Bennet V. Spear: Lions, Tigers And Bears Beware; The Decline Of Environmental Protection, Preeti S. Chaudhari

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The conservationist purpose of several environmental statutes is eroding. This casenote examines the Supreme Court's decision in Bennett v. Spear, in which the Court expanded standing by holding that even commercial entities may sue under the Endangered Species Act's citizen suit provision. The Note traces the progression and development of standing, both generally and with respect to federal environmental statutes. It then analyzes the Bennett v. Spear decision, focusing on the Supreme Court's shift away from environmental interests and toward those of commerce. Finally, the author offers three strategies to restore the environmental protectionist purpose of the Endangered Species Act.

What Sensory Signals Are About, Crawford Elder Jul 1998

What Sensory Signals Are About, Crawford Elder

Philosophy Articles

Kathleen Akins argues that "the traditional view" of sensory systems assumes too quickly that their function is detecting features of the outside environment. Instead, some systems are "narcissistic"--their signals tell their own states--and others may send signals that are not about anything at all. But Akins overlooks that "traditionalists" may argue, with Millikan, that the function of sensory systems may be steering motor routines. Aboutness comes in as how the systems have steered in ways evolution liked--by gearing steering to external features. Color vision and olfaction, for example, are thus, about external features.

Replication Banding And Sister-Chromatid Exchange Of Chromosomes Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Q. Zhang, W. R. Wolters, T. R. Tiersch Jul 1998

Replication Banding And Sister-Chromatid Exchange Of Chromosomes Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Q. Zhang, W. R. Wolters, T. R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

A replication banding procedure using fluorouracil (FU) and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was developed for use with cultured leukocytes of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Analyzable banding patterns were produced on chromosomes stained with a fluorochrome plus Giemsa (FPG) method. The consistency of the chromosomal bands was evaluated by computer-assisted image analysis. Banding patterns of representative chromosomes including those bearing nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) were reproducible. A standard RBG-banded karyotype (R bands by BrdU and Giemsa) was established with idiograms of each chromosome. We also developed procedures to study sister- chromatid exchange (SCE) and sister-chromatid differentiation (SCD) in cultured leukocytes, without addition of …

Gap Analysis Of The Vegetation Of The Intermountain Semi-Desert Ecoregion, David M. Stoms, Frank W. Davis, Kenneth L. Driese, Kelly M. Cassidy, Michael P. Murray

Great Basin Naturalist

A conservation gap analysis was conducted for the Intermountain Semi-Desert ecoregion to assess the representation of land-cover types within areas managed primarily for biodiversity objectives. Mapped distributions of plant communities were summarized by land-management status categories. The total amount of land permanently protected in the ecoregion is
