Permutation Of Two-Term Local Quadrat Variance Analysis: General Concepts For Interpretation Of Peaks, Jonathan E. Campbell, Scott B. Franklin, David J. Gibson, Jonathan A. Newman

Many ecological studies use Two-Term Local Quadrat Variance Analysis (TTLQV) and its derivatives for spatial pattern analysis. Currently, rules for determining variance peak significance are arbitrary. Variance peaks found at block size 1 and at > 50 % of the transect length are the only peaks whose use is explicitly prohibited. Although the use of variance peaks found at block sizes > 10 % of the transect length have also been warned against, many researchers interpret them regardless. We show in this paper that variance peaks derived from TTLQV are subject to additional ‘rules of thumb’. Through the use of randomization and …

Environmental Management For Animal-Based Industries : Dairy Farm Effluent, Western Australia Agriculture Western Australia Bunbury Regional Office., Dairy Industry Nutrient Strategy Working Group (W.A.)
Bulletins 4000 -
The effluent which collects around dairies and their associated feeding facilities should be regarded as a resource to be retained and used on the farm, rather than a waste product for disposal.
These guidelines aim to assist dairy farmers plan effluent management systems which are practical, as well as easy to install and manage, while also being acceptable to the agencies and authorities given the responsibility of protecting the environment. .

Grandmothering, Menopause, And The Evolution Of Human Life Histories, K. Hawkes, J.F. O'Connell, N.G. Blurton Jones, H. Alvarez, Eric Charnov
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Long postmenopausal lifespans distinguish humans from all other primates. This pattern may have evolved with mother—child food sharing, a practice that allowed aging females to enhance their daughters fertility, thereby increasing selection against senescence. Combined with Charnov's dimensionless assembly rules for mammalian life histories, this hypothesis also accounts for our late maturity, small size at weaning, and high fertility. It has implications for past human habitat choice and social organization and for ideas about the importance of extended learning and paternal provisioning in human evolution.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The purpose of this paper is to describe strategies that caregivers use while reading books with young children. Research indicates that caregivers: a) use strategies that simplify or extend book language, b) use prosody, and c) use management strategies so the book reading event is meaningful for children. Then, how teachers of preschool children can use these same strategies to plan meaningful book sharing events for children in preschool settings is described.

Papers in Microbiology
Two bacteriophage collections were examined with regard to their ability to form plaques on multiple bacterial host species. Nine of 10 phages studied were found to be broad-host-range bacteriophages. These phages fell into two groups. Group 1, the SN series, was isolated from sewage treatment plant samples with Sphaerotilus natans ATCC 13338 as a host. The DNAs of these bacteriophages contained modified bases and were insensitive to cleavage by type I and II restriction endonucleases. The efficiency of plating of these bacteriophages was changed only slightly on the alternate host. Group 2, the BHR series, was isolated by a two-host …

Determination Of Bumper Styling And Engineering Parameters To Reduce Pedestrian Leg Injuries, Peter J. Schuster, Bradley Staines
Determination Of Bumper Styling And Engineering Parameters To Reduce Pedestrian Leg Injuries, Peter J. Schuster, Bradley Staines
Mechanical Engineering
The European Commission is proposing legislation aimed at reducing the severity of injuries sustained by pedestrians in the event of an impact with the front-end of a motor vehicle. One aspect of this proposed legislation is reducing the pedestrian's leg injuries due to contact with the bumper and frontal surfaces of a vehicle, assessed using a 'pedestrian leg impact device,' or 'leg-form.'
This proposed legislation presents the challenge of designing a bumper system which achieves the required performance in the leg-form impact-without sacrificing the bumper's primary function of vehicle protection during low-speed impacts. The first step in meeting this challenge …

Pandora's Amphora: The Ambiguity Of Gifts, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Pandora's Amphora: The Ambiguity Of Gifts, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Articles
The law is notoriously suspicious of gifts, giving gratuitous promises less protection than contracts. An analysis based on the political philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel and the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan reveals that the law's ambivalence reflects the fundamental ambiguous nature of gifts.
The two dominant jurisprudential analyses of gift-utilitarianism and romanticism-share the single erroneous assumption that contract relations are characterized by atomistic rational behavior. The utilitarian, who views all human relations in terms of individual self-interest, analyzes gift as a primitive, incomplete, imperfect, and inferior form of contract. In contrast, the romantic, who believes that human relations can, and …

Investigation Of The Roles Of Toxin-Coregulated Pili And Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin Pili In The Pathogenesis Of Vibrio Cholerae O139 Infection, Carol O. Tacket, Ronald K. Taylor, Genevieve Losonsky, Yu Lim
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this study, adult volunteers were fed tcpA and mshA deletion mutants of V. cholerae O139 strain CVD 112 to determine the role of toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) and mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) in intestinal colonization. Eight of 10 volunteers who received CVD 112 or CVD 112 ΔmshA shed the vaccine strains in their stools; the geometric mean peak excretion for both groups was 1.4 × 105 CFU/g of stool. In contrast, only one of nine recipients of CVD 112 ΔtcpA shed vibrios in his stool (P < 0.01); during the first 24 h after inoculation, 3 × 102 CFU/g was recovered from this volunteer. All recipients of CVD …

Regional Extension In-Service Training Via The Internet, Robert M. Lippert, Owen Plank, Jim Camberato, John Chastain
Journal of Extension
Exclusive use of the Internet was utilized for a regional county Extension agent in-service training titled "Land Application of Animal Waste". The in-service training material for the two week session was posted on the World Wide Web. Ten specialists from South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama and 22 Extension agents from South Carolina and Georgia were engaged in Internet discussions focusing on the Web material and related personal experiences. In a post-training questionnaire, agent responses were strongly favorable to this form of training and indicated that the Internet can be an effective way of implementing an in-service Extension training for certain …
