The United States And Russia Into The 21st Century, R. Craig Nation Dr., Michael Mcfaul Dr. Oct 1997

The United States And Russia Into The 21st Century, R. Craig Nation Dr., Michael Mcfaul Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In late April 1997, the U.S. Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute hosted its Eighth Annual Strategy Conference. The topic for this year's conference was Russia's Future as a World Power. The concluding panel for this conference, The United States and Russia into the 21st Century, included the following two papers. In the first essay, Beyond the Cold War: Change and Continuity in U.S.-Russian Relations, Dr. R. Craig Nation argues that, for the United States, the primary challenge is to adjust to a post-Cold War world where it is difficult to justify traditional exercises of power in the absence of …

The Effects Of Divorce And Custody Arrangements On Children’S Behavior, Development, And Adjustment, Michael E. Lamb, Kathleen J. Sternberg, Ross A. Thompson Oct 1997

The Effects Of Divorce And Custody Arrangements On Children’S Behavior, Development, And Adjustment, Michael E. Lamb, Kathleen J. Sternberg, Ross A. Thompson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article summarizes the consensus among a group of experts from developmental and clinical psychology, sociology, social welfare, and law who sought to evaluate existing empirical evidence regarding the ways in which children are affected by divorce and the varying custody arrangements that follow it. Divorce and/or single parenthood tend to have adverse effects on children’s adjustment, with the magnitude of the effects varying depending on the psychological status of the two parents, the extent of conflict between them, and the financial circumstances, particularly after divorce. Children whose nonresidential parents continue to support them financially, those whose custodial parents are …

The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C. Oct 1997

The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C.

Vincentian Studies

According to Dorothy MacDougall, “the charism of charity has transcended centuries and cultures to the extent that our foundresses and Community members and lay associates have been willing to break through biases of culture to reveal God’s love to the world.” The charism requires “inclusivity, imagination, and risk.” She offers examples from the history of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky that illustrate this. For instance, the Sisters removed segregation from their hospitals before the Civil Rights era. They also opened a hospital specifically for African Americans because they were not properly served or not comfortable going elsewhere; …

Relationships: Gift For Elizabeth, Gift For Us, Vie Thorgren Oct 1997

Relationships: Gift For Elizabeth, Gift For Us, Vie Thorgren

Vincentian Studies

Vie Thorgren identifies three “gifts of relationship” in Elizabeth Seton’s life that empowered her and others around her. She explains how these are relevant to us and how they are “helpful for an understanding of charity that embraces justice.” First, Thorgren explores Elizabeth’s relationship with her father, and with God by extension, and how both gave her the first gift, “the authority of the Father’s Daughter.” In Jungian psychology, the Father’s Daughter is a woman who is practical, adaptable, and capable of gaining others’ trust. As a Father’s Daughter, Elizabeth knew the difference between authority and control. Authority is legitimate …

Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton And The Art Of Embodied Presence, Wendy M. Wright Oct 1997

Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton And The Art Of Embodied Presence, Wendy M. Wright

Vincentian Studies

Unlike many saints who saw human relationships as distractions from spiritual life, Elizabeth Seton serves as a model for pursuing and sustaining intimate relationships of all kinds. Her life shows us that “the capacity for loving intimacy, with both other people and with God, is in itself a spiritual path.” For her, relationships with family and friends were intertwined with her relationship with God. Catholicism’s belief in the Real Presence was particularly attractive to her. As she lost various human presences in her life, she found the divine presence, the basis of her faith, and she always sought to be …

Participation Run Amok: The Costs Of Mass Participation For Deliberative Agency Decisionmaking, Jim A. Rossi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article addresses the implications of broad-based participatory reforms for administrative process, with a particular focus on how participation reveals itself in different political-theoretic models of agency governance. The first section of the Article explores participation's value to agency governance. The second section of the Article presents three models of agency governance - expertocratic, pluralist, and civic republican - and discusses participation's importance to each model. The Article then posits a distinction between ordinary and constitutive agency decision-making, and explores how participation affects each for the three distinct models of agency governance. The implications of mass participation are explored in …

How Effective A Tool Is Student Community Service, Martha Naomi Alt Oct 1997

How Effective A Tool Is Student Community Service, Martha Naomi Alt

Service Learning, General

Despite the popular appeal among the public, educators, parents, and even students for community service, there is surprisingly little firm evidence that students who engage in service learn more, develop in different ways, or learn different skills than those who do not. What are the implications for policy, further research, and school practice?

Kierkegaard At Babette's Feast: The Return To The Finite, Jean Schuler Oct 1997

Kierkegaard At Babette's Feast: The Return To The Finite, Jean Schuler

Journal of Religion & Film

Babette's Feast achieves what Kierkegaard treated as impossible: to make the hidden movements of faith visible. A film about goodness threatens to bore its audience; a film about holiness that manages to get it right would seem to be as impossible as roses blooming in December or sitting down to a banquet fit for kings in a Jutland cottage. The usual ways of analyzing character and plot don't size up the elderly sisters who move with such grace through the quiet grays and browns of the village. A modern critic might insist: these daughters were controlled by a powerful father …

To Commend Or To Critique? The Question Of Religion And Film Studies, John C. Lyden Oct 1997

To Commend Or To Critique? The Question Of Religion And Film Studies, John C. Lyden

Journal of Religion & Film

This paper examines two approaches to popular film to come out of religious studies. The first assumes popular culture is as valid as any culture, in which case "religious" analysis of films seeks to identify the iconography and mythology of film as expressive of a viable popular religion. The second method critiques popular film as a form of hegemonic discourse to be unmasked as supportive of classist, racist, and sexist ideologies. This paper accepts the validity of both methods and seeks to balance them by asserting that all films should be seen both as viable expressions of culture and also …

Sexual Attraction Toward Clients, Use Of Supervision, And Prior Training: A Qualitative Study Of Predoctoral Psychology Interns, Nicholas Ladany, Karen M. O'Brien, Clara E. Hill, Deborah S. Melincoff, Sarah Knox, David A. Peterson Oct 1997

Sexual Attraction Toward Clients, Use Of Supervision, And Prior Training: A Qualitative Study Of Predoctoral Psychology Interns, Nicholas Ladany, Karen M. O'Brien, Clara E. Hill, Deborah S. Melincoff, Sarah Knox, David A. Peterson

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Interviews were conducted with 13 predoctoral psychology interns about an experience of sexual attraction toward a client, use of supervision to address the sexual attraction, and prior training regarding sexual attraction. Results indicated that sexual attraction to clients consisted of physical and interpersonal aspects. Therapists believed they were more invested and attentive than usual to clients to whom they were sexually attracted, and they indicated that sexual attraction created distance, distraction, and loss of objectivity. In terms of supervision, only half of the participants disclosed their sexual attraction to supervisors, and supervisors seldom initiated the discussion. Furthermore, trainees found it …

Eisenhower And Khrushchev At The Paris Summit: Anatomy Of A Failure, Vincent Michael Kapral Oct 1997

Eisenhower And Khrushchev At The Paris Summit: Anatomy Of A Failure, Vincent Michael Kapral

History Theses & Dissertations

Although it seemed at the time that the destruction of a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft over Soviet territory, slightly over two weeks prior to the Four-Power May 1960 Paris Conference had ended the summit, more deeply rooted historical differences ensured the meeting's failure. While President Dwight Eisenhower sought to ensure a national policy of defense sufficiency via his New Look strategy, he faced many internal and external critics who over-stepped or underutilized their positions. These included Allen Dulles, Christian Herter, Richard Bissell and Charles De Gaulle. Nikita Khrushchev faced internal division over his desires to achieve a new peaceful coexistence as …

Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette Oct 1997

Developing A Child Advocacy Law Clinic: A Law School Clinical Legal Education Opportunity, Donald N. Duquette

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Clinical legal education has become an accepted and integral complement to traditional law school curricula. Professor Duquette argues that clinical education is uniquely able to integrate the teaching of practical skills and legal doctrine, elevating students' understanding of both. Duquette maintains that a child advocacy law clinic can teach a broad range of practical skill benefit the hosting law school by providing an opportunity for interdisciplinary education as well as a public relations benefit, while simultaneously serving an important need in most communities for quality representation of all parties in child abuse and neglect cases. Most importantly, participation in a …

The Effects Of Teaching Two Syllable Types And One Syllabication Rule On The Spelling Achievement Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracey Ellen Taylor Oct 1997

The Effects Of Teaching Two Syllable Types And One Syllabication Rule On The Spelling Achievement Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracey Ellen Taylor

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching two syllable types and one syllabication rule in a reading program would affect the spelling achievement of students with learning disabilities. Seven fifth-grade students with learning disabilities from western-lower Michigan participated in this study. The intervention involved teaching the closed syllable and silent-e syllable in conjunction with the VC/CV syllabication rule. During the closed syllable phase and the silent-e phase, the students were given a ten word spelling test on Monday of each week. To determine spelling achievement, the students were evaluated for both word accuracy and syllable accuracy. The …

Is The Educational Level Of Technology Coordinators Aligned With International Standards?, Keith Alan Platte Oct 1997

Is The Educational Level Of Technology Coordinators Aligned With International Standards?, Keith Alan Platte

Masters Theses

School districts that employ technology coordinators have not fully implemented standards set by the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) for technology coordinators. This research examines the role of the technology coordinator, the ISTE standards for technology coordinators, graduate programs available to technology coordinators, and job descriptions of technology coordinators. This research also includes the results of a self-assessment survey of technology coordinators in southwest Michigan. The average proficiency of technology coordinators on select ISTE benchmarks is 2.54 on a 3.0 scale (3.0 is proficient). However, their proficiency level is considerably lower when most of their skills are attained …
