Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn

The effects of two vacuum packaging methods (hot and cold vacuum packaging) on the storage stability and sensory characteristics of cooked meat were compared. Ground turkey breast and leg meat patties were cooked, vacuum packaged appropriately, and stored up to 22 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. In addition, Total aerobic count and sensory evaluation (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall acceptability) were conducted. There was no significant difference in aerobic plate count by packaging methods; however, panelist rating revealed that hot-packaged turkey leg meat had higher juiciness and overall acceptability scores than cold-packaged ones. Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann

Fecal samples from 34 raptors admitted for rehabilitation were examined for helminth ova. All 34 birds, representing 13 different species, passed helminth ova in their feces. Six different types of helminth ova were identified, including strigeid trematode, cestode, Capillaria, Porrocaecum, Ascaridia and spiurid nematode. From this study, it appears that helminths, particularly tapeworms, are common parasites of raptors.

Fracture toughness has been recognised to be one of the most important mechanical property for retorative materials. It is the aim of this study to investigate the effect of thermocycling an fracture toughness of a range of dental composites; P50(P)1 , Silux Plus(S)2, Heliomolar(H)3, Clearfil Photo Posterior-light activated(CLA)4 and Clearfil Posterior-chemically activated(CC)3. 110 rectangular pre-notched specimens was prepared for each material utilising a stainless steel mould. Microleakage testing has been used to determine the possible clinical performance of a restorative material. Many microleakage testing materials have been developed and performed through the years. There has been no agreement as to which testing methodology would give the most accurate results. Attempts have been made to simulate the oral conditions and to give a more quantitative representation of micro leakage. The different micro leakage testing methodologies are presented in this paper.

A study was conducted over 3 yr to evaluate effects of sire birth weight EPD, calf birth weight and shape, and heifer pelvic area and weight, individually and in combination, on dystocia and subsequent rebreeding of 2-yr-old heifers. Heifers (n = 550), MARC II yearlings, were assigned for breeding to one of four Angus sires with birth weight EPD of -.95, -.82, +2.9, and +2.7 kg. At calving, heifers were assisted as needed. A gauge attached to the calf puller recorded applied traction pressure. Analysis of traction pressure detected only slightly larger amounts of variation (2 to 3%) affecting dystocia …

To evaluate the effect of orientation of hams during electromagnetic scanning on the estimation of dissected lean content, hams were scanned horizontally, posterior first (POS) or dorsal first (DOR), and vertically, medial side (aitchbone) first (MED; standing on the butt face). Weight and percentage of dissected lean were estimated using scan peak for each orientation, ham weight, and fat thickness. The mean scan peak for the MED orientation was approximately twice as great as peaks for the POS and DOR orientations, which suggests that this orientation may offer greater predictive accuracy by reducing the signal to noise ratio. Sertoli cells are critical for testicular function and maintenance of the spermatogenic process. The induction of Sertoli cell differentiation in the embryo promotes testicular development and male sex determination. The progression of Sertoli cell differentiation during puberty promotes the onset of spermatogenesis. The maintenance of optimal Sertoli cell differentiation in the adult is required for spermatogenesis to proceed. The current study was designed to investigate the transcriptional regulation of Sertoli cell differentiation through the analysis of a previously identified marker of differentiation, transferrin gene expression. Since pKM3 had two Hind HI sites (one is in the multiple cloning site of the vector pJM103 and the other is in ORF A) the ORF A fragment was first transferred into vector pGEM5Z which does not have any Hind in sites and then the kanamycin cassette was inserted. Protoplast transformation into B. megaterium PV361 yielded no kanamycin resistant colonies and controls were positive in three experiments, therefore, it can be concluded that ORF A was inactivated. Alpha-tocopherol, better known as vitamin E, has been known for years to possess antioxidant activity. In this experiment, three cell survival experiments were performed using HeLa cells transfected with the promoter from HIV. The cells were subjected to the following conditions: control, application of vitamin E, UVC irradiation and UVC irradiation and vitamin E application. The peak wavelength of the UVC specifically used was 254 nm. Vitamin E was not observed to significantly affect survival of the HeLa cells, except for a slight decrease with vitamin E presence. The results that were obtained showed a great deal of heterogeneity and …
