Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple Sep 1998

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Faculty Publications

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Petrographic and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

The Plant Cdna Lct1 Mediates The Uptake Of Calcium And Cadmium In Yeast, Stephen Clemens, Danuta M. Antosiewicz, John M. Ward, Daniel P. Schachtman, Julian I. Schroeder Sep 1998

The Plant Cdna Lct1 Mediates The Uptake Of Calcium And Cadmium In Yeast, Stephen Clemens, Danuta M. Antosiewicz, John M. Ward, Daniel P. Schachtman, Julian I. Schroeder

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Nonessential metal ions such as cadmium are most likely transported across plant membranes via transporters for essential cations. To identify possible pathways for Cd2+ transport we tested putative plant cation transporters for Cd2+ uptake activity by expressing cDNAs in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and found that expression of one clone, LCT1, renders the growth of yeast more sensitive to cadmium. Ion flux assays showed that Cd2+ sensitivity is correlated with an increase in Cd2+ uptake. LCT1-dependent Cd2+ uptake is saturable, lies in the high-affinity range (apparent KM for Cd2+ = 33 µM) and is …

Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan Sep 1998

Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serine/threonine protein kinases have been shown to reversibly regulate cell-cell communication through gap junctions formed by connexin 43 (Cx43) (Godwin et al.7 1993). The Cx43 protein expression levels are unclear and what role phosphorylation plays in the regulation of signal transduction through these gap junctions during heart formation. Reportedly, mutations which replace potentially phosphorylatable serines within the Cx43 protein are associated with heart malformations (Britz-Cunningham et al.. 1995), highlighting the importance of determining the levels of Cx43 and the activities of PKA and PKC during heart development.

Western analysis performed on hearts from developmentally significant time points revealed principally high …

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie Sep 1998

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. Yet the enzyme appears to be limited in amount and distribution in newborn rats. In this study, Na+, K+- ATPase expression and distribution in early postnatal rats were studied …

The Chickpea Book : A Technical Guide To Chickpea Production, Stephen Loss, Neil Brandon, K H M. Siddique Sep 1998

The Chickpea Book : A Technical Guide To Chickpea Production, Stephen Loss, Neil Brandon, K H M. Siddique

Bulletins 4000 -

The area of chickpea production in Australia has expanded rapidly in recent years especially in south-western Australia. This has been partly brought about by the keen interest of farmers and a concerted research effort and industry development by Agriculture Western Australia, The Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA) and other institutions, in partnership with the Grains Research and Development Corporation and other industry funding bodies. Private consultants, grain traders and other industry groups have also contributed to the expansion of the industry.

Much of the local knowledge generated by these research and development projects has been published in various …

The Mortenson Ranch: Cattle And Trees At Home On The Range. A Restoration Guidebook, Susan E. Boettcher, W. Carter Johnson, Scott Kronberg, F. Robert Gartner, Clarence Todd, Jeff Mortenson, Scott Fausti

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Early agriculture on western rangeland met with little success and resulted in serious consequences including soil erosion, loss of native woodlands and wildlife, and economic ruin. The Mortenson family in Stanley County, South Dakota, has been engaged in restoring degraded rangeland on their ranch for more than 50 years. Their primary goal has been to return the land to its condition prior to white settlement while maintaining a profitable cattle ranching operation. In recent years the ranch has served as a model of successful ranching based on a conservation ethic. This guidebook summarizes the restoration techniques and grazing regime used …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Requires Intimin For Enteropathogenicity In Calves, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Brad T. Bosworth, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien Sep 1998

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Requires Intimin For Enteropathogenicity In Calves, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Brad T. Bosworth, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains require intimin to induce attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions in newborn piglets. Infection of newborn calves with intimin-positive or intimin-negative EHEC O157: H7 demonstrated that intimin is needed for colonization, A/E lesions, and disease in cattle. These results suggest that experiments to determine if intimin-based vaccines reduce O157:H7 levels in cattle are warranted.

Fictional Persona Test: Copyright Preemption In Human Audiovisual Characters, Peter K. Yu Sep 1998

Fictional Persona Test: Copyright Preemption In Human Audiovisual Characters, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Whether a producer's copyright in human audiovisual characters preempts the actors' rights of publicity claims is the focus of this Note. Part I outlines the framework of state right of publicity law and traces the development of case law involving such a right. Because "[a]dvertisers who want to run a particular advertisement nationally must comply with the law of all fifty states," this Note focuses on the right of publicity of the state with the broadest interpretation-the state of California. This Part shows that, under existing California right of publicity law, virtually anything evoking one's personal identity, including copyrighted materials, …

Feeding Preferences Of A Generalist Salt-Marsh Crab: Relative Importance Of Multiple Plant Traits, Steven C. Pennings, Thomas H. Carefoot, Erin L. Siska, Margo E. Chase, Teresa A. Page Sep 1998

Feeding Preferences Of A Generalist Salt-Marsh Crab: Relative Importance Of Multiple Plant Traits, Steven C. Pennings, Thomas H. Carefoot, Erin L. Siska, Margo E. Chase, Teresa A. Page

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Few studies have evaluated the relative importance of multiple plant traits to herbivore diet choice, especially with an experimental approach. Moreover, although circumstantial evidence points to plant toughness and silica content as important deter- minents of diet choice, few studies have experimentally demonstrated that these factors actually deter feeding by herbivores. We examined feeding preferences of a generalist salt- marsh crab, Armases cinereum, for all the common angiosperms in its habitat. We took an experimental approach to evaluating the importance of toughness, secondary chemistry, silica, salt, and protein in determining feeding preferences. Consumption of plants by Armases in two experiments …

Alternative Splicing Of The Latency-Related Transcript Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Yields Rnas Containing Unique Open Reading Frames, Laxminarayana R. Devireddy, Clinton J. Jones Sep 1998

Alternative Splicing Of The Latency-Related Transcript Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Yields Rnas Containing Unique Open Reading Frames, Laxminarayana R. Devireddy, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The latency-related transcript (LRT) of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is the only abundant viral RNA detected during latency. A previous study (A. Hossain, L. M. Schang, and C. Jones, J. Virol. 69:5345–5352, 1995) concluded that splicing of polyadenylated [poly(A) +] and splicing of nonpolyadenylated [poly(A) -] LRT are different. In this study, splice junction sites of LRT were identified. In trigeminal ganglia of acutely infected calves (1, 7, or 15 days postinfection [p.i.]) or in latently infected calves (60 days p.i.), alternative splicing of poly(A) + LRT occurred. Productive viral gene expression in trigeminal ganglia is readily detected …

Cloning And Expression Of The Listeria Monocytogenes Scott A Ptsh And Ptsi Genes, Coding For Hpr And Enzyme I, Respectively, Of The Phosphotransferase System, Douglas P. Christensen, Andrew K. Benson, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP)-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) utilizes high-energy phosphate present in PEP to drive the uptake of several different carbohydrates in bacteria. In order to examine the role of the PTS in the physiology of Listeria monocytogenes, we identified the ptsH and ptsI genes encoding the HPr and enzyme I proteins, respectively, of the PTS. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that the predicted proteins are nearly 70% similar to HPr and enzyme I proteins from other organisms. Purified L. monocytogenes HPr overexpressed in Escherichia coli was also capable of complementing an HPr defect in heterologous extracts of Staphylococcus aureus ptsH …
