Corporate Welfare:If Business Location Incentives Do Not Work, Why Do Localities Continue To Offer Them?, Katja Hamel
Corporate Welfare:If Business Location Incentives Do Not Work, Why Do Localities Continue To Offer Them?, Katja Hamel
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
State and local governments provide a variety of inducements to persuade private industries to locate in their areas. Corporate welfare takes the form of property and sales tax abatements or exemptions, low interest loans, grants, utility credits, and other financial incentives given to companies by states and localities with the expectation that these companies will bring with them more jobs and increased revenue for the residents of those communities. Because these programs are largely promise- based rather than performance based, they often fail to meet expectations. Despite the overall inefficiencies of business location incentives, other factors assure their continued use.

Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Neurons Are Glucose Sensitive, Adam C. Hall, Roselle M. Hoffmaster, Edra L. Stern, Mary E. Harrington, David Bickar
Chemistry: Faculty Publications
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus serves as the pacemaker for mammalian circadian rhythms. In a hamster brain slice preparation, the authors were able to record spontaneous activity from SCN cells for up to 4 days in vitro and verify a self-sustained rhythm in firing. The phase of this rhythm was altered by the concentration of glucose in the bathing medium, with time of peak firing advanced for a 20 mM glucose condition and slightly delayed for a 5 mM glucose condition, relative to 10 mM. The advancing effect of 20 mM glucose and the delaying effect of 5 …
Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill
Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Cheyenne Autumn is an unflinching historical portrait of a people confronting physical extermination and cultural annihilation at the hands of duplicitous government forces. This work is structurally a chapter-by-chapter chronicle of a Cheyenne outbreak starting in Oklahoma and ending in the surrender of Little Wolf and his followers hundreds of miles and six months later in Montana. The northern Cheyennes of the Yellowstone region are promised land, food, and protection in treaties signed by the U.S. Government. These agreements, however, are repeatedly and brutally broken by the government.
Hundreds of northern Cheyennes agree, under government coercion, to removal to Oklahoma …

Participants: Adults with spinal cord injury living independently in a community setting (n = 73). Main Outcome Measures: Sense of Coherence, the Centers for Epidemiological Studies of Depression Scale, the Hope Scale, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Inventory and the Life Satisfaction Scale. Voluntary Control Of Penile Tumescence While Receiving Both Cognitive And Physical Stimulation., Todd M. Carpenter
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Voluntary control of erectile responses represents a serious threat to the validity of phallometry( or penile plethysmography).Cognitive methods, such as not attending to the sexual stimuli or distraction through the use of fantasy, may be used effectively to distort phallometric measures. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the degree of control men have over their sexual arousal while receiving both cognitive and vibrotactile stimulation.More specifically, this study examined the ability of males to suppress penile tumescence to preferred sexual stimuli as well as their ability to enhance tumuscence to nonpreferred and neutral stimuli.Participants were randomly assigned to view one of three …

Client And Counselor Learning Style And Its Effect On Client Perceptions, Wendy Jo Hunsucker
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was an investigation of the effect of client and counselor learning style congruence, similarity, and incongruence on how the client perceives the counselor with regard to expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness. The effect of taking the measure at two points in time during the counseling process was also examined. Participants were 90 clients and 14 counselors from the student counseling centers of midwestern universities. A total of 30 client-counselor dyads was utilized in each of the following groups: Group 1 (congruent learning styles), Group 2 (similar learning styles), and Group 3 (incongruent learning styles). Client participants rated their perceptions …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study investigated the concerns and perceptions of parents of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD). Parental concerns regarding behaviors, skill deficits, and settings were identified as well as the helpfulness of interventions and professionals. The Parent Perception Opinionnaire for Parents of Children and Adolescents with ADHD was constructed. Data were collected from 112 members of a parent support group. The data were summarized according to ages 8 and less (primary), ages 9 through 11 (intermediate) and ages 12 through 17 (secondary). The highest ranked concerns of parents were symptoms of inattention, distractibility and hyperactivity. Regarding skills deficits, highest concerns …
Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski
Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral and mental health approaches to consultation differ in theoretical foundation, interpersonal interaction style of the consultant, and identified source of problem assessment, interventions, and decision-making. These consultation approaches may yield different levels of consultation effectiveness. Studies conducted to date have not consistently found differences between these approaches in terms of consultation effectiveness. However, there have been methodological flaws in these studies. In order to determine if either approach yields better outcomes, a means of assessing consultation orientation (i.e., the theoretical approach endorsed by a psychologist) must be developed. The School-based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale (SCORS) was designed to measure …

Personality And Cognitive Characteristics Of Students In Science And Engineering, Scott Duncan
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was a longitudinal investigation into the relationship of personality and cognitive variables to persistence and success behaviors at a technological institute. Personality was assessed with the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Cognitive measures were the Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA). The sample included the entire class (N = 354) matriculated in the Fall of 1990 at a private technical institute. Multiple regressions, discriminant analyses, and cluster analyses were utilized to test five hypotheses. Dependent variables were: grade point average, persistence to degree in a regular curriculum, and persistence …

The Relationship Of Womanist Identity Attitudes To Age, Life Events, And View Of Women's Roles, Ingrid Karen Toews
The Relationship Of Womanist Identity Attitudes To Age, Life Events, And View Of Women's Roles, Ingrid Karen Toews
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Similar to minority groups, women often possess inferiority feelings about themselves and have difficulty developing a positive view of womanhood. Womanist Identity Development is the stage-wise process by which women develop womanist attitudes, forming a positive gender identity. The stages are associated with specific attitudes about womanhood, including external negative definitions (i.e. societal stereotypes) and positive internal definitions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not womanist identity attitudes vary according to age and whether or not attitudes are related to views of women's roles and life experiences. The sample consisted of fifty-two participants ages 20 to …

The focus of this study wag to determine if women who report and women who do not report sexual harassment could be differentially described by a subset of the following variables: age, marital status, feminist ideology, frequency of behavior, perceived offensiveness, perceived outcomes, normative expectations. This study was based on a model for reporting sexual harassment by Brooks and Perot (1991) and extended the original test of this model by adding two variables, normative expectations and perceived outcomes, which were not tested by Brooks and Perot.
