Aspen Regeneration And Response To Fire In The Intermountain West, Kelly J. Mccloskey May 1998

Aspen Regeneration And Response To Fire In The Intermountain West, Kelly J. Mccloskey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The history of Populus tremuloides regeneration in the Intermountain West, particularly western Wyoming, is one of prolific vegetative reproduction following wildland fire. The reproductive physiology of aspen and its disturbance-response characteristics are explored through a review of previous studies. The combination of fire suppression and increased herbivory on aspen by wild and domestic ungulates is likely facilitating conifer invasion of areas historically dominated by aspen as has been observed in parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado over the past 100 years. A case study of the regenerative response of aspen to wildland fire in western Wyoming demonstrates how physiology, life …

The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz May 1998

The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In light of the current re-evaluation of points of identity and divergence between Pauline Christianity and Judaism, this thesis presents a study of how each religion applied a single motif from the Psalter: the enemies of God's people. We start from the obvious common ground, the Old Testament shared by both Paul and the Jew as their sacred text. The work focuses on the unique opportunity afforded by the text of Romans 3:9-20, where Paul cites the Old Testament depiction of the wicked enemies. Next, we survey how apocalyptic and rabbinic Judaism developed and employed the enemy theme. Our conclusion …

Being Alone: The Experience Of Elderly Homebound Females, Sharon Davis Burt Dnsc, Msn, Rn May 1998

Being Alone: The Experience Of Elderly Homebound Females, Sharon Davis Burt Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Elderly women comprise one of the fastest growing segments of the population in the United States. This growth is due in large part to increasing longevity, and a woman's life expectancy has now reached 79 years. However, along with those added years comes an increase in morbidity and a greater likelihood of living alone. This study describes the life experience of a specific group of elderly women, those who are homebound and living alone. When elderly women are included in research, the same combination of descriptors used for the participants in this study has not been incorporated. Consequently, while much …

Localized Temporal Decorrelation For Video Compression, Dinesh Nadarajah May 1998

Localized Temporal Decorrelation For Video Compression, Dinesh Nadarajah

Theses

Many of the current video compression algorithms perform analysis and coding operations in a block-wise manner. Most of them use a motion compensated DCT algorithm as the basis. Many other codecs, mostly academic and in their infancy and known as Second Generation techniques, utilize region and contour based and model based techniques. Unfortunately, these second-generation methods have not been successful in gaining widespread acceptance in both the standards and the consumer world. Many of them require specialized computationally intensive software and/or hardware. Due to these shortcomings, current block based methods have been finetuned to get better performance at even very …

Regulation Of The Phonotactic Threshold Of The Female Cricket, Acheta Domesticus: Juvenile Hormone Iii, Allatectomy, L1 Auditory Neuron Thresholds And Environmental Factors, John Stout, Jing Hao, P. Kim, David Mbungu, M. Bronsert, S. Slikkers, J. Maier, D. Kim, K. Bacchus, Gordon Atkins May 1998

Regulation Of The Phonotactic Threshold Of The Female Cricket, Acheta Domesticus: Juvenile Hormone Iii, Allatectomy, L1 Auditory Neuron Thresholds And Environmental Factors, John Stout, Jing Hao, P. Kim, David Mbungu, M. Bronsert, S. Slikkers, J. Maier, D. Kim, K. Bacchus, Gordon Atkins

Faculty Publications

Juvenile hormone III (JHIII), when applied to the abdomen of 1-day-old female Acheta domesticus (in quantities that would create JHIII titers in the hemolymph that were within the range measured in females of this species) caused a significant decrease in phonotactic thresholds (Fig. 1). Removal of the corpora allata from 5-day-old females with low phonotactic thresholds caused significantly increased phonotactic thresholds 2-5 days later. After a temporary increase (24 h) of, on average, about 25 dB, the phonotactic thresholds drop to about 10 dB above preallatectomy levels (Fig. 2), but remain significantly higher than controls. Application of JHIII to allatectomized …

North American T-6, Michael Halminen May 1998

North American T-6, Michael Halminen

Theses

The goal of my thesis was to use all of my design, illustration and photographic skills to create an excellent interactive CD on the North American T-6. The most widespread and ver satile training aircraft ever built, the T-6 was used by more air forces world-wide than any other. A brilliant concept developed and mod ified throughout a decade resulted in more than 17,000 flying machines, of which, more than 600 are still flying fifty years later. The best loved and most remembered single engine training aircraft of all time, the T-6 was an adaptable, rugged aircraft that performed in …

A Progressive Philippine School For Children: Proposal And Presentation For Prospective Parents, Severina M. Santos May 1998

A Progressive Philippine School For Children: Proposal And Presentation For Prospective Parents, Severina M. Santos

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Presents a philosophical framework for a proposed elementary school in the Philippines, the Philippine School for Children (PSC). It summarizes the major contributions of a family of theorists: Piaget, Dewey, and Vygotsky and applies their theories to the development of PSC. The study also includes a description of several features of a progressive classroom for kindergarten and grade one.

The content of the study serves as a basis for the presentation of a progressive approach to education to prospective parents. Possible questions from prospective parents are raised and addressed at the conclusion of the study.

Progressive Era Race Relations Cases In Their "Traditional" Context, Mark V. Tushnet May 1998

Progressive Era Race Relations Cases In Their "Traditional" Context, Mark V. Tushnet

Vanderbilt Law Review

The pioneering African-American historian Rayford Logan called the early years of the Progressive era the "nadir" of race relations in the United States. Historians and political scientists who study the Supreme Court generally agree that Supreme Court decisions are rarely substantially out of line with the kind of sustained national consensus regarding race relations that Logan described. Professors Bernstein and Karman point to popular culture, including the roaring success of D.W. Griffith's epic Birth of a Nation attacking Reconstruction and defending the Ku Klux Klan, and elite opinion such as the flourishing of scientific racism to demonstrate that there was …

Race And The Court In The Progressive Era, Michael J. Klarman May 1998

Race And The Court In The Progressive Era, Michael J. Klarman

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the second decade of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court decided four prominent (groups of) cases involving race. On each occasion, the civil rights claim won in some significant sense. One set of cases involved so-called peonage legislation-laws that coerced (primarily) black labor. In Bailey v. Alabama, the Court invalidated under the federal Peonage Act of 18672 and the Thirteenth Amendment an Alabama law making it a crime to enter, with fraudulent intent, into a labor contract that provided for advance payment of wages; the law made breach of the contract prima facie evidence of fraudulent intent, and Alabama …

Heterologous Complementation Reveals That Mutant Alleles Of Qsr1 Render 60s Ribosomal Subunits Unstable And Translationally Inactive, Frederick A. Dick, Bernard L. Trumpower May 1998

Heterologous Complementation Reveals That Mutant Alleles Of Qsr1 Render 60s Ribosomal Subunits Unstable And Translationally Inactive, Frederick A. Dick, Bernard L. Trumpower

Dartmouth Scholarship

QSR1 is a highly conserved gene which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein that is required for joining of large and small ribosomal subunits. In this report we demonstrate heterologous complementation of a yeast QSR1 deletion strain with both the human and corn homologs and show that the human and corn proteins are assembled into hybrid yeast/human and yeast/corn ribosomes. While the homologous genes complement lethality of the QSR1 deletion, they also result in a diminished growth rate. Analyses of the translation rates of ribosomes containing the human and corn proteins reveal a partial loss of function. Velocity gradient analyses …

Effects Of Oxygen Variation On The Ecology Of Devil's Hole, Death Valley National Park, Norma J. Azad Apr 1998

Effects Of Oxygen Variation On The Ecology Of Devil's Hole, Death Valley National Park, Norma J. Azad

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The inability to rear Devil's Hole pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis Wales, in captivity, when captive propagation has been successful with other species of pupfish, led to the examination of environmental factors which are unique to Devil's Hole. It has been suggested that C. diabolis regularly experience developmental arrest due to hypoxic conditions. This arrest may be reversible in areas of the shallow shelf during periods of photosynthetic activity. Oxygen measurements over the shallow shelf reveal a gradient of oxygen variation with the greatest diel variability over the inner portion of the shelf diminishing to nearly imperceptible diel variation toward the outer …
