Biosystematics Of The Cotesia Flavipes Species Complex (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): Morphometrics Of Selected Allopatric Populations, Susan W. Kimani-Njogu, William A. Overholt, James Woolley, Annette Walker

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Morphometric studies of allopatric populations of the Cotesia fiavipes species complex representing three putative species; C. flavipes Cameron, C. sesamiae (Cameron) and C. chilonis (Matsumura), were conducted. Sixteen characters were measured. Principal component analysis separated the complex into three somewhat overlapping groups that corresponded well with previous concepts of the species. Canonical variate analysis separated the complex into three distinct clusters with populations from Africa together, populations from Asia and the Neotropics forming a second cluster, and material from China and Japan forming a third cluster. The Mahalanobis squared distances between the three clusters were nearly equal. Results support recognition …

Foraging Behavior And Life History Of The Stemborer Parasitoid Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), R. P.J. Potting, W. A. Overholt, F. O. Danso, K. Takasu Jan 1997

Foraging Behavior And Life History Of The Stemborer Parasitoid Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), R. P.J. Potting, W. A. Overholt, F. O. Danso, K. Takasu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The gregarious parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) attacks larvae of pyralid and noctuid stemborers by entering the stemborer tunnel. The short-range foraging behavior of female C. flavipes was studied on stemborer-infested plants, in patches with host-related products and in artificial transparent tunnels. In addition, the longevity under specific conditions and the potential and realized fecundity of female C. flavipes were determined. Larval frass, caterpillar regurgitate, and holes in the stem are used in host location by C. flavipes. The response to host products by C. flavipes seems not to be host species specific. Female C. flavipes respond to frass from …

Common Ground: Perspectives On Latino-Latina Diversity, Ediberto Román Jan 1997

Common Ground: Perspectives On Latino-Latina Diversity, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

In academic circles, when one speaks of scholarship, one speaks of scholarly legal publications. While such writing is obviously important for reform as well as for professional self-preservation,, I would take the term scholarship a step further. As true students of the law, we have a status in society that gives us a forum, and as Latinos/as we have an obligation to use our status to affect our communities. I, therefore, strongly support becoming more active by getting our voices heard beyond traditional modes of legal discourse. There are scores of communication mediums, such as newspapers and non-legal journals whose …

Identity Notes Part Ii: Redeeming The Body Politic, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 1997

Identity Notes Part Ii: Redeeming The Body Politic, Adrienne D. Davis

Scholarship@WashULaw

These remarks were given in April 1996 at the First Annual LatCrit Conference, co-sponsored by California Western Law School and the Harvard Latino Law Review. While the body of Christ has not been used explicitly to order secular American law and political theory, a multi-dimensional analysis of his body in Western political theory would have to include its use at a critical historic moment as an organizing metaphor for the racial order of the United States and the consolidation of the national identity as white. Reclamation of the national identity as historically always diverse, documentation of the denial of citizenship …

Meeting The Needs Of The Learning Disabled-Gifted Child : A Problem Of Non-Identification, Jill R. Nooren

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to ascertain possible solutions to remedy the pervasive problem of the failure to identify and meet the needs of learning disabled-gifted children. Using a literature review, the writer sought to determine the characteristics of learning disabled-gifted children, perceived barriers to the identification of learning disabled-gifted children, and programming approaches that would best meet the needs of these unique learners.

Writing Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Lisa A. Friday Jan 1997

Writing Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Lisa A. Friday

Graduate Research Papers

Much attention has been given to the authentic assessment of children's involvement in the writing process. Such assessment entails descriptive, or qualitative techniques. One descriptive technique is portfolios. In developing portfolios, students can become actively involved in their own learning and in establishing goals for future learning. Thus, instruction can be more closely related to assessment.

How writing portfolios were implemented in a first grade classroom is discussed. Two reluctant writers were particularly focused on as they developed their writing portfolios. These children selected exhibits for their portfolios with support from their teacher. As they developed their collections, the students …

Choosing An Effective Kindergarten Program : Comparing Full-Day And Half-Day Schedules, Lori A. Frost Jan 1997

Choosing An Effective Kindergarten Program : Comparing Full-Day And Half-Day Schedules, Lori A. Frost

Graduate Research Papers

Due to changes in American society and education during the last twenty years the popularity of all-day, everyday kindergarten programs has grown. Among the many issues cited as reasons for implementing all-day kindergarten programs are ". . . a growing need for child care, the need for more opportunity for socialization among young children, and a demand for more academically challenging programs" (Rust, 1993, p. 8).

The "whole child" approach is what we strive for today. However, that focus has been compromised in some instances by placing financial, parental, or school needs ahead of what is best for kindergarten students. …

Increasing Students' Use Of Descriptive Words And Figurative Language In Their Writing By Creating A Climate Of Words In The Classroom, Mary Brigid Stanley Jan 1997

Increasing Students' Use Of Descriptive Words And Figurative Language In Their Writing By Creating A Climate Of Words In The Classroom, Mary Brigid Stanley

Graduate Research Papers

The effects of immersion in a climate of words and subsequent use of descriptive words and figures of speech in student writing was investigated in a Grade 6 language arts classroom. Five students were exposed to a climate of words for six weeks. The hypothesis was made that a climate of words in the classroom will have an effect on students' writing. The same common prompt essay assignment was given at the beginning and end of the six weeks, and the number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, sensory words, and figures of speech were compared. All the students showed an …

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt Jan 1997

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt

Theses and Dissertations

Music is a by-product of place and time. Musicians have opportunities to use the idea of place in their music. Thus, music has regionally distinctive characteristics which reflect human perceptions of the physical environment. Artists of the past and present focus on geographical themes, and paint a picture of ‘place’ in their music. This thesis focuses on the music of a geographical location: Utah. Musicians wrote of Utah in hymns of the past, and contemporary musicians continue to write music about Utah. This thesis answers the questions: Is music characterized by geography? How have the local musicians been influenced by …

Balancing The Demands Of Employment And Family Life: Results Of The Family Caregiving Survey, Eileen M. Brennan, John Poertner

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes patterns of work and family balance that were examined for employed parents who give family care to children with serious emotional disorders. A secondary analysis of data from the Family Caregiver Survey was performed for a subsample of 184 caregivers employed outside the home or having a partner employed full time. Families having different work structures (patterns of part- or full-time employment and of parenting arrangements) reported significantly different levels of job stress, pleasure in work and intimate relationships, work used as coping, and satisfaction handling home responsibilities. Although reported child behaviors were significantly related to stress …

The Introduction Of The Euro And Its Implications For Obligations Denominated In Currencies Replaced By The Euro, Michael Gruson

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article will discuss to what extent fears that debt in a country’s national currency will no longer be enforceable under U.S. law after the introduction of the Euro are justified. The article assumes that the European Council, as provided for in the Treaty Establishing the European Community ("EC Treaty") and the European Commission's European Council Regulation, will establish a fixed rate of conversion for the old national currencies of all participating Member States in relation to the Euro. The subject of our inquiry, thus, is whether, following the introduction of the single currency, U.S. courts will acknowledge the abolition …
