The concept of service-learning is not new, of course, but in the past decade, many higher education professionals have taken the lead in promoting this as an essential dimension of the college experience. Campus Compact, for example is a consortium of over 500 college presidents who have mandated integrating service programs into their institutions. Simultaneously, the American Association of Community Colleges has recently awarded 15 grants to community colleges to create Learn and Serve Program, to develop …

The Healing Community, Lin Griffith

Project Summaries

The healing community, a group of 32 students and their 4 instructors, will be sharing a special experience together for spring, ’97. The students will take four courses together. Anatomy and physiology, Algebra, English or ESL, and Volunteerism. The instructors—Joe Beeman, Carol Paxton, Lin Griffith, and Deborah Dentler—have adapted the courses to emphasize the connections between them: algebra problems will have nursing applications and term papers for the writing course will be on health-related topics. For the Volunteerism course, students will be placed in hospitals or clinics and will discuss their service experiences in class and in reflection journals.

Problem construction has been suggested as the first step in creative problem solving, but our understanding of the underlying process is limited. According to a model of problem construction (Mumford, Reiter-Palmon, & Redmond, 1994), problem construction ability, active engagement in problem construction, and the presence of diverse and inconsistent cues influence creative problem solving. To test these hypotheses, 195 undergraduates were asked to solve 6 real-life problems and complete a measure of problem construction ability. Active engagement in problem construction was manipulated by instructions to the participants. Cue consistency was manipulated by the information presented in the problem situation. The …

Groundwater Nitrate Removal In Forested And Suburban Vegetated Riparian Wetland Soils: A Mesocosm Mass Balance Approach, Kelly L. Addy

Although riparian zones can remove nitrate (NO₃) from groundwater, the interaction between vegetation type, subsurface patches of elevated organic matter and NO₃ removal rates is still uncertain. The goal of my study was to examine the effects of vegetation type on groundwater NO₃ removal rates in poorly drained riparian subsoils with four treatments, two "forested" and two "suburban" treatments. I also examined the variability in NO₃removal rates between riparian sites and the relationship between patches of elevated organic matter in the subsoil and groundwater NO₃ removal rates. Bat House Use In Central Florida, With Emphasis On Nycticeius Humeralis And Tadarida Brasiliensis Cynocephala, Laura Seckbach Finn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Bat houses and roost sites utilized by Tadarida brasiliensis and Nycticeius humeralis were studied in four central Florida counties. Temperatures were monitored in occupied roosts and in bat houses. It was determined that the presence of bats affects roost temperature. The mean temperature in the bat house that was preferred at the Seminole Community College (SCC) site was above ambient temperature a significantly greater amount of time than mean temperature in the other style houses located at that site. A colony of bats roosting in buildings on the property of SCC was successfully relocated into bat houses located .4 kilometers …
