Identification, Distribution, And Aspects Of The Biology Of Ten Anthuridean Isopod Species From The Shallow Continental Shelf Of The U.S. Gulf And East Coast, Brian Kensley

With the aim of easing identification of continental shelf isopods, ten species of anthurideans, viz. Amakusanthura magnifica, Amakusanthura signata, Cyathura barbancki, Ptilanthura colpos, Ptilanthura tenuis, Hyssura bacescui, Kupellonura formosa, Neohyssura irpex, Xenanthura brevitelson, and Accalathura crenulata, are given brief diagnoses. A map showing the distribution of records, line figures illustrating diagnostic features, and a key to families, genera, and species are also provided.

Distribution And Abundance Of Chaetognatha On The Yucatan Shelf During May, 1986., Silvia Mille-Pagaza, Rocio Reyes-Martinez, M. Elena Sanchez-Salazar

An analysis of chaetognath species distribution and abundance from the Yucatan Shelf during May 1986 is presented. Zooplankton samples and associated hydrographic data were collected at 21 stations off the northern and northwestern coasts of the peninsula. Density data were classified and analyzed by calculating the Euclidian distance. In addition, the Importance Value of the species was obtained. Highest abundance (1000 to 5000 orgs./100m³) occurred in the northern and northwestern zones off the peninsula, while species richness was higher at oceanic stations farther offshore. Size And Weight Relationships For The Golden Crab, Chaceon Fenneri, And The Red Crab, Chaceon Quinquedens, From The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Christine Trigg, Harriet Perry

Carapace length, carapace width, and weight relationships are discussed for the golden crab, Chaceon fenneri, and the red crab, Chaceon quinquedens, from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Males of both species were significantly larger than females in comparisons of means of all measured parameters. Relationships between carapace length and carapace width, carapace length and weight, and carapace width and weight were similar between Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico populations for both species.

Stomatopod Crustaceans From The Carolinas And Georgia, Southeastern United States, Raymond B. Manning, Richard W. Heard

Literature and specimen records are updated for stomatopod crustaceans known from the coasts of the Carolinas and Georgia. Gibbesia, new genus, is recognized for Squilla neglecta, and a new species, Neogonodactylus wennerae, is named for an offshore species of Neogonodactylus previously identified with the Caribbean shore species N. bredini. Fifteen species of stomatopods representing 12 genera are now known from the area: Bigelowina biminiensis (Bigelow), Cloridopsis dubia (Milne Edwards), Coronis scolopendra Latreille, Gibbesia neglecta (Gibbes), Heterosquilloides armata (Smith), Meiosquilla quadridens (Bigelow), Lysiosquilla scabricauda (Lamarck), Lysiosquillina glabriuscula (Lamarck), Nannosquilla carolinensis Manning, N. whitingi Camp & Manning, Neogonodactylus …

A Study Of Factors Influencing The Hatch Rate Of Penaeus Vannamei Eggs. Iii. Presence Of The Female After Spawning, John T. Ogle, Kathleen A. Beaugez

A comparison was made of the hatch rate (percent hatch) of Penaeus vannamei eggs. The study was comprised of 100 spawns from mated Penaeus vannamei females. In,one treatment, 50 female shrimp were removed from the isolation spawning tanks after spawning occurred but prior to hatching of eggs, producing 49.7% mean hatch rate. In the other treatment, 50 female shrimp were left in the tanks until after the eggs had hatched, producing an average hatch rate of 35.0%. The symbolic meaning of the phrase "tongues untied" has grown to identify a small, yet expanding, cultural, intellectual, and artistic "movement" aimed at revealing - or ending the silence around - the interactions of race, class, gender, and sexuality, what one participant in the movement described as "the transformation of silence into language and action." The work of this movement contrasts starkly with that of the "dominant" gay and lesbian culture and scholarship, where issues of racial and class subordination are neglected or rejected and where a universal gay and lesbian experience is assumed. Building community is very hard work, and it must be done with sincere, persistent, and concerted effort. My bias is toward a critical cultural pluralism wherein people seek to accept others as human beings without relinquishing the necessity of simultaneously evaluating one's own perspectives as well as others'. In this paper, I move from a clarification of fundamental definitions, to a delineation of the requisite elements, to forging the best possible society -- a community of total participation and humane partnership.

Management Of California Oak Woodlands: Uncertainties And Modeling, Jay E. Noel, Richard P. Thompson

A mathematical policy model of oak woodlands is presented. The model illustrates the policy uncertainties that exist in the management of oak woodlands. These uncertainties include: (1) selection of a policy criterion function, (2) woodland dynamics, (3) initial and final state of the woodland stock. The paper provides a review of each of the uncertainty issues. The final section of the paper describes a modeling approach that can be developed to assist policy makers in evaluating alternative oak woodland policy actions.

This paper explores the history of the school, from its start in 1992 to the present. This paper is divided into several parts based on different functional areas. This paper gives examples of how the Swedish school system works, compared to the new way of teaching at Fu1lriggaren Malevik. Self-incompatibility is a cell-cell recognition system in higher plants that is based on the ability of the pistil to distinguish non-self pollen from self pollen. In Petunia hybrida, selfincompatibility is controlled by a single locus, the S-locus. The sequences governing S-RNase expression are not known and an understanding of this would enable us to better manipulate selfincompatibility response in flowers. This study attempted to correlate the degree of reporter gene activity with varying amount of 5’ flanking sequence present on different gene constructs. In this article, we describe the development of computer-based learning programs for pathology students at Jefferson Medical College. These programs are authored using HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and are available to students on campus and via the internet. Our computer-based learning resources include scheduling information, course goals and objectives, glossary of key words, self-assessment programs and image-based case studies. These educational programs are popular with the students. We recommend the use of World Wide Web technology to improve teaching and learning in pathology education.

The Relationships Of Whitefly-Transmitted Bipartite Geminiviruses Of Mexico And The Southwestern United States, Kristin M. Ostrow

The whitefly-transmitted bipartite geminiviruses cause substantial losses of pepper, cucurbits, beans, and other crops in regions of Mexico, the Carribean, and the southwestern United States. In this project, several Subgroup ID geminiviruses were isolated, cloned, and characterized for the first time. Viruses studied in these experiments included TPV, PMTV, SGMV, BCMoV, SLCV, STLCV, and CdTV. Dimeric viral clones were constructed and assayed for infectivity by mechanical inoculations and gene gun inoculations. Cognate viral DNA infectivity studies (e.g. PMTV A and PMTV B) and noncognate viral DNA infectivity studies (e.g. PMTV A and SGMV B) were performed in order to determine …

When Congress enacted the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, commonly known as the Clean Water Act, it established a pollution control regime that imposed a baseline level of technology-based pollution control, and was designed to ensure that water quality would not fall below certain standards. Twenty-five years after the enactment of the Clean Water Act, success may be claimed with regard to technology-based controls. Achieving water quality standard (WQS) compliance has proved much more difficult. Indeed, evaluated from a variety of perspectives, the enforcement of the water quality-based system of pollution control must be viewed as a failure.

In his fiction Ernest Gaines is interested not only in deconstructing stereotypes but also in presenting new models of southern manhood, for both black and white men. While Gaines has employed traditional definitions of manhood in his fiction, the vision he presents in his most recent novel, A Lesson Before Dying, is similar to that of Cooper Thompson and other contemporary theorists of masculinity, who believe that young men must learn 'traditional masculinity is life threatening' and that being men in a modern world means accepting their vulnerability, expressing a range of emotions, asking for help and support, learning non-violent …
