Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren May 1998

Information Content In American Television Advertising: A Replication And Update, Laura Kathleen Sandgren

Dissertations and Theses

Three hundred and seven randomly selected American network television commercials aired between October 18 and November 18, 1997 were analyzed to determine their informational value using the fourteen criteria established by Resnik and Stem in 1977. The results of this study were compared with Resnik and Stem's 1991 study, revealing that there has not been any significant change in the amount of information in American television commercials since Resnik and Stem's replication sample.

This study also used Resnik and Stem's (1977) criteria to further examine if the amount-of information contained in TV commercials varied depending on the gender or age …

Bridging The Gulf (New Haven, Ct), C. William Pollard May 1998

Bridging The Gulf (New Haven, Ct), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Delivered at the Yale Berkeley Seminar (hosted by Berkeley Divinity School at Yale) in New Haven, CT, this speech asks how Christians might bridge the gulf between work and faith (or God and profit). Pollard posits that the link between the two is to be found in people, all of whom are made in the image of God. In this framework, the corporate firm may be construed as an institution of moral formation.

Why Should Fathers Father?, Patricia Draper May 1998

Why Should Fathers Father?, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The findings about the ways in which components of men's human capital is translated into human capital of offspring are intriguing both for what the findings show about secular trends in fertility, consequences for child accomplishment, and for what they show about the importance of the child's mother in linking the father to the child. It is this issue, the mother as link to child and the nature of the father's relationships with the mother that I make the center of my remarks.

There are several things to keep in mind when we try to grasp the evolutionary big picture …

Empathy And Self-Acceptance: Necessary Qualities Of A Peer Helper, William T. Sharp May 1998

Empathy And Self-Acceptance: Necessary Qualities Of A Peer Helper, William T. Sharp

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a preliminary study of the qualities of people who chose to be peer helpers. A review of the literature on helping theories led to the conclusion that empathy and self-acceptance were necessary elements of a helper. This study hoped to lend support to this theory. The hypothesis stated that students electing to take a peer helping training course would have different levels of empathy and self-acceptance than those in a cooking class. These qualities were measured using a psychological inventory, and the scores of 115 adolescent subjects (n=115) were compared. There was no significant difference between students …

Lake Ontario Supply Modeling And Forecasting, Joseph Genter May 1998

Lake Ontario Supply Modeling And Forecasting, Joseph Genter

Theses

Lake Ontario's outflow and level have many effects on surrounding communities and down stream populations in northeastern United States. Since many people and industries rely on Lake Ontario for recreation, power generation, and navigation, to name a few, significant effort has focused on forecasting the water levels and water supplies. This analysis concentrates on forecasting the water supply into Lake Ontario. Independent time series models were developed for (1) Lake Ontario's supply from Lake Erie and for (2) the remaining "local" supply, also termed net basin supply, over the period from 1900 through 1992. These two models were combined to …

Gene Expression In Two Cyanobacteria, Freshwater Synechococcus Sp. Pcc 7942 And Oceanic Synechococcus Sp. Wh 7803, In Response To Ammonium, Nitrate Or Iron, Abbas Sadeghi May 1998

Gene Expression In Two Cyanobacteria, Freshwater Synechococcus Sp. Pcc 7942 And Oceanic Synechococcus Sp. Wh 7803, In Response To Ammonium, Nitrate Or Iron, Abbas Sadeghi

Dissertations and Theses

The transcriptional response of freshwater Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942 and oceanic Synechococcus sp. WH 7803 to ammonium, nitrate or iron was studied in single or multiple factor limited cultures. Both strains showed maximum production of NiR mRNA when grown in nitrate-containing media. When grown in ammonium-containing medium, they did not show any signal for NiR mRNA synthesis. The influence on the transcription of NiR mRNA by iron as sole limiting nutrient was also evaluated. Iron increased the NiR mRNA whether or not the positive effect of nitrate was already present. The hybridization signal of mRNA for the large subunit of …
