Effects Of Thinning And Nitrogen Fertilization On Sugars And Terpenes In Douglas-Fir Vascular Tissues: Implications For Black Bear Foraging, Bruce A. Kimball, Eric C. Turnblom, Dale L. Nolte, Doreen L. Griffin, Richard M. Engeman May 1998

Effects Of Thinning And Nitrogen Fertilization On Sugars And Terpenes In Douglas-Fir Vascular Tissues: Implications For Black Bear Foraging, Bruce A. Kimball, Eric C. Turnblom, Dale L. Nolte, Doreen L. Griffin, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The chemical constituents of coniferous vascular tissues play a role in bear forage selection. In particular, bear foraging preferences are related to the concentrations of simple sugars (nonstructural carbohydrates) and terpenes in the forage. Analyses of vascular tissue samples from trees collected in test plots indicted that both thinning and fertilization caused the sugar concentration of vascular tissues in the lower bole to increase. However, these treatments had no effect on the concentrations of hydrocarbon monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes, or sesquiterpenes. These results may explain the observations that black bears prefer to forage in thinned and fertilized stands.

A Behavioral Approach To Law And Economics, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls, Richard H. Thaler

Articles

Economic analysis of law usually proceeds under the assumptions of neoclassical economics. But empirical evidence gives much reason to doubt these assumptions; people exhibit bounded rationality, bounded self-interest, and bounded willpower. This article

Yoga Philosophy: Paths Of Actions And Knowledge, Ryan M. Wittekiend May 1998

Yoga Philosophy: Paths Of Actions And Knowledge, Ryan M. Wittekiend

Honors Theses

My focus in the following project is to examine and understand questions regarding how humankind should act and what we ought to strive to know through the context of the ancient Indian tradition of yoga philosophy. My ultimate goal is to understand the experience and role of the teachers who have the duty to guide the majority of us along the path of life and to examine the process of proper action and duty. I will carry out this investigation in four parts. First, I will examine the origins of spiritual and ritual thought explained in the ancient works of …

The Heart Of The Matter: The Property Right Conferred By Copyright, Douglas Y'Barbo May 1998

The Heart Of The Matter: The Property Right Conferred By Copyright, Douglas Y'Barbo

Mercer Law Review

The purpose of this Article is to offer a single coherent model that explains copyright law's essential features and to apply the model to reconcile the apparently disparate infringement decisions that comprise contemporary copyright law.

The fundamental premise underlying copyright law-and the one that I intend to dislodge-is that a copyright is a limited property right in relation to the author's original text. The thesis of this Article is that a "copyright" is not an enforceable property right in relation to a particular work of authorship or the expression embodied in it (i.e., "a text"). Instead, I shall demonstrate that …

"We The People" And Our Enduring Values, Susan Bandes May 1998

"We The People" And Our Enduring Values, Susan Bandes

Michigan Law Review

Akhil Amar chides legal scholars for believing that the current system of criminal procedure, both substantive and remedial, is constitutionally compelled. He writes, "Scholars should know better, but too few of those who write in criminal procedure do serious, sustained scholarship in constitutional law generally, or in fields like federal jurisdiction and remedies" (p. 115). Amar believes, as I do, that criminal procedure has been impoverished by its failure to connect to "larger themes of constitutional, remedial and jurisdictional theory" (p. 115). But as one who has done serious, sustained scholarship in all the areas Amar mentions - or so …

Diffuse Reflectance Changes During The Culture Of Cottage Cheese, Frederick Alan Payne, R. Carol Freels, Sue E. Nokes, Richard S. Gates May 1998

Diffuse Reflectance Changes During The Culture Of Cottage Cheese, Frederick Alan Payne, R. Carol Freels, Sue E. Nokes, Richard S. Gates

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A sensor for measuring diffuse reflectance of milk during the typical 6-h culture of cottage cheese was installed in a local manufacturing facility. Diffuse reflectance was found to increase slowly during the first three hours of the culture and increase rapidly toward the end of fermentation. The correlation between parameters generated from the diffuse reflectance profile and cutting time was sufficient to develop an algorithm for cutting time prediction. An algorithm incorporating tmax (time from adding culture to the maximum rate of change in reflectance) and slope of the reflectance curve at tmax predicted the operator selected cutting …

Synthesis Of Novel Amino Acids And 310- And Alpha-Helical Alpha, Alpha-Disubstituted Amino Acid Rich Antimicrobial Peptides, Thomas Scott Yokum May 1998

Synthesis Of Novel Amino Acids And 310- And Alpha-Helical Alpha, Alpha-Disubstituted Amino Acid Rich Antimicrobial Peptides, Thomas Scott Yokum

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Amphipathic peptides rich in α, α-disubstituted amino acids (ααAAs) were synthesized and examined for antimicrobial activity and helix preference in various solvent systems. Also, a series of polar, ααAAs were synthesized for incorporation into helical peptides and a red-shifted tryptophan analog was synthesized as a fluorescent probe.

A series of short, amphipathic, 310- and α-helical peptides containing 50 to 80 percent ααAAs was synthesized. Various combinations of 1-aminocyclohexane-lcarboxylic acid, α-aminoisobutyric acid, and 4-aminopiperidine-4-carboxylic acid were incorporated using preformed acid fluorides. In vitro testing revealed that most of these peptides show direct antibacterial activity against E. coli and …

Thermocycling As A Means Of Inducing Mechanical Fatigue In Dental Composites, N.H. Abu Kasim, J.F. Mccabe May 1998

Thermocycling As A Means Of Inducing Mechanical Fatigue In Dental Composites, N.H. Abu Kasim, J.F. Mccabe

Pre-2000

The effect of thermocycling on the fatigue behaviour of 5 commercially available dental composites; P50(P)1, Silux Plus(S)2, Heliomolar(H)3, Clearfil Photo Posterior-light activated(CLA)4 and Clearfil Posterior-chemically activated(CC)5 was investigated. One hundred and ten rectangular bar specimens were prepared for each materil and divided into 11 groups of 10 each. Test groups 1-6 were subjected to 0, 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 1000 thermal cycles respectively. Each thermal cycle consisted of 1 minute immersion time of 50 seconds per change. The control groups 7-11 were stored in distilled water at 370c for the equivalent time to complete 250, 500, 750, 1000 and …
