Young Children's Talk At Play: Orientation To Self And Orientation To The Joint Exigencies Of Conversation, Paige K. Parker Jan 1997

Young Children's Talk At Play: Orientation To Self And Orientation To The Joint Exigencies Of Conversation, Paige K. Parker

Masters Theses

This study employed a conversation analytic approach to determine how children in naturally constructed play episodes use language as an object of play and how children in their naturally occurring talk display orientation to their own individual activities and others' social actions. The participants were thirty-nine kindergarten and first grade students at South Elementary School in Marshall, Illinois. The study is based upon fifteen hours of conversation collected during recess periods. Relevant segments from the corpus were transcribed according to an adapted version of Jefferson's Transcript Notation System (1984). The findings suggested that (1) the groups of children used language …

A Resource Document For The Development Of An Alternative Education Program For Disruptive Youth, Deborah Claunch Jan 1997

A Resource Document For The Development Of An Alternative Education Program For Disruptive Youth, Deborah Claunch

Masters Theses

This qualitative study developed a model for an alternative education program for disruptive students in grades 6 through 8 in Franklin and Williamson Counties in Southern Illinois. It was facilitated by the issuance of grant funds to the Regional Offices of Education by the Illinois State Board of Education under the Safe Schools Act of 1995.

The desire of the researcher was to develop a program that would lead to changes in behaviors, promote academic achievement, and return students to the regular school environment with fewer incidents of misbehavior. The outcomes of this qualitative study resulted in a comprehensive resource …

Science And Christianity: The Positive Attitude, C. Gordon Winder Jan 1997

Science And Christianity: The Positive Attitude, C. Gordon Winder

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Judeo-Christian Scriptures have been considered by literalists as true in every aspect, including references to the sciences. Scripture states that earth has four corners suggesting that the earth is flat. The sun rises in the morning suggesting that the sun goes around the earth, and earth with humankind is at the centre of the universe. The six days in the Genesis account along with the genealogical chronologies were used by Irish Bishop James Ussher (1581-1652) to calculate that the earth's origin was in 4004 B.C. The Genesis account relates that the origin of humankind, and all the plants and …

Education's Promise, Laurel Oates, Sam Wineberg Jan 1997

Education's Promise, Laurel Oates, Sam Wineberg

Faculty Articles

This is a story with at least two parts. In the first part, Sam Wineburg, a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Washington, tells his story, the story of instruction in the United States, beginning with one revolution, the scientific revolution, and ending with another, the cognitive revolution. In the second part, Laurel Oates, the Director of Legal Writing at Seattle University School of Law, tells our story, the story of legal education and, in particular, legal writing, and how both have been affected by these revolutions.

The New Requirement Of Enforcement Reliance In Commercial Promissory Estoppel: Section 90 As Catch-22, Sidney Delong Jan 1997

The New Requirement Of Enforcement Reliance In Commercial Promissory Estoppel: Section 90 As Catch-22, Sidney Delong

Faculty Articles

Any comprehensive examination of recent appellate court decisions will disclose that the legal doctrine of promissory estoppel has not become a significant source of commercial contractual obligation. Although commercial promissory estoppel claims are often made, plaintiff victories are very rare. These results are difficult to reconcile with frequent scholarly contentions to the effect that contemporary courts have become more receptive to claims of promissory estoppel and have liberalized its doctrinal requirements. More important, the promisor behavior that is incidentally disclosed in reported opinions also undermines academic arguments that rules providing for promissory estoppel have commercial utility. The decisions suggest that …

Legal Aspects Of The Internet, Etienne Pichat Jan 1997

Legal Aspects Of The Internet, Etienne Pichat

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis will explain the legal aspects of the Internet so that users who wish to protect their rights and avoid liability can log on with a better understanding of the rules of the game. This work will be divided into two chapters. The first chapter will focus on existing legal regulation of the Internet to advise users on which law is relevant, and how to solve problems of conflicts of laws in the cyberworld. It will answer the question of whether cyberspace is, or not, a "no laws land", and what kind of regulation would better fit the cyberworld. …

Particle Modeling Of Liquid Drop Formation On A Solid Surface In 3-D, Mark Korlie Jan 1997

Particle Modeling Of Liquid Drop Formation On A Solid Surface In 3-D, Mark Korlie

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical Newtonian dynamics, we show how to simulate a liquid drop formation on a horizontal solid surface in three-dimensional space. We use sets of quasi-molecular particles which interact in accordance with classical molecular-type formulas. For application, the liquid is taken to be water while the solid surface is taken to be graphite. The resulting dynamical equations for the particles are large systems of second-order, nonlinear, ordinary differential equations which must be solved by a numerical method. Computer simulations of the results and related contact angle calculations are presented and discussed. The results are in …

Particle Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Bubbles In Water, Mark Korlie, D. Greenspan Jan 1997

Particle Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Bubbles In Water, Mark Korlie, D. Greenspan

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Using a molecular aggregate approach and classical molecular dynamics type formulas, a method that can be used to simulate the motion of fluid drops within fluids is described through a detailed study of a prototype problem, the motion of carbon dioxide bubbles in water. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The rise of the bubbles and the motion of the water near the bubbles are described.

An Alternative To Government Regulation And Censorship: Content Advisory Systems For The Internet, C. Dianne Martin, Joseph M. Reagle Jan 1997

An Alternative To Government Regulation And Censorship: Content Advisory Systems For The Internet, C. Dianne Martin, Joseph M. Reagle

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The explosive growth of online services and access in the United States and other technologically sophisticated nations has resulted in a huge increase of on-line users below the age of eighteen. With this increase, there has been an accompanying surge in the availability of adult oriented content and services. Consequently, a plethora of government policies and industry strategies have emerged that attempt to shield the public, and in particular children, from exposure to content deemed inappropriate.

Due to the competing interests between government control and regulation of content on the one hand, and individual privacy, autonomy, and free speech on …

Developing Cross-Border Practice Rules: Challenges And Opportunities For Legal Education, Louis F. Del Duca, Vanessa P. Sciarra

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay first discusses differences in the process used by the European Community (“EC”) and North American Free Trade Agreement (“NAFTA”) in developing cross-border practice rules. This is followed by discussions of the developing NAFTA rules and resulting challenges and opportunities for legal education.
