses of broad-spectrum antibiotics (BactrimTM and ClavamoxTM) were given to half of the nestlings in tree swallow broods as the other half received a placebo. There were no differences in the microbial communities between the treated and untreated birds onND5or on ND19. Physical measures on ND19 showed that treated nestlings had significantly smaller tarsi and larger mass.

Composition Studies As A Creative Art: Teaching, Writing, Scholarship, Administration, Lynn Z. Bloom Jan 1998

Composition Studies As A Creative Art: Teaching, Writing, Scholarship, Administration, Lynn Z. Bloom

All USU Press Publications

This work focuses on the creative dynamics that arise from the interrelation of writing, teaching writing, and ways of reading—and the scholarship and administrative issues engendered by it. To regard composition studies as a creative art is to engage in a process of intellectual or aesthetic free play, and then to translate the results of this play into serious work that yet retains the freedom and playfulness of its origins. The book is fueled by a mixture of faith in the fields that compose composition studies, hope that efforts of composition teachers can make a difference, and a sense of …

Monte Carlo Simulation In Environmental Risk Assessment--Science, Policy And Legal Issues, Susan R. Poulter

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Poulter notes that agencies should anticipate judicial requirements for justification of Monte Carlo simulations and, meanwhile, should consider, e.g., whether their use will make risk assessment policy choices more opaque or apparent.

The Roles Of Video In The Design, Development, And Use Of Interactive Electronic Conference Proceedings, Samuel A. Rebelsky, Fillia Makedon, P. Takis Metaxas, James Ford, Charles Owen, Peter A. Gloor

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we discuss the design and development of a particular type of electronic publication that has gained recent popularity: electronic conference proceedings. We suggest that modern electronic proceedings should provide a high degree of interactivity. To support such interactivity, proceedings should include an extensive collection of features and diverse multimedia components. Features appropriate for electronic proceedings include annotation, presentation, and retrieval mechanisms. Conference papers and multimedia reproductions of conference presentations with features that allow readers to manipulate these reproductions particularly enhance the interactivity of electronic proceedings. Experience from interactive proceedings the authors have designed is also discussed. Special …

Model-Based Approach To Envelope And Positive Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Of Signals With Speech Applications, Ramdas Kumaresan, Ashwin Rao Jan 1998

Model-Based Approach To Envelope And Positive Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Of Signals With Speech Applications, Ramdas Kumaresan, Ashwin Rao

Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Engineering)

An analytic signal s(t) is modeled over a T second duration by a pole-zero model by considering its periodic extensions. This type of representation is analogous to that used in discrete-time systems theory, where the periodic frequency response of a system is characterized by a finite number of poles and zeros in the z-plane. Except, in this case, the poles and zeros are located in the complex-time plane. Using this signal model, expressions are derived for the envelope, phase, and the instantaneous frequency of the signal s(t). In the special case of an analytic signal having poles and zeros …

Production Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch Jan 1998

Production Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on production practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few empirical data are available on production practices of cow/calf and stocker operations in Arkansas. This report shows that there are some differences in production methods across operation types. Further, the report summarizes demographic characteristics of Arkansas cow/calf and stocker operations. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing the needed data for studying the potential economic impact of feeding weaned calves to heavier weights in …

Marketing Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch Jan 1998

Marketing Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on marketing practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few data are available on what marketing techniques and decision criteria cow-calf and stocker operations use to market their cattle. This report shows that there are some differences in opinions on marketing issues such as pooled cattle sales and retained ownership across cow-calf and stocker operations. Further, these operations use different sources of information to make marketing decisions. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing …
