Evaluation Of West Virginia Medicaid's Prior Authorization Policy For Anti-Ulcer Medications: Economic And Recipient Outcomes., Ambarish Jayant Ambegaonkar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Escalating drug costs and advent of managed care led WV Medicaid to implement the prior authorization policy for anti-ulcer medications (18% of 1994 expenditures). The study's purpose was to determine the policy's effect on utilization and expenditures of anti-ulcer medications and healthcare services such as inpatient hospitalizations, physician and outpatient hospital services (Phase I). The study also assessed the policy's effect on Medicaid recipient outcomes (Phase II). For Phase I, 36 months of Medicaid paid claims data (20 months pre-policy and 16 months post-policy) were analyzed for continuously eligible non-Medicare recipients. The policy's effects on utilization and expenditure time series …

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman Jan 1997

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Control is often a central concept in the explanation and treatment of physical spouse abuse. This study examined the usefulness of W. J. Doherty's and N. Colangelo's Family FIRO Model in explaining issues of control in physically aggressive couple relationships. The model is an adaptation of W. Schutz's Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation theory, which predicts the interpersonal fit in relationships from the satisfaction of the partners' intrapersonal inclusion, control, and affection needs. In further describing these needs, Doherty and colleagues place issues related to control in separate need areas, which could affect the initial focus of treatment. Thirty couples recruited …

The Tutorial Of Torture: Finding Out The Awful Truth In That Hideous Strength And 1984, John R. Reilly Jan 1997

The Tutorial Of Torture: Finding Out The Awful Truth In That Hideous Strength And 1984, John R. Reilly

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Contends That Hideous Strength and 1984 have the same theme, “that an objective view of morality is necessary for worthy human life.” Notes “similarities between the didactic devices which the authors employ,” such as Belbury/Oceania and Studdock/Winston, especially in their torture/ indoctrination. The biggest difference is in the resolution of both novels.

Male Adolescent Sex Offenders: The Relationship Between Early Victimization And Subsequent Offense Patterns., Mark Steven Metz Jan 1997

Male Adolescent Sex Offenders: The Relationship Between Early Victimization And Subsequent Offense Patterns., Mark Steven Metz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Twenty-three (23) incarcerated male adolescent sex offenders participated in structured interviews about their experiences as both victims and perpetrators of sexual assault. Data were analyzed for indications that some perpetrators use their offenses to reenact their victimization experiences in an effort to achieve mastery over their own sexual traumata. Data were also evaluated for evidence of differential victimization histories by molesters and rapists. Significant relationships were found between victimization and offense experiences, including the selection by offenders of victims who were the same race as the perpetrators against them, the recurrence in offenses of two types of sexual activity--simulated intercourse …

The History Of The Present Illness As Treatment: Who's Listening, And Why Does It Matter?, Herbert M. Adler, Md, Phd Jan 1997

The History Of The Present Illness As Treatment: Who's Listening, And Why Does It Matter?, Herbert M. Adler, Md, Phd

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The history of the present illness (HPI) is examined as a narrative communication that has the potential to be therapeutic.

METHODS: The general principles that influence the therapeutic potential of the HPI are induced from participant observation of personal experience and natural observations of conventional social interaction. These principles are corroborated by evidence from cross-cultural healing practices, clinical experience, and experimental psychology.

RESULTS: To facilitate a therapeutic HPI, the clinician should convey a sense of safety, sensitivity, affective competence, and cognitive competence. Furthermore, the effective clinician joins the patient in coprocessing the illness experience.

CONCLUSIONS: The (HPI) is not …

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne Jan 1997

A Family Portrait: Domestic Dynamics In The Fiction Of Mary Lavin, Lisa Lorraine Montagne

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mary Lavin (1912-1996) was fairly well-known in Ireland during her lifetime; however, there has been relatively little critical attention paid to her, especially in America, throughout her fifty-year career. This study focuses on the domestic dynamics of the family in Lavin's fiction, whose world is influenced by the more harsh realities of early twentieth-century Irish society: the Victorian expectations of traditional gender roles, a rigid social caste system, and, at times, misguided religion. It is the purpose of this study to explore whether Lavin's characters can find happiness and fulfillment by acting according to personal conscience within this closely-prescribed social …

A Field-Based Introduction To Urban Education At The Middle School, Susan M. Brookhart Jan 1997

A Field-Based Introduction To Urban Education At The Middle School, Susan M. Brookhart

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Middle school teachers developed objectives and suggested activities for a pilot early field experience to introduce freshman teacher candidates to urban education at the middle school level. This paper presents these objectives and activities plus data about the effects of their use by 15 teachers and 22 freshmen; an additional 30 freshmen placed in a traditional (tutoring) early field experience formed a comparison group. Project freshmen demonstrated higher sense of personal teaching efficacy and flexibility among people in a multicultural setting. In their journals, project freshmen reported more awareness of the urban environment; however, comparison group freshmen were more likely …

Explorations Of Preservice Teachers’ Learning Strategy Use, M. Kay Alderman, Loretta Wilkinson Jan 1997

Explorations Of Preservice Teachers’ Learning Strategy Use, M. Kay Alderman, Loretta Wilkinson

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The objectives were to identify learning strategy strengths and weaknesses of preservice teachers (n = 90) in an entry level educational psychology course that incorporated strategy instruction. Strategy use was assessed at the beginning and end of the course by the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), a diagnostic inventory of 10 scales. A comparison of mean percentiles with LASSI norms on all scales indicated need for remediation by students. The results indicated that learning strategy scores varied according to student GPA and final course grade. Implications for preservice teachers as learners and potential teachers of strategies were discussed.

Minds-On And Hands-On Activity: Improving Instruction In Science For All Students, Thomas Andre Jan 1997

Minds-On And Hands-On Activity: Improving Instruction In Science For All Students, Thomas Andre

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper briefly reviews evidence on gender inequities in science education. It argues that making science instruction more effective is one way in which greater equity can be achieved. A line of research conducted in my laboratory dealing with conceptual change (CC) approaches to science instruction is discussed. CC instruction explicitly activates students’ pre-existing conceptions, leads students to be dissatisfied with less than adequate conceptions, and helps students construct more effective conceptions. Across several studies, CC instruction was found to be more effective than didactic instruction. CC features added to science text and science lessons facilitate learning for both males …

Some Cautions Concerning Inferences About Proportions, Differences Between Proportions, And Quotients Of Proportions, Thomas R. Knapp, Hak P. Tam

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this article is to bring to the attention of the educational research community several cautions regarding the use of inferential statistics for single proportions, differences between proportions, and quotients of proportions. The user of such procedures is urged to pay particular attention to the selection of the appropriate formula for the standard error and to the assumption of the independence of the observations.

Shareholder Wealth Effects On Joint Venture Termination: A Transaction Cost Analysis, J. J. Reuer Jan 1997

Shareholder Wealth Effects On Joint Venture Termination: A Transaction Cost Analysis, J. J. Reuer

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Managing joint venture (JV transitions can have implications for parent firm performance as JVs become important, albeit temporary, instruments of firms' corporate and international strategies. This study examines the average shareholder wealth effects of five specific types of JV termination. Empirical evidence from U.S. firms terminating domestic and international JVs reveals venture termination neither positively nor negatively influences firm value on average, and no one type of JV termination is superior to its alternatives in general.

Measurement Of Perceived Environmental Uncertainties: Response And Extension, K. D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Miller (1993) presented an instrument for measuring managers' perceptions of the environmental uncertainties relevant to international business. Application of this instrument by Werner, Brouthers, and Brouthers (1996), led them to suggest an alternative measurement instrument. This study applies confirmatory factor analysis to examine the reliability and discriminant validity of these alternatives PEU scales.
