A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall Jan 1998

A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Local media should carefully consider whether or not their health information coverage provides current and useful information to people living within their viewing area. Media play an important role in providing Americans with pertinent health information. As Greenberg and Wartenber (1990) suggest, “American people receive two-thirds more cancer prevention information from television than from their physicians.” Therefore, local television media should make a conscious effort to educate themselves about which health diseases and problems most affect people within their viewing area. For example, people living in Appalachia experience health conditions that are not consistent with those experienced in every region …

From The Southeast To Fort Ancient: A Survey Of Shell Gorgets In West Virginia, Darla Spencer Hoffman Jan 1998

From The Southeast To Fort Ancient: A Survey Of Shell Gorgets In West Virginia, Darla Spencer Hoffman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

One of the most unique and artistic artifacts found throughout the eastern United States is the engraved shell gorget. During late prehistoric and protohistoric times many of these gorgets were transported from the Southeast, where they were associated with the Mississippian Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, into Fort Ancient territory.

Engraved shell gorgets can be traced to their region of origin, indicating prehistoric trade networks that were in place throughout the eastern United States. In addition, the gorgets can serve as temporal markers to order late prehistoric and protohistoric Fort Ancient sites in time.

Shell gorgets are found mainly in a burial …

Ecology And Natural History Of The Cow Knob Salamander, Plethodon Punctatus Highton, In West Virginia, Robert B. Tucker Jan 1998

Ecology And Natural History Of The Cow Knob Salamander, Plethodon Punctatus Highton, In West Virginia, Robert B. Tucker

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Very little has been written on the ecology and natural history of the Cow Knob salamander, Plethodon punctatus Highton, since it was described by Highton (1971). Plethodon punctatus is known only from the higher elevations of Great North (above 2,800 ft) and Shenandoah (above 3,000 ft.) Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia (Highton, 1972; Conant and Collins, 1991). The type locality is Cow Knob, Pendleton County, West Virginia. Plethodon punctatus is a large (up to 75 mm snout-to-vent length) dorso-ventrally flattened salamander with creamish iridiophore spots on the back and sides, webbed feet for a fossorial lifestyle, and large …

Conduct Disorder Questionnaire, Dwayne L. Milam Jan 1998

Conduct Disorder Questionnaire, Dwayne L. Milam

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Conduct disorder is characterized by a pattern of rule violation in which the rights of those associated with the individual and society are violated. Frequently there are many problems at home, school, and within the community. Without early diagnosis and treatment these problems escalate. Many different techniques and assessment tools have been used to identify these individuals. Most rely on collateral informants, such as parents and teachers. Others are time consuming or not developed to specifically identify conduct disorder. The Conduct Disorder Questionnaire was developed by the author to address these issues. The questionnaire is a brief, easily scored self-report …

Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe Jan 1998

Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Scholars have generally ignored Irish novelist and playwright Roddy Doyle. Little attention has been paid to his narrative techniques or to his development as a novelist. In the American academy, thus far, only one dissertation concerning Doyle’s novels has appeared, written in 1996, by Caramine White, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. White notes that her dissertation is the first on Doyle and “its basic purpose will be to introduce the novels to the reading public and to convince the reading public that Doyle, although a very popular artist, is also a gifted writer who should be taken …

Basses were collected by three methods: 1) local anglers (hook and line), 2) gill netting surveys; and 3) …

Progestin Stimulation Of The Protooncogene C-̲M̲Y̲C In T47d Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kristy Ann Blankenship Jan 1998

Progestin Stimulation Of The Protooncogene C-̲M̲Y̲C In T47d Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kristy Ann Blankenship

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Moore and co-workers have previously demonstrated that progestins stimulate the growth of T47D human breast cancer cells. We now investigate the possibility that progestins might transactivate the protooncogcne c-myc as part of the mechanism for growth stimulation. Treatment of T47D cells with the synthetic progestin R5020 results in a rapid, dose-dependent increase in c-myc mRNA. This stimulation is evident as early as 5 minutes, increases up to 4-fold at 1 hour, and then returns toward basal levels. The optimal concentration of R5020 for induction of c-myc gene expression is 10 nM, which is within the physiologically relevant range of hormone …

The Mechanics And Regulation Of Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Contraction: Implications Of Cytoskeletal Remodeling, Protein Phosphorylations, And Microtubule-Based Kinase Transport, Alison Summers Battistella-Patterson Jan 1998

The Mechanics And Regulation Of Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Contraction: Implications Of Cytoskeletal Remodeling, Protein Phosphorylations, And Microtubule-Based Kinase Transport, Alison Summers Battistella-Patterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The exact nature of the mechanisms and the regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction is not well understood. To better understand these processes, we examined two systems involved in smooth muscle contraction, the cytoskeleton and the protein kinases. In order to study the role of the cytoskeleton in smooth muscle contraction, we examined the contractile and mechanical effects of cytoskeleton disruption. We found that the relationship between passive tension applied to aortic rings and the resulting increase in tissue length was nearly linear over the range of 1 g to 15 g. However, even with increasing tissue length, within the …

The Role Of Domain I In Laminin Chain Assembly, George D. Kamphaus Jan 1998

The Role Of Domain I In Laminin Chain Assembly, George D. Kamphaus

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Laminin, a major component of basement membrane, is a trimeric glycoprotein comprised of three chains - α, β and γ (Burgeson et al., 1994). An order for trimer assembly has been deduced: first, the β and γ chains bind to form a dimer and subsequently α is added to complete the trimer (I. Hunter et al., 1990 & 1992; Utani et al., 1994 & 1995). The C-terminal portions, found within the protein structural domain I of the p and y chains, are implicated in dimer and trimer formation by biochemical studies performed extracellularly (Utani, et al., 1994 & 1995; Nomizu …

The Brief Life Of The Anthropoid Animal: A Collection Of Translated Poems From Brief Life And The Anthropoid Animal, Marina Primo Busatto Jan 1998

The Brief Life Of The Anthropoid Animal: A Collection Of Translated Poems From Brief Life And The Anthropoid Animal, Marina Primo Busatto

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

When Luiz Busatto finished writing his first book of poems, The anthropoid animal, he was forty-two years old. Not coincidentally, the book consists of forty-two poems divided into three thematic parts: The anthropoid animal (like the title of the book), The doors of the heart, and The invincible frontiers. The main theme of the poems in The anthropoid animal is the suffering and anguish of a man who feels trapped by iron bars (“The iron bars”), who cannot be romantic anymore (“Ideological position”), who feels humiliated and lonely in his comer (“Futile gesture”), and who has decided to …

Leisure And Delinquency: A Comparative Study Of The Link Between Leisure Activities And Delinquency, Patricia L. Brougham Jan 1998

Leisure And Delinquency: A Comparative Study Of The Link Between Leisure Activities And Delinquency, Patricia L. Brougham

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

For decades policymakers, among others, have assumed that involving juveniles in leisure/recreation somehow prevents them from engaging in misbehavior and/or leisure/recreation has rehabilitative value for delinquents. The belief seems to be that involvement in leisure/recreation changes juveniles so they will be less likely to engage in delinquent behavior in the future. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between delinquency and leisure/recreation by comparing samples of high school students with juveniles who were on probation for delinquent behavior.

There were three statistical comparisons made. First, statistical analyses were used to determine whether there were gender differences. …

Molecular Mapping Of The Fatty (F) (Formerly Corpulent) Gene In The La/N Rat Obesity Model, Kenneth G. Butz Jan 1998

Molecular Mapping Of The Fatty (F) (Formerly Corpulent) Gene In The La/N Rat Obesity Model, Kenneth G. Butz

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The LA/N-corpulent (cp) rat obesity model was a congenic rat strain developed at the National Institutes of Health by C. T. Hansen . The LA/N-cp rat originated from breeding the Koletsky rat, possessing the corpulent gene, with the normotensive LA/N inbred rat. The autosomal recessive single gene mutation, cp, produces obesity with hyperphagia, hyperinsulinemia and elevated activities of liver and skeletal muscle lipogenic enzymes in the LA/N-cp rat model. The Zucker-fatty mutation, which was mapped to rat chromosome , resulted in a comparable, but not identical obesity syndrome. Breeding experiments by Yen et al …

Visual Interactive Modeling In A Java-Based Hierarchical Modeling And Simulation System, Robert G. Sargent, Thorsten Daum

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

The desired set of properties of a modern simulation system is presented. The portion of the Hierarchical Modeling And Simulation System-Java (HiMASS-j) used for specifying Hierarchical Control Flow Graph (HCFG) Models is described. The specification of HCFG Models in HiMASS-j is by visual interactive modeling through the use of graphical user interfaces and dialog boxes. HCFG Models are specified using two complementary hierarchical specification structures: one to specify the components that comprise a model and how these components are interconnected, and the other to specify the behaviors of individual atomic components. A simulation of a traffic intersection using HiMASS-j is …

Arginine To Glutamine Substitutions In The Fourth Module Of Xenopus Interphotoreceptor Retinoid-Binding Protein, Mark S. Braiman, Claxton A. Baer, Ellen E. Van Niel, Jeffrey W. Cronk, Michael T. Kinter, Nicholas E. Sherman, Federico Gonzalez-Fernandez

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP) is unusual for a lipid-binding protein in that its gene is expressed uniquely by cells of photoreceptor origin and consists of four homologous repeats, each coding for a module of~300 amino acid residues. All-trans retinol binding domains, which appear to be present in each module, are composed of conserved hydrophobic regions [Baer et al, Exp Eye Res 1998; 66:249-262]. Here we investigate the role of highly conserved arginines contained in these regions.

Armut : Der Mensch Lebt Nicht Vom Brot Allein : Wege Zur Soziokulturellen Existenzsicherung, Isidor Wallimann, Susanne Schmid Jan 1998

Armut : Der Mensch Lebt Nicht Vom Brot Allein : Wege Zur Soziokulturellen Existenzsicherung, Isidor Wallimann, Susanne Schmid

Books

While the usual discussion about the poverty of the minimum financial security speaks, the authors ask what it could mean for to be living in a secure socio-cultural minimum. The fact is that poverty can be both "caused" by various forms of exclusion, as well as the socio-cultural exclusion promotes or "causes".

The Coming Age Of Scarcity : Preventing Mass Death And Genocide In The Twenty-First Century, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann Jan 1998

The Coming Age Of Scarcity : Preventing Mass Death And Genocide In The Twenty-First Century, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Books

The structure of the book is simple. The first part analyzes major forces having an impact on the survivability of civilization as we know it into the twenty-first century. It outlines the challenges we face, including overpopulation, pressure upon the land, migration, ecological damage, and social instability. In part two, we present more detailed discussion of the problem of scarcity and how it relates to conflict. The authors in this section argue that the current level of human activity is unsustainable. They demonstrate that population growth in particular affects the natural world and can affect the social order and international …

20-Historical Archaeology In Battle Creek, Michigan: The 1996 Field Season At The Warren B. Shepard Site (20ca104), Nicole Kuemin, Christine Mcmillan, Michael S. Nassaney, Carol Nickolai, William Sauck, Daniel Sayers

Archaeological Reports

An intensive archaeological survey was conducted at the Shepard site (20CA104) in Battle Creek, Michigan from April 29 through July 12, 1996. Historical background research had indicated that the site was the location of Native American activity until the 1830s when it was settled by the town's first school teacher, Warren B. Shepard. In the early 1850s, Shepard constructed a large, brick Greek Revival house on the site that stands to this day. The house and its associated landscape have been the focus of our investigations.

Documentary evidence suggested the presence of various outbuildings and other landscape features that were …

The Swami And The Rorschach: Spiritual Practice, Religious Experience, And Perception, Diane Jonte-Pace Jan 1998

The Swami And The Rorschach: Spiritual Practice, Religious Experience, And Perception, Diane Jonte-Pace

Religious Studies

I propose that the Rorschach test might serve well as such a method for investigating religion, spirituality, psychological structure, and cognition. In addition, it might bring some clarity to the debate between the decontextualists and the constructivists. In this essay I discuss three unique Rorschach studies that, in my view, represent an important step toward such a psychology of religious experience and examine their implications for Forman's decontextualist thesis.

Regenerative Biology: New Tissues For Old, David L. Stocum Jan 1998

Regenerative Biology: New Tissues For Old, David L. Stocum

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Throughout the human life cycle, tissues are regenerated either continuously to maintain tissue integrity in the face of normal cell turnover or in response to acute or chronic damage due to trauma or disease states. Blood, epithelia of skin and tubular organs, hair and nails, and bone marrow are examples of human tissues which regenerate continuously as well as in response to damage. Bone, muscle, adrenal cortex and kidney epithelium also regenerate in response to damage, and bone is continually remodeled in response to stress vectors.

The response of many other vital tissues to damage, however, is not regeneration but …
