Interactions Between The Structural Domains Of The Rna Replication Proteins Of Plant-Infecting Rna Viruses, Erin K. O'Reilly, Zhaohui Wang, Roy C. French, C. Cheng Kao Sep 1998

Interactions Between The Structural Domains Of The Rna Replication Proteins Of Plant-Infecting Rna Viruses, Erin K. O'Reilly, Zhaohui Wang, Roy C. French, C. Cheng Kao

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Brome mosaic virus (BMV), a positive-strand RNA virus, encodes two replication proteins: the 2a protein, which contains polymerase-like sequences, and the 1a protein, with N-terminal putative capping and C-terminal helicase-like sequences. These two proteins are part of a multisubunit complex which is necessary for viral RNA replication. We have previously shown that the yeast two-hybrid assay consistently duplicated results obtained from in vivo RNA replication assays and biochemical assays of protein-protein interaction, thus permitting the identification of additional interacting domains. We now map an interaction found to take place between two 1a proteins. Using previously characterized 1a mutants, a perfect …

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple Sep 1998

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Faculty Publications

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Petrographic and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

Immunological Relationship Between The Class I Epitope Of Streptococcal M Protein And Myosin, Anthony Quinn, Kent Ward, Vincent A. Fischetti, Mark E. Hemric, Medeleine W. Cunningham Sep 1998

Immunological Relationship Between The Class I Epitope Of Streptococcal M Protein And Myosin, Anthony Quinn, Kent Ward, Vincent A. Fischetti, Mark E. Hemric, Medeleine W. Cunningham

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The class I epitope of streptococcal M protein is an epidemiological marker for acute rheumatic fever (ARF)-associated serotypes of group A streptococci and is recognized by anti-M protein monoclonal antibody (MAb) 10B6. Using MAb 10B6, we determined the relationship between the class I epitope of M protein and the a-helical coiled-coil protein myosin. MAb 10B6 reacted by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting with human cardiac myosin and rabbit skeletal myosin and its heavy meromyosin (HMM) subfragment. Overlapping synthetic peptides of M5 protein were used to identify the region of M5 protein recognized by MAb 10B6. Two C repeat peptides …

Hegel's Critique Of Kantian Practical Reason, Philip J. Kain Sep 1998

Hegel's Critique Of Kantian Practical Reason, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

While many philosophers have found Hegel's critique of Kantian ethics to be interesting in certain respects, overall most tend to find it rather shallow and to think that Hegel either misunderstands Kant's thought or has a rather crude understanding of it. For example, in examining the last two sections of Chapter V of the Phenomenology - 'Reason as Lawgiver' and 'Reason as Testing Laws' (where we get an extended critique of the categorical imperative)- Lauer finds Hegel's treatment to be truncated and inadequate.1 The only trouble, though, is that like most other readers of the Phenomenology, Lauer does not recognize …

Climate Change And Nebraska Sep 1998

Climate Change And Nebraska

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The earth's climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. The heat-trapping property of these greenhouse gases is undisputed. Although there is uncertainty about exactly how and when the earth's climate will respond to enhanced concentrations of greenhouse gases, observations indicate that detectable changes are under way. There most likely will be increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, soil moisture, and sea level, which could have adverse effects on many ecological systems, as well as on …

History, Opposition, And Salvation In Agarabi Adventism, George Westermark Sep 1998

History, Opposition, And Salvation In Agarabi Adventism, George Westermark

Pacific Studies

Growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church was particularly strong in the Papua New Guinea Eastern Highlands in the last decade. This article discusses a variety of reasons for this change, emphasizing Adventist beliefs that create a distinct historical consciousness among church members. In the face of a rapidly changing society, it is argued, these beliefs structure an appealing ideological framework that facilitates both individual and collective transformation. Significant for Eastern Highland Adventists is a doctrine of opposition toward other Christian groups and a sense of their own unique role in the prophetic events that make up their historical model.

Determinant Criteria In The Ocean Carrier Selection Process, R Stephen Parker, John L. Kent Sep 1998

Determinant Criteria In The Ocean Carrier Selection Process, R Stephen Parker, John L. Kent

Journal of Transportation Management

This study examines key determinant criteria used by import and export shippers when selecting an international containership carrier. A sample of import and export shippers were asked to evaluate eighteen service characteristics based on whether or not the characteristics were required by their international containership carriers. The results of Pearson chi-square tests indicate a significant difference between import shippers and export shippers on three of the eighteen service characteristics. Import shippers were more demanding of their carriers by requiring door-to-door transportation rates, shipment expediting, and shipment tracing services.

The Occurrence Of Learned Helplessness In Survivors Of Sudden Death Versus Survivors Of Non Sudden Death, Jennifer Doyce Wyatt Sep 1998

The Occurrence Of Learned Helplessness In Survivors Of Sudden Death Versus Survivors Of Non Sudden Death, Jennifer Doyce Wyatt

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of learned helplessness in survivors of sudden death versus survivors of non sudden death. Forty-six participants were volunteers from grief support groups. Participants were classified as survivors of sudden death or survivors of non sudden death. Sudden death was defined as death in which the re was no previous warning, such as an accident. Non sudden death was defined as death in which there was diagnosis or previous warning, such as cancer. Learned Helplessness was measured by the Learned Helplessness Scale. it was hypothesized that there will be a greater …

Condensing The Field: Internet Communication And Gestalt Community, Philip Brownell Sep 1998

Condensing The Field: Internet Communication And Gestalt Community, Philip Brownell

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This article examines the influence of internet communication on the Gestalt community from the standpoint of the field. Drawing on current internet sources, field theorists, and Gestalt therapists, the work describes the internet. explaining key field dynamics, and it concludes that the global community of Gestalt therapy is undergoing rapid change due to internet influence. That community is being enriched; it is becoming more aware of itself, and consequently its individual members are experiencing a professional camaraderie made more complex and more richly connected. At the same time, because of this increasing connectedness, it is also condensing. lnternet communication is …
