Vitamin E And Its Effects On Survival Of Ucv Irradiated Cells, Torrey K. Cross

Alpha-tocopherol, better known as vitamin E, has been known for years to possess antioxidant activity. In this experiment, three cell survival experiments were performed using HeLa cells transfected with the promoter from HIV. The cells were subjected to the following conditions: control, application of vitamin E, UVC irradiation and UVC irradiation and vitamin E application. The peak wavelength of the UVC specifically used was 254 nm. Vitamin E was not observed to significantly affect survival of the HeLa cells, except for a slight decrease with vitamin E presence. The results that were obtained showed a great deal of heterogeneity and …

Harris and Gordon (1987) reviewed the distribution and status of 18 rare and /or endangered unionacean bivalve species (commonly referred to as clams, mussels, freshwater mussels, naiads) that occur or have occurred in Arkansas. They discussed four species that were federally listed as endangered, four species that were considered endangered or extirpated within Arkansas, four species considered threatened within Arkansas, four species of special concern within Arkansas, and two species for which the conservation status was considered uncertain due to questions regarding taxonomic validity. The population size structure, length at age and condition of 140 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, were studied for Lake Ashbaugh, Arkansas. Scales and otoliths were used for age and length at age determination of individual bass. Length at age was determined by back-calculation and relative weight was used to measure condition. The Lake Ashbaugh population is dominated by young, slow growing bass in poor condition. Ninety-one percent of the largemouth bass in Lake Ashbaugh were less than four years of age, with age 3+ bass serving as the dominant year class. More than 10 million Americans, three quarters of them women, suffer some degree of recurrent migraine headaches. Feverfew [Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Schultz-Bip.) is a member of the Asteraceae family that is native to Europe. This plant is a perennial flowering aromatic plant common in gardens. It has been widely used as a self-medication of arthritis, fever, and migraine headaches for over 2000 years. Sesquiterpene lactones (SL) are the components responsible for the antimigraine activity of feverfew. Effects Of Retained Pine And Hardwood Basal Areas On Percent Cover Of Plants Utilized By Bobwhite Quail, David G. Peitz, Philip A. Tappe, Michael G. Shelton

Percent cover of seven forage species utilized by bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) was determined before thinning and 2 and 4 years after thinning a 35-year-old loblolly pine-hardwood stand. Combinations of three loblolly pine (15, 18, and 21 m2/ha) and three hardwood (0, 3.5, and 7 m2/ha) basal areas were replicated three times. Percent cover was determined for American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), blackberry (Rubus spp.), tick trefoil (Desmodium spp.), lespedeza (Lespedeza spp.), panic grass (Panicum spp.), yellow wood sorrel (Oxalis stricta), and three-seeded mercury (Acalypha spp.). Adaptive Significance Of Re-Nesting Following Nest Abandonment In The Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher (Polioptila Caerulea), Melissa Nicole Helton

We studied the adaptive significance of nest abandonment and re-nesting in the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) in east-central Illinois from 1995 through 1997. This Neotropical migrant is widely distributed and highly persistent in re-nesting following nest abandonment. Nest abandonment may be a response to brood parasitism, predation or other nest disturbances. We studied the nesting behavior of gnatcatchers and investigated the cues which may elicit nest abandonment. We monitored 57 pairs of gnatcatchers which built a total of 98 nests. Twenty pairs successfully fledged a total of 63 young and overall nest success was only 8.5%. Daily mortality rates for …

Studies were undertaken to examine the processes of oxygen-dependent organic xenobiotic metabolism in fish and mussel. The antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1 ), catalase (EC 1.11.1.6), selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (SeGPX; EC 1.11.1.9) glutathione reducate (EC 1.6.4.2), DT Diaphorase (quinone oxidoreductase; EC 1.6.99.2), total GPX activity (sum of SeGPX and Se-independent GPX activities) and levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) were determined in 13 500g supernatants of embryos, 3- day and 11-day post-hatch larvae of turbot Scophthalmus maximus. The early life stages of S. maximus demonstrated the potential to detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS), organic peroxides and redox cycling compounds. The …

Marine zooplankton play an important role in the transfer of CO2 from the atmosphere/ocean system to deeper waters and the sediments. They also provide food for much of the world's fish stocks and in some areas of the ocean depleted of nutrients they sustain phytoplankton growth by recycling nutrients. They therefore have a profound effect on the carbon cycle and upon life in the oceans. There is a perceived lack of information about global distributions of zooplankton needed to validate ecosystems dynamics models, and the traditional methods of survey are inadequate to provide this information. The SBR process is a discontinuous, unsteady state process and has developed popularity in many countries assisted by reliable control technology for example programmable logic control. A typical SBR installation achieves equalisation, aeration and clarification of batches of wastewater on a timed sequence in one basin. This is in contrast to a volume sequenced process such as the conventional continuous stirred tank reactor where individual treatment objectives are met in separate basins. Advantages include, flexability, minimum energy input, consistent effluent quality and inhibition of filament organism growth by properly controlling substrate concentration and aeration sequences. An Analog Integrated Circuit For Continuous-Time Gain And Offset Calibration Of Sensor Arrays, Yu Ming Chiang, John G. Harris

Parameter variations cause unavoidable nonuniformities in Infra-Red Focal Plane Arrays and other integrated sensors. Since these nonuniformities change slowly with time, calibrating sensors one-time only is not suitable-much more frequent calibration is required. We have developed an algorithm that continually calibrates an array of sensors that contain gain and offset variations. This algorithm has been mapped to analog hardware and designed and fabricated with a 2um CMOS technology. Measured results from the chip show that the system achieves invariance to gain and offset variations of the input signal.

A Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study Of Γ-Crystallins Near Their Isoelectric Point, Paul Petitt, Michael Eugene Edwards, Daniel Forciniti

In this paper, a small-angle neutron scattering study of γII-crystallins near their isoelectric point is presented. The experiments were carried out using protein concentrations of 5.7-85.7 mg/ml at temperatures in the range 11-60°C. The experimental data were analyzed using an ellipsoidal model for intraparticle correlations and the mean spherical approximation for interparticle correlations. Our studies revealed that γII-crystallins have a thick hydration layer, which is possibly due to the special arrangement of polar and ionic groups on their surface. CD40 is a molecule present on multiple cell types including B lymphocyte lineage cells. CD40 has been shown to play an important role in B cell differentiation and activation in vitro, although little is known concerning the effects of CD40 stimulation in vivo. We therefore examined the effects of CD40 stimulation in mice using a syngeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) model in an effort to augment B cell recovery after high dose therapy with hematopoietic reconstitution. After the BMT, mice were treated with or without 2-6 μg of a soluble recombinant murine CD40 ligand (srmCD40L) given intraperitoneally twice a week. …

The collision dynamics of He single ionization by [Formula Presented] impact was explored using the reaction microscope of the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, a high-resolution integrated multielectron recoil-ion momentum spectrometer. The complete three-particle final-state momentum distribution (nine Cartesian components [Formula Presented]) was imaged with a resolution of [Formula Presented] by measuring the three momentum components of the emitted electron and the recoiling target ion in coincidence. Some legal commentators would analogize the description of the prisoner of The Pit and the Pendulum to modern tort law and policy. Like a pendulum, tort law is always in motion, swinging between two ideologies: those being the plaintiff-oriented rights of the 1970s-80s, and the tort-reforms which began in the mid-80s. This trend continued until the 1990s and the decision of State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. v. Gandy where Texas plaintiffs began experiencing setbacks.
