Dietary Fiber In Sow Gestation Diets — A Review, Duane Reese

Gestation sows are well suited to utilize high-fiber, low-density diets. They utilize fiber better than growing pigs and during gestation have a high feed intake capacity relative to their energy requirement. When research results from several studies were pooled and weighted according to the number of litters produced, sows fed additional fiber during gestation farrowed and weaned more pigs/litter than sows fed control diets. Feeding fiber during gestation also improved lactation feed intake, but reduced sow weight gain during pregnancy and pig birth weight. Sows fed fibrous diets also exhibit less stereotypic behavior (i.e., bar-biting), which may be an indication …

The first internally transcribed spacer region (ITS1) from cyst nematode species (Heteroderidae) was compared by nuc.leotide sequencing and PCR-RFLP. European, Asian, and North American isolates of five heterodefid species were examined to assess intraspecific variation. PCR-RFLP patterns of amplified ITS1 DNA from pea cyst nematode, Heterodera goettingiana, from Northern Ireland were identical with patterns from Washington State. Sequencing demonstrated that ITS1 heterogeneity existed within individuals and between isolates, but did not result in different restriction patterns. Three Indian and two U.S. isolates of the corn cyst nematode, Heterodera zeae, were compared. Sequencing detected variation among ITS1 clones from …

Regions of DNA rich in CpG dinucleotides, also known as CpG islands, are often located upstream of the transcription start side in both tissue specific and housekeeping genes. Overall, CPG dinucleotides are observed at a density of 25% the expected level from base composition alone, partially due to 5-methylcytosine decay (Bird, 1993). Since CpG dinucleotides typically occur with low frequency, CpG islands can be distinguished statistically in the genome. Our method of detecting CpG islands involves a heuristic algorithm employing classic changepoint methods and log-likelihood statistics. My first task, therefore, is to explain something about the general framework of regulation and then to show my reservations about Rasmusen's approach to these questions. The starting point for all theories of regulation is, in my view, not law but human biology. Given the forces of evolution, we should start with the assumption that all individuals are governed by a substantial dose of self-interest, which, if not properly directed, can result in socially destructive behavior. The trick of sound social design is to harness individual self-interest to sociallyproductive activities.

There are clearly deep divisions of opinion in New Zealand on the relationship between the courts and the Employment Contracts Act 1991 (ECA). These address both substantive and jurisdictional issues. Thus, the central dispute concerns the way courts should interpret the various provisions of the Act. The second concerns the question of whether a specialized court should have primary responsibility over administering and interpreting the Act. Clearly, the two questions are related, for the choice of tribunal is likely to have some systematic effects on the manner of interpretation. Observations Of Sea Turtles And Other Marine Life At The Explosive Removal Of Offshore Oil And Gas Structures In The Gulf Of Mexico, Gregg R. Gitschlag, Bryan A. Herczeg, Theresa R. Barcak

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Observers monitored the explosive removal of oil and gas structures in the Gulf of Mexico to protect sea turtles and marine mammals from adverse impacts. More than 7,000 monitoring hours at 131 structure removals were conducted during 1993. Sixteen individual sea turtles were observed including 6 loggerheads, 1 Kemp's ridley, 1 green, and 8 unidentified sea turtles. Aerial surveys were approximately ten times more effective in observing sea turtles than day or night surface surveys.

Zooplankton Variability And Copepod Species Assemblages From A Tropical Coastal Lagoon, J.N. Alvarez-Cadena, L. Segura-Puertas

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Results of monthly zooplankton sampling, carried out from December 1990 to November 1991, are compared from three localities in the Mexican Caribbean. Two stations, Bojórquez, and Cuenca Norte, represent partially enclosed areas of the Nichupté Lagoon System in the northeastern region of the Yucatán Peninsula; a third station was located in adjacent neritic waters. At the neritic station, temperature was lower, salinity was higher, and variations in the two parameters smaller as compared to the two lagoon stations. Zooplankton abundance ranged from 3585.5 org./m³ at the neritic station to 18,742.7 org./m³ at Cuenca Norte. Considering all animals collected, …

The public dissemination of census data invites battles over how human beings will be known. One census battle that has been at the forefront of the public debate is the demand for a "multiracial" category. The multiracial classification, as proposed, would be one of the race categories a respondent could choose in lieu of those currently listed by the Office of Management of Budget (OMB): American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black, White, or Other. An information processing signal detection methodology was employed to examine attentional allocation and its correlates in both normal comparison (NC) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) participants. In particular, the impact of neutral distractor and negative feedback cues on performance of an attention vigilance task was investigated. Individuals with GAD (N = 15) evidenced impaired performance on an attention vigilance task relative to NC participants (N = 15) when neutral distractor cues were presented. In this Essay, Professor Fitzgerald observes that the law and practice governing medical treatment decisions for seriously ill and disabled newborn children requires physicians and parents to compare such children with an unstated norm. She discerhs that our jurisprudence informs that unstated norm with an exclusive model of legal personhood, that of the autonomous individual, an independent and self-sufficient adult. Parents and physicians may conclude, then, that a seriously ill or disabled newborn child who cannot eventually become an autonomous adult should not receive life-saving or life-prolonging treatment. We discuss the role of Java and Web technologies for general simulation. We classify the classes of concurrency typical in problems and analyze separately the role of Java in user interfaces, coarse grain software integration, and detailed computational kernels. We conclude that Java could become a major language for computational science, as it potentially offers good performance, excellent user interfaces, and the advantages of object-oriented structure.

Effects Of Two (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquito Control Agents On Growth And Reproduction Of Red-Winged Blackbirds (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Joann M. Hanowski, Gerald J. Niemi, Ann R. Lima, Ronald R. Regal

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

We compared red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) reproductive success and nestling growth in 1988 in 10 wetland site treated with methoprene and 10 sites treated with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) to 30 sites that had never received any mosquito (Diptera: culicidae) control treatment. No differences were detected between reference and treatment sites for clutch size, egg volume, growth rates, or fledge weight. The probability that an egg survived to the nestling stage was greater in methoprene-treated than reference sites. No other differences were detected among sites for reproductive success estimated using the Mayfield method. We conclude that treatment of the wetlands …
