The Representation Of Gender In Current Esl Reading Materials, Kyunghee Ma

Dissertations and Theses

This study is a partial replication of E.W. Hoomes' dissertation (1978). The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not gender bias exists in current ESL reading materials and in cases where gender bias exists, whether it varies by learning levels. Eleven reading books which were used in ESL classes at Portland State University were selected from the textbook lists of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall in 1997. Content analysis was employed to examine distribution of males and females in passages and illustrations.

Gender bias was found to be statistically significant in the following categories: the assignment of …

Bordetella Holmesii-Like Organisms Associated With Septicemia, Endocarditis, And Respiratory Failure, Perry J. Severance, Yi-Wei Tang, Marlene K. Hopkins, Christopher P. Kolbert, Paul A. Hartley, David H. Persing Feb 1998

Bordetella Holmesii-Like Organisms Associated With Septicemia, Endocarditis, And Respiratory Failure, Perry J. Severance, Yi-Wei Tang, Marlene K. Hopkins, Christopher P. Kolbert, Paul A. Hartley, David H. Persing

Articles

We recovered an unusual bacterial strain from blood or sputum of three patients with septicemia, endocarditis, and/or respiratory failure. The three isolates were thin, curved, gram-negative, light brown, pigment-producing bacilli with variable catalase activity. They were asaccharolytic, oxidasenegative, nonmotile, and fastidious. Identification was not possible on the basis of these characteristics alone or in combination with cellular fatty acid profiles. Nucleic acid amplification and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that all three isolates were identical and most closely related to the emerging pathogen Bordetella holmesii, diverging from the published sequence at three nucleotide positions (99.8% similarity). …

Righting The Balance: An Inquiry Into The Foundations And Limits Of Freedom Of Expression, Steven J. Heyman Feb 1998

Righting The Balance: An Inquiry Into The Foundations And Limits Of Freedom Of Expression, Steven J. Heyman

All Faculty Scholarship

Contemporary disputes over the First Amendment often result in deadlock. One side stresses the paramount value of free speech, while the other side points to the harms that particular kinds of speech can cause. It is difficult to see how this impasse can be broken without a more general account of the scope of free expression: a view that integrates both the justifications and the limits of freedom of speech into a coherent whole. This Article makes a start toward developing such a theory. Its central thesis is that freedom of speech is a right that is limited by the …

Trichinosis Prevalence From Farm To Table, Kelly Namminga, Bob Thaler Feb 1998

Trichinosis Prevalence From Farm To Table, Kelly Namminga, Bob Thaler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Trichinosis is a foodborne disease caused by the parasite (worm) Trichinella spiralis. Many meat-eating animals, including humans, can be infected with trichinosis. In humans, the incidence of infection depends upon the number of Trichinella larvae ingested. The initial sign of trichinosis infection in humans is gastroenteritis. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Many cases are mild and generally go by unnoticed or are confused with other foodborne illnesses with similar symptoms.

A General Model For Print Delivery Of Internet Documents, Mohan Dhandapani Feb 1998

A General Model For Print Delivery Of Internet Documents, Mohan Dhandapani

Theses

With the explosion of the Internet there are abundant opportunities for budding authors (writers and designers). Their content can be eaily posted on the Web and accessed by a wide reader base through WWW. However, this on-demand and on-site publishing is limited to on-screen viewing and desktop printing. As more and more books and materials are accessed, there is growing need for on-demand printed copies. Ordering a printed copy is still a traditional business which limits amature authors and users from getting easy access to them. Some of the on-line bookstores provide only the purchase transactions through on-line, while the …

An Economic Assessment Of The Myanmar Rice Sector: Current Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Gail L. Cramer, Eric J. Wailes

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

In this study, the Myanmar rice economy is described in the context of the current political situation and state of national economic development. The forces that are changing rice production and exports are identified; however, the rate of development involves a complex integration of government intervention and politics, as well as availability of resources. Probable scenarios for rice production and export are projected based on recent growth trends and expected infrastructure development. The Arkansas Global Rice Model is used to integrate the Myanmar rice sector with the global rice market in developing projections.

Esl Learners: Process Writing And Publishing Good Literature, Jane F. Rudden, Anita R. Nedeff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this article is to report on our examination of books written by children who are ESL learners, and compare the books with criteria for meritorious literature (Norton, 1995), and to discuss the implications of the results relevant to process writing instruction with second language learners. The books examined were written by students in grades K through 5 in a rural elementary school. They had been in the United States for a short period of time. Their familiarization with process writing was due to its being a part of their daily curriculum. The school's writing program embraces those …

Animal Play, Susan Thorpe Feb 1998

Animal Play, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

The animal kingdom is on the brink of extinction so it is essential that the males and females make contact. Successive words of a chain make either a single word (e.g. OVERLOOK) or a two-word phrase (e.g. MYSTERY TOUR) Rearranged, the letters of the bracketed phrase make the missing words. For example, FLY ----- ---- ----- FLY (OH, WE PREPARE USA) has the answer FLY-PAPER-WARE-HOUSE-FLY.

Serge Louis Ballif: A Swiss-American, Jae R. Ballif

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Over a dozen years ago, a young man entered my office. He was a stranger to me. He placed his briefcase on my desk, opened it, and brought out several old books. He talked rapidly, giving me information faster than I could assimilate it. I soon learned that the books were from the shelves of the library at the University of Bern in Switzerland, and that they were written by my ancestors. I also learned that Gabriel Jacob Ballif, my fourth great-grandfather, was the author of one of the books. It is entitled Systematic Physics, and was published in …

Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly Feb 1998

Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Gardening is an exciting, approachable way to teach kids about plants. A good gardening program doesn't need to be one more thing thrown on your plate; by integrating it into the curriculum, gardening can be easy and interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary projects enhance young peoples' ability to make connections among isolated facts, and to find meaning among those arbitrary facts. A U.S. News and World Report article (January 1993) pointed out that some interdisciplinary pilot projects in New York and Los Angeles schools even improved school attendance, and decreased drop-out rates.
