Burnout And Depression Among Roman Catholic Secular, Religious, And Monastic Clergy., Stephen Gerard Virginia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Burnout and depression among Roman Catholic secular, religious order, and monastic (Cistercian) priests was investigated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. Additionally, a Self-Report-Inventory was included (SRI) requesting information on demographics as well as four categories of predictor variables (vocational satisfaction, social support, spiritual activities, and physical environment) associated with burnout and depression. All participants were randomly selected from the National Catholic Director. The survey yielded a return rate of 90.67% with 63.11% completing the survey. The Effects Of Malpractice Pressure And Liability Reforms On Physicians’ Perceptions Of Medical Care, Daniel P. Kessler, Mark B. Mcclellan Jan 1997

The Effects Of Malpractice Pressure And Liability Reforms On Physicians’ Perceptions Of Medical Care, Daniel P. Kessler, Mark B. Mcclellan

Law and Contemporary Problems

Considerable evidence suggests that the medical malpractice liability system neither provides compensation to patients who suffer negligent medical injury nor seeks to penalize physicians whose negligence causes patient injury. The relationship between liability reforms, malpractice pressure and physician perceptions of medical care is examined.

Arbitration Agreements In Health Care: Myths And Reality, Elizabeth Rolph, Erik Moller, John E. Rolph

Law and Contemporary Problems

It is asserted that alternative dispute resolution methods, particularly mandatory binding arbitration agreements, have become the rule in health care delivery. A study was conducted to ascertain how widespread mandatory arbitration agreements between health plans and providers and their enrollees and patients really are, to assess how decisions regarding their use are made and to evaluate the prospects of their future use.

Adapting Mediation To Link Resolution Of Medical Malpractice Dispute With Health Care Quality Improvement, Edward A. Dauer, Leonard J. Marcus

Law and Contemporary Problems

... And Justice For All: Normative Descriptive Frameworks For The Implementation Of Tribunals To Try Human Rights Violators, Gautam Rana Jan 1997

... And Justice For All: Normative Descriptive Frameworks For The Implementation Of Tribunals To Try Human Rights Violators, Gautam Rana

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

With the formation of the Bosnian and Rwandan War Crimes Tribunals, the international community has created a mechanism for the enforcement of human rights law for the first time since the Nuremburg and Tokyo War Trials. The efficacy of these tribunals, however, is in doubt. This Note proposes that only a few human rights are truly universal in nature and can be guaranteed by the international community. Furthermore, the political realities of the international system precludes the use of international tribunals against the more powerful nations of the international community. The Note concludes that by focusing on the human rights …

South Africa's 1996 Choice On Termination Of Pregnancy Act, Audrey E. Haroz Jan 1997

South Africa's 1996 Choice On Termination Of Pregnancy Act, Audrey E. Haroz

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

South Africa's Bill of Rights is one of the most liberal and elaborate in the world. Consequently, South Africa is at the forefront of defining human rights for individuals, especially women. Concurrently, international law is slowly undergoing a reconceptualization of human rights documents and guarantees to define a more definitive, protective, and pro-active body of rights for women.

By upholding the constitutionality of the 1996 Abortion Act, South Africa can define its own Bill of Rights in liberal terms and ensure that the South African Constitution continues to receive a broad interpretation. A welcome result would be the improvement of …

World View: The 1997 Strategic Assessment From The Strategic Studies Institute, Earl H. Tilford Dr. Jan 1997

World View: The 1997 Strategic Assessment From The Strategic Studies Institute, Earl H. Tilford Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In December of each year the analysts at the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) look to the year ahead to assess the strategic equation for their particular areas of interest. This is part of an effort to focus our priorities both corporately as well as individually. As they address those issues and factors that will affect U.S. national security strategy over the next 12-18 months, our analysts are also forced to think about the next decade. The strategic context in 1997 will be quite similar to that of 1996 in that it remains complex and uncertain. This year, however, the way …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans Jan 1997

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Results of a primary meta-analysis indicated a significant main effect of the organizational behavior modification (O.B. Mod.) approach on task performance (d. = .51; a 17 percent increase) and a significant treatment-by-study interaction. To account for within-group heterogeneity of effect sizes, we conducted a two-level theory-driven moderator analysis by partitioning the sample of studies first into manufacturing and service groups and then into seven classes of reinforcement interventions. Results indicated a stronger average effect of O.B. Mod. in manufacturing organizations, moderation by the type of contingent interventions, and "pairwise" differences among average effect sizes in both organizational types. The practical …

The Shaping Force Of Corporate Law In The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon Jan 1997

The Shaping Force Of Corporate Law In The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon

University of Richmond Law Review

I am very grateful for the opportunity afforded by this Allen Chair lecture. I grew up in Richmond. During my formative years, between zero and two, my family lived in an apartment on Grace Street, and my mother would push me in the stroller around the block of Lombardy and Grace, where the T.C. Williams Law School was once located. Given all we know about psychology, it surely must be the case that the subliminal suggestion of legal studies at that crucial time accounts for my present occupation as a law professor.

The Use Of Facilitated Communication In Child Abuse Prosecutions, James Frederick Watson Jan 1997

The Use Of Facilitated Communication In Child Abuse Prosecutions, James Frederick Watson

University of Richmond Law Review

Before allowing a child who has alleged that he or she has been abused to testify at trial, a judge must be satisfied that the child is competent. In other words, the judge must find that the child has the ability to "observe, record, recollect and recount as well as an understanding of the duty to tell the truth." Determining whether children with certain developmental disorders are competent to testify has recently presented the courts with some difficult issues, as evidenced by a recent case in which the Supreme Court of Kansas upheld a conviction based primarily on the apparent …

The Supreme Court's "Exceedingly [Un]Persuasive" Application Of Intermediate Scrutiny In United States V. Virginia, Jeffrey A. Barnes Jan 1997

The Supreme Court's "Exceedingly [Un]Persuasive" Application Of Intermediate Scrutiny In United States V. Virginia, Jeffrey A. Barnes

University of Richmond Law Review

The Supreme Court's decision in the case of United States v. Virginia in June of 1996 was a landmark decision that could change how future courts approach and resolve gender-based equal protection claims. The Supreme Court held that the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) could no longer continue its male-only admissions policy as a state-funded institution of higher education. The Court's apparent heightening of the level of scrutiny applied to gender-based classifications from the previously used intermediate scrutiny to an ambiguous standard either somewhere between the traditional intermediate scrutiny and strict scrutiny, or, in effect, a standard equivalent to strict scrutiny, …
