Spotted Knapweed Distribution In Stock Camps And Trails Of The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, W. Andrew Marcus, Gary Milner, Bruce Maxwell Apr 1998

Spotted Knapweed Distribution In Stock Camps And Trails Of The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, W. Andrew Marcus, Gary Milner, Bruce Maxwell

Great Basin Naturalist

This article documents spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa Lam.) in 30 campsites and along 5 trails in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and assesses the role of disturbance and environmental factors in controlling infestation. Spotted knapweed was present in only 6 of 30 surveyed campsites and limited portions of all 5 trails that were sampled. All spotted knapweed in camps was below 1700 m elevation, in open canopy, and in areas with an opportunity class disturbance ranking of 3 or 4. Overall disturbance levels measured using U.S. Forest Service Site Impact Worksheets (SIWs) did not help predict occurrence of spotted knapweed, although …

Vegetal Change On A Northern Utah Foothill Range In The Absence Of Livestock Grazing Between 1948 And 1982, Dennis D. Austin, Philip J. Urness Apr 1998

Vegetal Change On A Northern Utah Foothill Range In The Absence Of Livestock Grazing Between 1948 And 1982, Dennis D. Austin, Philip J. Urness

Great Basin Naturalist

Reexamination of a semiarid foothill rangeland, first evaluated in 1948, indicated that secondary succession continues to shift toward a perennial grass-forb community formerly dominated by xeric shrubs, particularly big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. vaseyana). The direct role in livestock grazing in establishment and maintenance of shrub-dominant plant communities appears confirmed in the decline of shrubs upon cessation of livestock grazing in summer and continued browsing by mule deer in winter. The reduction of shrub forages on mule deer winter ranges is a major factor in population declines.

The Persistence Of African Religious Beliefs And Practices As Cultural Resistance To Slavery In Pre-Emancipation Colonial Tobago, Okokon Okon Essiet Apr 1998

The Persistence Of African Religious Beliefs And Practices As Cultural Resistance To Slavery In Pre-Emancipation Colonial Tobago, Okokon Okon Essiet

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines African religion as a form of cultural resistance to slavery in pre-emancipation Tobago. African religion was a tool of resistance to enslavement and oppression in pre-emancipation colonial Tobago. African religion acted as a source of empowerment, cohesion, and identity at a time when the colonial authorities in Tobago were attempting to strip the African of his/her Culture. This research examines the social dimensions of this struggle for religious/cultural supremacy between master and the enslaved African.

The purpose of this study is to show that the colonial authorities in Tobago, in order to sustain their basic economy had …

Breeding Birds At The Idaho National Engineering And Environmental Laboratory, 1985–1991, James R. Belthoff, Leon R. Powers, Timothy D. Reynolds

Great Basin Naturalist

During the summers of 1985–1991, bird censuses were conducted along 13 permanent routes located at the 2315-km2 Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL, formerly INEL) in southeastern Idaho. The objectives of the surveys were to (1) compare avifauna in and near facility complex sites with remote, relatively undisturbed habitats, (2) identify trends in populations of sagebrush-obligate species and other common shrub-steppe species, and (3) determine the presence, abundance, and population status of species of special concern. Five routes were official U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division 40.0-km Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes (formerly administered by the U.S. Fish …

On March 26, 1987 an Atlas Centaur rocket (AC-67) carrying a Navy communications satellite was given a green light for launch by Cape Canaveral Range Weather. There were rain-showers in the area. By the time liftoff occurred, one had moved over the launch complex. AC-67 ascended into a heavy shower where the plume of ionized exhaust gasses assisted in triggering a lightning strike...a deadly conduit to an electrically-charged atmosphere. The boosterÕs guidance system was fried and the rocket veered off course. To protect the public, the rocket was destroyed by the range safety officer (RSO). The accident cost taxpayers $250 …

Managing Island Biotas: Brown Treesnake Control Using Barrier Technology, Gad Perry, Earl W. Campbell Iii, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts Apr 1998

Managing Island Biotas: Brown Treesnake Control Using Barrier Technology, Gad Perry, Earl W. Campbell Iii, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis), accidentally introduced to the previously snake-free U.S. island of Guam after World War 11, decimated the island's naive wildlife. Today, it periodically stows away on craft going to other islands where the ecological damage may be repeated. Barriers offer an effective tool for keeping the snakes out of areas from which they can disperse off-island, as well as sites identified as critical for the protection of human health, conduct of economic activity, or conservation of endangered species. The authors have developed a variety of barrier designs which repulse at least 95% of snake …
