Honesty, Privacy, And Shame: When Gay People Talk About Other Gay People To Nongay People, David L. Chambers, Steven K. Homer

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

There is a longstanding convention among lesbians and gay men in the United States: Do not reveal the sexuality of a gay person to a heterosexual person; unless you are certain that the gay person does not regard his sexuality as a secret. Lie if necessary to protect her secret. Violating the convention by "outing" another person is widely considered a serious social sin.

Three-Body Models Of Electron-Hydrogen Ionization, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison, Dmitry A. Konovalov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we report calculations of electron-hydrogen ionization whereby the final-state wave Function is approximated by recently reported analytical three-body wave functions. In a first model we use the wave function of Alt and Mukhamedzhanov [Phys. Rev. A 47, 2004 (1993)], and in a second model we use the wave function of Berakdar [Phys. Rev. A 53, 2314 (1996)].

Scaling Parallels In The Non-Debye Dielectric Relaxation Of Ionic Glasses And Dipolar Supercooled Liquids, David L. Sidebottom, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow Jan 1997

Scaling Parallels In The Non-Debye Dielectric Relaxation Of Ionic Glasses And Dipolar Supercooled Liquids, David L. Sidebottom, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compare the dielectric response of ionic glasses and dipolar liquids near the glass transition. Our work is divided into two parts. In the first section we examine ionic glasses and the two prominent approaches to analyzing the dielectric response. The conductivity of ion-conducting glasses displays a power law dispersion σ(ω)∞ωn, where n≈0.67, but frequently the dielectric response is analyzed using the electrical modulus M*(ω) = 1/ε*(ω), where ε*(ω) = ε(ω) - iσ(ω)/ω is the complex permittivity. We reexamine two specific examples where the shape of M*(ω) changes in response to changes in (a) temperature and (b) ion concentration, to …

Chemical Durability Of Lead-Oxide-Based, Thick-Film Binder Glasses, Douglas M. Mattox, Joshua H. Robinson Jan 1997

Chemical Durability Of Lead-Oxide-Based, Thick-Film Binder Glasses, Douglas M. Mattox, Joshua H. Robinson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lead-oxide-bearing glasses are incompatible with aluminum nitride metallization's, and federal legislation is recommending their replacement in thick-film electronics and labeling. To evaluate alternatives, the benchmark chemical durability's of the lead borosilicate and lead aluminate thick-film binder glasses have been determined. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) benefits water durability moderately, acid durability substantially, and basic durability indistinguishably. The rate of attack in water is approximately two orders of magnitude greater than for soda-lime glass. The thermal contractions of the glasses are compatible. An apparent, spontaneous phase separation in the Al2O3-free glass is suppressed by Al2O3 that is included as a batch component.

Aircraft-based measurements of sulfur dioxide, acetone, carbon dioxide, and condensation nuclei (CN) were made over the north-eastern Atlantic at upper tropospheric altitudes, around 9000 m. On October 14, 1993, strong SO 2- and acetone-pollution (both up to 3 ppbv) were observed, which were accompanied by a CO 2-enhancement of up to 6 ppmv, and large CN-concentrations of up to about 1500 cm -3 (for radii ≥ 6 nm). CN, excess CO 2, and to a lesser degree also acetone, were positively correlated with SO 2. Air mass trajectory analyses indicate, that most of the air masses …

Oxygen-Dependent Metabolism Of Organic Xenobiotics In Marine Fish And Mussel, Laurence David Peters Jan 1997

Oxygen-Dependent Metabolism Of Organic Xenobiotics In Marine Fish And Mussel, Laurence David Peters

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies were undertaken to examine the processes of oxygen-dependent organic xenobiotic metabolism in fish and mussel. The antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1 ), catalase (EC 1.11.1.6), selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (SeGPX; EC 1.11.1.9) glutathione reducate (EC 1.6.4.2), DT Diaphorase (quinone oxidoreductase; EC 1.6.99.2), total GPX activity (sum of SeGPX and Se-independent GPX activities) and levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) were determined in 13 500g supernatants of embryos, 3- day and 11-day post-hatch larvae of turbot Scophthalmus maximus. The early life stages of S. maximus demonstrated the potential to detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS), organic peroxides and redox cycling compounds. The …

Ecophysiology Of Neomysis Integer (Mysidacea: Peracarida), Stephen Derek Roast Jan 1997

Ecophysiology Of Neomysis Integer (Mysidacea: Peracarida), Stephen Derek Roast

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Neomysis integer (Leach) (Peracarida: Mysidacea) is a common component of the hyperbenthos of Western European estuaries, and this study focused on the ecophysiology and ecotoxicology of this mysid. Behavioural and physiological responses of N. integer to physical and chemical variables (current velocity, substratum type, temperature and salinity) were measured in the laboratory to gain better understanding of how this mysid maintains position in estuaries. Current velocity was the most important factor controlling position maintenance, and N. integer had a maximum swimming speed of c. 9cm sˉ¹. Position maintenance was facilitated by a muddy substratum and was not affected by salinity. …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single and double ionization of helium by 1 GeV/nucleon U92+ impact was explored in a kinematically complete experiment. The relativistic ion generates a subattosecond (10−18s) superintense (I > 1019W/cm2) electromagnetic pulse, which is interpreted as a field of equivalent photons (Weizsäcker-Williams method). Cross sections, the emission characteristics of ions and electrons as well as momentum balances, are quantitatively discussed in terms of photoionization of the atom in this broadband, ultrashort virtual photon field. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

Complete Momentum Balance For Single Ionization Of Helium By Fast Ion Impact: Experiment, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich, H. Kollmus, W. Schmitt, M. Unverzagt, H. Schmidt-Böcking, C. J. Wood, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The collision dynamics of He single ionization by [Formula Presented] impact was explored using the reaction microscope of the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, a high-resolution integrated multielectron recoil-ion momentum spectrometer. The complete three-particle final-state momentum distribution (nine Cartesian components [Formula Presented]) was imaged with a resolution of [Formula Presented] by measuring the three momentum components of the emitted electron and the recoiling target ion in coincidence. The projectile energy loss has been determined on a level of [Formula Presented] and projectile scattering angles as small as [Formula Presented] became accessible. The experimental data which are compared with results of classical trajectory …

Projectile Charge-State Dependence On Final-State Momentum Distributions For Single Ionization Of Helium, C. J. Wood, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single-ionization cross sections and final-state momentum distributions have been calculated for the single-ionization collision reactions H[Formula Presented], [Formula Presented], He[Formula Presented], C[Formula Presented], and C[Formula Presented] + He at 100 keV/u. The classical trajectory Monte Carlo method has been used with a Wigner distribution to improve both the He electron classical radial and momentum distributions. Final-state ionized electron momenta are projected into a collision plane defined by the initial projectile momentum and the final transverse component of the He[Formula Presented] recoil momentum, with the results displayed differentially in various components of electron and recoil momenta. Positively charged projectile impact shows …

The Interaction Of Fast Alpha Particles With Pellet Ablation Clouds, J. M. Mcchesney, P. B. Parks, R. K. Fisher, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1997

The Interaction Of Fast Alpha Particles With Pellet Ablation Clouds, J. M. Mcchesney, P. B. Parks, R. K. Fisher, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The energy spectra of energetic confined alpha particles are being measured using the pellet charge exchange method [R. K. Fisher, J. S. Leffler, A. M. Howald, and P. B. Parks, Fusion Technol. 13, 536 (1988)]. The technique uses the dense ablation cloud surrounding an injected impurity pellet to neutralize a fraction of the incident alpha particles, allowing them to escape from the plasma where their energy spectrum can be measured using a neutral particle analyzer. The signal calculations given in the above-mentioned reference disregarded the effects of the alpha particles' helical Larmor orbits, which causes the alphas to make multiple …

Walking Thoughts, Hunter R. Rawlings Iii Jan 1997

Walking Thoughts, Hunter R. Rawlings Iii

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

I've borrowed my title from a poem by Marvin Bell, a member of our Writers' Workshop, because I cannot think of state parks without thinking of my love for their hiking trails and the expansion of spirit they have brought me. State parks are more than nature preserves, more than recreational areas, though these functions are very important. They are also cultural and even spiritual resources, centers of emotional and psychic renewal.

Classroom 'Role-Playing': Performance Approaches To Characterization, Gerald Lee Ratliff Jan 1997

Classroom 'Role-Playing': Performance Approaches To Characterization, Gerald Lee Ratliff

Iowa Journal of Communication

Successful classroom role-playing that promotes imaginative performance approaches to characterization initially depend upon a student performer's ability to analyze literature to determine what the author has suggested about character actions and events; and a student performer's ability to cultivate critical skills of analysis and interpretation that ultimately give voice and body to a representative character portrait in classroom performance. Careful analysis of the selected literature includes reading with a critical eye, isolating mental symbols that clearly define character intention or motivation, and a classroom performance blueprint that encourages creative self-expression and exploration of role-playing strategies and techniques. The creative extent …
