Velocity Space "Snapshots" Of Continuum Electrons Produced By Slow, Bare, Highly Charged Ions: Saddle-Point Electrons?, M. Abdallah, S. Kravis, C. L. Cocke, Y. D. Wang, M. Stöckli, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1997

Velocity Space "Snapshots" Of Continuum Electrons Produced By Slow, Bare, Highly Charged Ions: Saddle-Point Electrons?, M. Abdallah, S. Kravis, C. L. Cocke, Y. D. Wang, M. Stöckli, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Comprehensive velocity-space "snapshots" of the electron continua produced by the impact of ions on He at a projectile velocity of 1.63 a.u. have been measured for the bare projectiles of p, He, C, O and Ne. For the three highly charged ions, this velocity lies in the "ionization threshold" region where electron capture dominates the reaction. The experimental technique projects the distribution of soft continuum electrons onto a two-dimensional detector in such a way that the velocity-space distribution for all electrons with laboratory energies in the range from 0-30eV is accurately imaged. The data show no evidence for a saddle-point …

Momentum Spectra For Single And Double Electron Ionization Of He In Relativistic Collisions, C. J. Wood, Ronald E. Olson, W. Schmitt, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich Jan 1997

Momentum Spectra For Single And Double Electron Ionization Of He In Relativistic Collisions, C. J. Wood, Ronald E. Olson, W. Schmitt, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The complete momentum spectra for single and double ionization of He by [Formula Presented] [Formula Presented] [Formula Presented] have been investigated using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo method corrected for the relativistic projectile. The [Formula Presented] electron-electron interaction has been included in the post-collision region for double ionization to incorporate the effects of both the nuclear-electron and electron-electron ionizing interactions, and to access the effects of electron correlation in the electron spectra. Experimental measurements were able to determine the longitudinal momentum spectra for single ionization; these observations are in accordance with the theoretical predictions for the three-body momentum balance between …

The Opening Price Behavior: Foreign Exchange Futures Market Versus Equity Market, Quentin C. Chu, David K. Ding, C. S. Pyun Jan 1997

The Opening Price Behavior: Foreign Exchange Futures Market Versus Equity Market, Quentin C. Chu, David K. Ding, C. S. Pyun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Daily opening, noon, and closing prices of Deutschemark and Japanese yen futures are examined for the efficiency of the foreign exchange futures (FXF) market. Variance ratio and multiple variance ratio tests, are employed. The prices are found to be serially uncorrelated. This random walk behavior sheds light on the differences between the FXF and commodity or equity markets. The conclusions suggest that the FXF market is a 24-hour global market, reflecting a disparity with equity markets where round-the-clock trading is advocated since the high volatility during market opening would be eliminated, leading to potential cost reductions for traders as spreads …

Imminency And Restorationism In Early Christianity, Timothy E. Crosby Jan 1997

Imminency And Restorationism In Early Christianity, Timothy E. Crosby

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The problem of the delay of the Parousia is one of the central problems of the Christian faith. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church it usually takes the form of a short delay (100+ years), whereas among New Testament scholars it takes the form of a long delay (1900+ years). This study seeks to shed light on the problem as perceived by New Testament scholars.

Method

In order to delve deeply into the meaning of a handful of cruxes in the New Testament having to do with the imminence of the Parousia, the study attempted to examine all of the …

Evaluation Of Rainbows, A Program Designed To Assist Bereaved Children In The Grieving Process, Caroline G. O'Shannassy

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There are many children who have suffered the loss of a parent through death or divorce/separation. Generally, people expect children to "carry on" while such traumatic events in their lives take place. Bereaved parents may send their children back to school as soon as possible after the death. In the case of divorce/ separation, the child attends school while the trauma unfolds on a day-to- day basis. Bereaved and distressed parents are often unaware of their children's grief and unable to give the support that the children need. Parents are likely to deny, on many occasions, that the children have …

Australia As Other In Singapore's Media, Lai W. Woo Jan 1997

Australia As Other In Singapore's Media, Lai W. Woo

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Since the late eighteenth century, the Western observation of the East has been based on shared ontological and epistemological assumptions made by the West of the East as different and as the "Other''. Said's concept of Orientalism revolutionized Western understanding of non-Western cultures by showing how Western projected images shaped the Occidental view of the Orient. Although much has been written about the West's perception of the East as "Other'' (Eg. Said and Schirato), to date, little has been written dealing with the West from, the "Eastern" viewpoint. This thesis will examine the concepts of Orientalism (the perception of the …

Junior High School Students' Perception Of The Messages Conveyed Through The Lyrics Of Rock Music, Steven M. Russey Jan 1997

Junior High School Students' Perception Of The Messages Conveyed Through The Lyrics Of Rock Music, Steven M. Russey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not the accompaniment of a lyric sheet while listening to rock music would aid a student's correct identification of the message conveyed by that song. Participants included one 7th and one 8th grade class of "gifted" students (N = 62). Other elements examined involved students' judgment of the messages as negative or positive, as well as the tonality of each song as pleasant or unpleasant and how these judgments related to correct or incorrect identification of the messages. Results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference regarding correct or …

Patenting Medical Procedures: A Search For A Compromise Between Ethics And Economics, Beata Gocyk-Farber Jan 1997

Patenting Medical Procedures: A Search For A Compromise Between Ethics And Economics, Beata Gocyk-Farber

Cardozo Law Review

When doctor Samuel Pallin, an Arizona ophthalmologist, brought an infringement suit for his patent covering the "stitchless" incision in cataract surgery, he probably did not expect that he would provoke one of the most emotional patent debates in history. Physicians across the country expressed condemnation of medical process patents, calling such patents "horrendous" and warning that Dr. Pallin's victory may have "profoundly devastating and mind-boggling consequences" for medical science. The resonance in the medical community was so strong that the American Medical Association House of Delegates passed a resolution "vigorously" condemning the patenting of medical and surgical procedures and promising …

As a result of undertaking this study, the researcher hopes to be able to draw conclusions about the practical relevance to small manufacturing firms of the marketing planning concepts set out in marketing literature by writers such as Kotler, McCarthy, MacDonald, Stapelton and others.

This study examines marketing planning in small Manufacturing firms - SMFs - in the Irish Counties of Cork and Kerry.

The essential aims of this study are to try to determine:

(1) How marketing planning is carried out by companies in the target group;

(2) Contrast marketing planning practice among the target population with recommendations for …

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In New World Passerines, Tyler A. Sager '97 Jan 1997

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In New World Passerines, Tyler A. Sager '97

Honors Projects

Organochlorine pesticide contaminants detrimentally affect wildlife in many ways, including lowered reproductive success, endocrine disruption, and embryonic defects. Most organochlorine pesticides have been banned in the United States after the recognition of these effects. However, these pesticides are still used in Central and South America, and little information is available concerning the levels of pesticide contamination in wildlife from these areas. Furthermore, little data exist regarding organochlorine pesticide contamination in passerines (songbirds). The purpose of this study was to determine the presence in passerines of organochlorine pesticides that are of concern to the Environmental Protection Agency. Neotropical resident species (i.e. …

Substance Abuse At Ucc Drafting Sessions, Norman I. Silber Jan 1997

Substance Abuse At Ucc Drafting Sessions, Norman I. Silber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A few substance abusers start down the road to addiction with a single reckless experiment. Such was the case of Professor "Doe", a consumer law specialist of my acquaintance. The entanglement of Professor Doe in the UCC drafting process began when he accepted what seemed like the harmless invitation of a friend to attend a single National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws ("NCCUSL") drafting session in1990. Session after session followed. Soon he found himself in a descending spiral-attending study groups, legislative task forces, and conference programs being held in strange cities to debate a new or revised provision …

Tacit Acceptance And Watchful Eyes: Beijing's Views About The U.S.-Rok Alliance, Fei-Ling Wang Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In October 1995, the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute and the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University, in partnership with the Defense Nuclear Agency and The Korea Society, hosted in Seoul, Korea, an international workshop on the U.S.-ROK Alliance. For nearly a half century, the security alliance between the ROK and the United States has deterred aggression, helped assure stability in Northeast Asia, and supported the ROK's political and economic emergence as one of the advanced democratic industrial countries of the world.

In this monograph, Professor Wang Fei-ling examines the future of the alliance from China's perspective. …
