A Study Of The Effects Of Damage On 7781/E-795 E-Glass/Eproxy Laminates: Investigations Of Experimental Techniques And Development Of A Predictive Model, Blake Carnahan Jan 1997

A Study Of The Effects Of Damage On 7781/E-795 E-Glass/Eproxy Laminates: Investigations Of Experimental Techniques And Development Of A Predictive Model, Blake Carnahan

Theses

Composite materials are used in a vast number of areas. Typical areas of use are in aircraft, space, and marine applications. Due to the nature of these applications, the materials may be exposed to various conditions which can inhibit their performance. Factors such as moisture and temperature are constantly changing, and measures must be taken to fully understand how environmental variations effect the performance of the components. Physical damage is also regularly encountered in these harsh environments as well as throughout the manufacturing and assembly of the products. The focus of this research is to explore and quantify the effects …

The Justification Of A Packaging Line Based On Capacity Issues, Chin Ho Jan 1997

The Justification Of A Packaging Line Based On Capacity Issues, Chin Ho

Theses

Due to the phenomenal increase in the long range marketing forecast for the products manufactured at the Garden City site of DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals, a capacity problem was identified. This paper evaluates the impact of the increased forecast and demands on the packaging operations, and also the justification of a packaging line to support the expected capacity overload. It addresses different alternatives available to the company to support the demand and evaluate these options based on cash flow analysis. In addition, the study allows the general reader outside the company to understand the methodology involved in the justification of a …

Grasp--A Language To Facilitate The Synthesis Of Parallel Programs, Todd Alan Gross Jan 1997

Grasp--A Language To Facilitate The Synthesis Of Parallel Programs, Todd Alan Gross

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the context of this thesis, the name Grasp subsumes three distinct but highly interrelated projects. First of all, Grasp is a programming language that allows the user to define properties of graph-theoretic objects by using high-level nonprocedural descriptions called specifications. Second, Grasp is a translator that converts specifications to standard sequential C functions. Finally, Grasp is a model of computation that has been left largely uninvestigated despite possessing several advantageous properties. Each of these aspects of Grasp is described in a contextually clean and detailed manner, but in the end the theoretical aspects of Grasp are espoused over the …

An Experimental Investigation Of Thermally-Induced Deformation Of 1 Micron Thick Copper/Tantalum/Polymide High-Density Interconnect Structures, Dmitry V. Zhmurkin Jan 1997

An Experimental Investigation Of Thermally-Induced Deformation Of 1 Micron Thick Copper/Tantalum/Polymide High-Density Interconnect Structures, Dmitry V. Zhmurkin

Doctoral Dissertations

A new technique to estimate the out-of-plane thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of several 1 $\mu$m thick, spin-coated polyimides is introduced. Arrays of parallel copper and polyimide lines of various aspect ratios on Si substrate were imaged in air at room temperature and at 97$\sp\circ$C using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The out-of-plane CTE of the polyimides was estimated by matching the experimental results with the predictions of finite element models with different out-of-plane parameters. For FPI-135 (6FCDA-TMOB) polyimide the out-of-plane CTE was found to be $\approx$260 ppm/$\sp\circ$C, for FPI-136 (PMDA-6FDA-TFMOB) polyimide $\approx$120 ppm/$\sp\circ$C. Polyimide lines with widths equal to or …

An Analysis Of Printed Circuit Boards During Reflow Soldering., Paul Barry Jan 1997

An Analysis Of Printed Circuit Boards During Reflow Soldering., Paul Barry

Theses

Electronic manufacturing is currently one of the fastest growing industrial areas. This is due to the rapid advances in the computer and telecommunications sectors. Due to these advances, new surface mount devices have been developed to achieve greater miniaturisation at lower costs. As a result, a new surface mount technology has been developed to mount these devices onto printed circuit boards. However, problems exist with aspects of this process, principally open solder joints which result from circuit board warpage. The aim of this thesis is to undertake a) both an experimental and theoretical investigation of the reflow solder process and …

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan Jan 1997

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan

Theses

This thesis outlines research work carried out in the Mechanical & Manufacturing Department in Cork Regional Technical College, Ireland. With computers now having an increasingly dominant role in all areas of business, it was inevitable that computer-based project management packages would become more popular. To date however, these packages have concentrated on monitoring and controlling projects. The definition and brainstorming phases required to generate a project plan are still largely manual tasks. Planning a project initially involves generating a complete and organised list of all the tasks needing to be completed in order to achieve a project’s goal. This list …

Improving The Military/Media Relationship Through Education, Richard G. Steele Jan 1997

Improving The Military/Media Relationship Through Education, Richard G. Steele

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Having trained journalists who are knowledgeable about military operations is a crucial first step to obtaining the trust of military leaders and improving military/media relations (Offley, 1994). The purpose of this study is to assess the progress, if any, that has been made since the Gulf War in better educating and training journalists to cover the military. It will also attempt to identify the obstacles, if any, that are preventing this education from taking place and recommend ways to overcome those obstacles.

Instruction On The Web: Getting All Librarians Involved, Cynthia Wright Swaine Jan 1997

Instruction On The Web: Getting All Librarians Involved, Cynthia Wright Swaine

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

The Collection Development Council at Old Dominion University (Virginia) decided to involve all subject specialist librarians in creating guides to web resources in the disciplines for which they serve as bibliographers. The project was intended to help librarians become familiar with Internet resources in their fields of expertise and give them experience with World Wide Web searching. A worksheet for bibliographers and a sample guide were provided. Librarians were asked to complete a worksheet for one of their assigned areas of collection development in the next year. A separate Web Team would enter the guides, using HTML and mounting them …

Eisenhower And The Gaither Report: The Influence Of A Committee Of Experts On National Security Policy In The Late 1950s, David Lindsey Snead Jan 1997

Eisenhower And The Gaither Report: The Influence Of A Committee Of Experts On National Security Policy In The Late 1950s, David Lindsey Snead

Faculty Dissertations

As the United States reeled from the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik in late 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower received a top secret report prepared by a committee of leading scientific, business, and military experts. The panel, called the Gaither committee in recognition of its first chairman, H. Rowan Gaither, Jr., emphasized both the inadequacy of U.S. defense measures designed to protect the civil population and the vulnerability of the country's strategic nuclear forces in the event of a Soviet attack. The Gaither committee viewed these defense measures--ranging from a missile system to defend the continental United States to the …

Modern German Doctors: A Failure Of Professionalization?, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 1997

Modern German Doctors: A Failure Of Professionalization?, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

Even if we can assume that the vast majority of German physicians had nothing to do with medical "perversions," there must have been reasons why so many went along with other aims of the Nazi regime, at least initially. Were they more susceptible than other professional groups? If so, is there indeed something peculiar about their experience of professionalization?
