Particle Modeling Of Liquid Drop Formation On A Solid Surface In 3-D, Mark Korlie Jan 1997

Particle Modeling Of Liquid Drop Formation On A Solid Surface In 3-D, Mark Korlie

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical Newtonian dynamics, we show how to simulate a liquid drop formation on a horizontal solid surface in three-dimensional space. We use sets of quasi-molecular particles which interact in accordance with classical molecular-type formulas. For application, the liquid is taken to be water while the solid surface is taken to be graphite. The resulting dynamical equations for the particles are large systems of second-order, nonlinear, ordinary differential equations which must be solved by a numerical method. Computer simulations of the results and related contact angle calculations are presented and discussed. The results are in …

Particle Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Bubbles In Water, Mark Korlie, D. Greenspan Jan 1997

Particle Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Bubbles In Water, Mark Korlie, D. Greenspan

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical molecular dynamics type formulas, a method that can be used to simulate the motion of fluid drops within fluids is described through a detailed study of a prototype problem, the motion of carbon dioxide bubbles in water. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The rise of the bubbles and the motion of the water near the bubbles are described.

An Alternative To Government Regulation And Censorship: Content Advisory Systems For The Internet, C. Dianne Martin, Joseph M. Reagle Jan 1997

An Alternative To Government Regulation And Censorship: Content Advisory Systems For The Internet, C. Dianne Martin, Joseph M. Reagle

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The explosive growth of online services and access in the United States and other technologically sophisticated nations has resulted in a huge increase of on-line users below the age of eighteen. With this increase, there has been an accompanying surge in the availability of adult oriented content and services. Consequently, a plethora of government policies and industry strategies have emerged that attempt to shield the public, and in particular children, from exposure to content deemed inappropriate.

Due to the competing interests between government control and regulation of content on the one hand, and individual privacy, autonomy, and free speech on …

The Effects Of Telecommunications On Business, Richard Susskind Jan 1997

The Effects Of Telecommunications On Business, Richard Susskind

Fordham International Law Journal

Speech given at Session 2: World Communication: Where is Technology Leading Us? In many ways it does not make much sense if, say, you are setting up a business to go to one source for your legal guidance, another source for your accounting guidance, and another source for your financial advice. It will all come together, and lawyers may indeed be the people who bring that together into multidisciplinary services, bringing together the information that people require in their real-world circumstances. We will no longer package or present our guidance in the traditional legal categories, but we will aim them …

Global Finance And Markets: What Is Next, Steven M.H. Wallman Jan 1997

Global Finance And Markets: What Is Next, Steven M.H. Wallman

Fordham International Law Journal

Speech given at Session 1: The Global Capital Market: What's Next. Mr. Wallman spoke about the issue of globalization and how it raises a series of questions as to the direction of our markets over the long term. In addition, he noted that we tend to separate securities issues from banking or other financial services issues too frequently. He also elaborated on the points made earlier about the convergence--both geographic and product-wise--of financial services.

Evidence That Elevated C02 Levels And Indirectly Increase Rhizosphere Denitrifier Activity, John M. Stark, D. Smart, K. Ritchie, Bruce Bugbee Jan 1997

Evidence That Elevated C02 Levels And Indirectly Increase Rhizosphere Denitrifier Activity, John M. Stark, D. Smart, K. Ritchie, Bruce Bugbee

Biology Faculty Publications

We examined the influence of elevated CO2 concentration on denitrifier enzyme activity in wheat rhizoplanes by using controlled environments and solution culture techniques. Potential denitrification activity was from 3 to 24 times higher on roots that were grown under an elevated CO2 concentration of 1,000 micromoles of CO2 mol-1 than on roots grown under ambient levels of CO2. Nitrogen loss, as determined by a nitrogen mass balance, increased with elevated CO2 levels in the shoot environment and with a high NO3- concentration in the rooting zone. These results indicated that aerial CO2 concentration can play a role in rhizosphere denitrifier …

Etched against the sky are the graceful towers of mighty bridges, the broad glass and steel fronts to massive buildings, the tall slender stacks of industries exhaling; and traced on the surface are the intricate patterns of people and their machines; and buried below are the tubes and tunnels, water pipes and power conduits and communication networks along with concrete caissons and piles that …

Introduction To Simulation/Optimization Modeling For Groundwater Containment Remediation And (B) Ramifications Of Applying S/O Modeling To Groundwater Containment Remediation, With Case Study Examples, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1997

Introduction To Simulation/Optimization Modeling For Groundwater Containment Remediation And (B) Ramifications Of Applying S/O Modeling To Groundwater Containment Remediation, With Case Study Examples, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Normal use of a simulation model to develop a groundwater extraction/injection strategy employs the following process: (1) specify management goals, (2) assume a pumping strategy, (3) simulate system response to the pumping strategy, (4) evaluate acceptability of the system responses, (5) repeat steps (2-4) as required. This is a trial and error approach that is unlikely to actually yield the best pumping strategy for complicated problems

Optimal System Design Of In-Situ Bioremediation Using Parallel Recombinative Simulated Annealing, Horng-Jer Shieh, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1997

Optimal System Design Of In-Situ Bioremediation Using Parallel Recombinative Simulated Annealing, Horng-Jer Shieh, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a simulation/optimization model combining optimization with BIOPLUME II simulation for optimizing in-situ bioremediation system design. In-situ bioremediation of contaminated groundwater has become widely accepted because of its cost-effective ability to achieve satisfactory cleanup. We use parallel recombinative simulated annealing to search for an optimal design and apply the BIOPLUME II model to simulate aquifer hydraulics and bioremediation. Parallel recombinative simulated annealing is a general-purpose optimization approach that has the good convergence of simulated annealing and the efficient parallelization of a genetic algorithm. This is the first time that parallel recombinative simulated annealing has been applied to groundwater management. …

Optimal In-Situ Bioremediation System Design Using Parallel Recombinative Simulated Annealing, Horng-Jer Shieh, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Presented is a simulation/optimization (S/0) model combining optimization with BIOPLUME II simulation for optimizing in-situ bioremediation system design. The (S/0) model uses parallel recombinative simulated annealing to search for an optimal design and applies the BIOPLUME II model to simulate aquifer hydraulics and bioremediation. Parallel recombinative simulated annealing is a general-purpose optimization approach that has the good convergence of simulated annealing and the efficient parallelization of a genetic algorithm. We propose a two-stage management approach. The first stage design goal is to minimize total system cost (pumping/treatment, well installation and facility capital costs). The second stage design goal is to …

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih Jan 1997

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We provide efficient parallel algorithms for the minimum separation, offset range, and optimal offset problems for single-layer channel routing. We consider all the variations of these problems that are known to have linear- time sequential solutions rather than limiting attention to the "river-routing" context, where single-sided connections are disallowed. For the minimum separation problem, we obtain O(lgN) time on a CREW PRAM or O(lgN / lglgN) time on a (common) CRCW PRAM, both with optimal work (processor- time product) of O(N), where N is the number of terminals. For the offset range problem, we obtain the same time and processor …

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy

Faculty Publications

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to solve the three-dimensional nano-scale gas film lubrication problem between a gas bearing slider and a rotating disk, and this solution is compared to the numerical solution of the compressible Reynolds equations with the slip flow correction based on the linearized Boltzmann equation as presented by Fukui and Kaneko [molecular gas film lubrication (MGL) method] [ASME J. Tribol. 110, 253 (1988)]. In the DSMC method, hundreds of thousands of simulated particles are used and their three velocity components and three spatial coordinates are calculated and recorded by using a hard-sphere collision …

Improved Determination Of Global Mean Sea Level Variations Using Topex/Poseidon Altimeter Data, R. S. Nerem, B. J. Haines, J. Hendricks, J. F. Minster, G. T. Mitchum, W. B. White Jan 1997

Improved Determination Of Global Mean Sea Level Variations Using Topex/Poseidon Altimeter Data, R. S. Nerem, B. J. Haines, J. Hendricks, J. F. Minster, G. T. Mitchum, W. B. White

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite altimeter mission has measured sea level on a global basis over the last 4 years at 10 day intervals. After correcting for a recently discovered error in the measurements, the estimated rate of global mean sea level change over this time period is −0.2 mm/year. Comparisons to tide gauge sea levels measured in spatial and temporal proximity to the satellite measurements suggest there is a residual drift in the satellite measurement system of −2.3±1.2 mm/year, the origin of which is presently unknown. Application of this rate correction yields a “calibrated” estimate of +2.1±1.3 mm/year for the rate …
