"Where The Wappetaw Independent Congregational Church Stood...", Archaeological Testing At 38ch1682, Charleston County, Sc, Christopher Ohm Clement, Ramona M. Grunden

Research Manuscript Series

This report presents the results of limited archaeological testing at Wappetaw Independent Church (38CHI682), Charleston County, South Carolina. Wappetaw was founded by a group of 51 Congregationalist emigrants from New England, who arrived in the Carolinas around 1696. The primary focus of documentary research for this project was the earliest years of settlement; settlement patterning and motivations for immigration are examined. Archaeologically, remains of the last church to occupy the site (ca. 1783-1897) were securely identified, and a tentative reconstruction of the foundation of this structure is provided.  Evidence of earlier structures was also encountered, and indicates that at least …

Development Of A Blocking Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Serum Antibodies To O157 Antigen Of Escherichia Coli, William Laegreid, Mark Hoffman, James Keen, Robert Elder, Jimmy Kwang Mar 1998

Development Of A Blocking Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Serum Antibodies To O157 Antigen Of Escherichia Coli, William Laegreid, Mark Hoffman, James Keen, Robert Elder, Jimmy Kwang

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The O157 antigen of Escherichia coli shares structural elements with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens of other bacterial species, notably Brucella abortus and Yersinia enterocolitica O9, a fact that confounds the interpretation of assays for anti-O157 antibodies. To address this problem, a blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) was designed with E. coli O157:H7 LPS as the antigen and a monoclonal antibody specific for E. coli O157, designated 13B3, as the competing antibody. The bELISA had equivalent sensitivity to, and significantly higher specificity than, the indirect ELISA (iELISA), detecting anti-O157 antibodies in sera from cattle experimentally inoculated with O157:H7. Only 13% of sera …

Raines V. Byrd: A Death Knell For The Congressional Suit?, Adam L. Blank Mar 1998

Raines V. Byrd: A Death Knell For The Congressional Suit?, Adam L. Blank

Mercer Law Review

In Raines v. Byrd, the Supreme Court of the United States denied standing to six members of Congress who challenged the constitutionality of the Line Item Veto Act. In its first consideration of congressional standing in nearly two decades, the Court held that a perceived diminution in institutional voting strength did not create a sufficiently particularized injury in fact to satisfy the Article III "case or controversy" requirement.

Off-Farm Work By Census-Farm Operators: An Overview Of Structure And Mobility Patterns, Michael Swidinsky, Wayne H. Howard, Alfons Weersink Mar 1998

Off-Farm Work By Census-Farm Operators: An Overview Of Structure And Mobility Patterns, Michael Swidinsky, Wayne H. Howard, Alfons Weersink

Agribusiness

The purpose of this paper is to provide descriptive statistics on off-farm labour supply and farm/off-farm labour reallocation for Canadian farmers using cross-sectional data and cross-sectional panel data, respectively, obtained from the Canadian Census of Agriculture. This report is part of a larger study on the off-farm labour supply and labour mobility of farm operators (Swidinsky, 1997). The data indicates that a growing proportion of operators worked off-farm between 1971 and 1991. As well, operators who work off-farm have allocated greater amounts of time to the off-farm labour market. The share of census-farm operators reporting 97-228 days of off-farm work …

Are Microhabitat Preferences Of Coexisting Species Under Selection And Adaptive?, Thomas E. Martin Mar 1998

Are Microhabitat Preferences Of Coexisting Species Under Selection And Adaptive?, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Microhabitat preferences are assumed to be adaptive, suggesting that fitness is higher in preferred microhabitats and potentially reflecting natural selection on habitat choices. I examined microhabitat preferences and adaptiveness of preferences for seven bird species coexisting in high elevation snowmelt drainages based on study of microhabitat and survival of 1556 nests. Habitat features in the nest patch differed from both random and non-use (sites centered on the same plant species as used for the nest) sites within each bird species, indicating nonrandom nest site choice. Bird species within a nesting guild (ground, shrub) also differed from each other based on …

A Constitution Of Democratic Experimentalism, Michael C. Dorf, Charles F. Sabel Mar 1998

A Constitution Of Democratic Experimentalism, Michael C. Dorf, Charles F. Sabel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professors Dorf and Sabel identify a new form of government, democratic experimentalism, in which power is decentralized to enable citizens and other actors to utilize their local knowledge to fit solutions to their individual circumstances, but in which regional and national coordinating bodies require actors to share their knowledge with others facing similar problems. This information pooling, informed by the example of novel kinds of coordination within and among private firms, both increases the efficiency of public administration by encouraging mutual learning among its parts and heightens its accountability through participation of citizens in the decisions that …
