Slamming Shut The Ark Doors: Congress's Attack On The Listing Process Of The Endangered Species Act, Jeffrey S. Kopf

Animal Law Review

The 104th Congress legislated a complete moratorium on the listing of species and critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act. Mr. Kopf explores the motivations behind the moratorium and shows how market forces may further weaken the ESA. This article questions whether the moratorium and its subsequent repeal signal a new era of environmental awareness or a return to industry's discreet manipulation of the legislative process.

Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey

Amphibian larval polymorphisms, rarely found in the Midwest, are more common in arid western regions. We have discovered that Plains spadefoot toad, Spea bombifrons Cope, tadpoles occur as carnivorous and omnivorous morphological forms in flooded soybean and corn fields on the Missouri River flood plain of western Iowa. Carnivores have longer snouts, larger beaks with an upper cusp and lower notch, shorter intestines with fewer loops than the omnivores, and they feed on fairy shrimp. A similar polymorphism in Spea multiplicata Cope enhances survival in the desert because the carnivore develops faster after consuming fairy shrimp and is able to …

Additions To The Pteridophyte Flora Of Iowa-Iv, James H. Peck, Jeffrey C. Nekola, William Thomas

This report updates field collection records and summarizes nomenclatural changes of genera and binomials of species of Iowa pteridophytes based on the Flora of North America project. Botrychium simplex var. compositum, Gymnocarpium jessoense (Koidz.) Koidz. spp. parvulum Sarvela, Gymnocarpium Xhrittonianum (Sarvela) Pryer & Haufler, and Gymnocarpium Xintermedium Sarvela were recently added to the state flora. The flora now consists of 66 species, plus 7 hybrids, and 1 distinct form, for a total of 74 taxa. With the addition of 81 new county occurrence records, the Iowa pteridophyte flora now consists of 1754 county occurrence records. A data matrix of species/county …

The history of geology at Cornell College can be traced back almost to the college's beginnings. Though not the first to reach geology at Cornell, William Harmon Norton, more than any other person, shaped the Department of Geology and set it on its course of excellence. Born in 1856, the son of a Methodist minister, Norton developed an ardent interest in geology in his boyhood. A graduate of Cornell in Classics, Norton was hired by his alma mater in 1876 to reach Greek, bur his avocation was geology. He spent most of his spare time on weekends and during summers …

The envelope glycoprotein gp52, of Friend spleen focus-forming virus (F-SFFV) is responsible for the disease induced in mice by Friend virus (FV), which is a complex of F-SFFV and Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV). The murine Fv-2 gene controls the susceptibility to F-SFFV infection. Mice resistant at the Fv-2 locus can rarely be infected with the wild-type F-SFFV. The viruses isolated from resistant FV-induced diseased mice have an altered envelope glycoprotein. It has been demonstrated that interaction between gp52 and erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) is required for the disease production in mice. Nine species of Uncinia (Cyperaceae: Caricoideae) are recorded from Ecuador, one of which, U. ecuadorensis, is newly described and illustrated here. Descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and both artificial and vegetative keys are provided for the nine species, and for some uncinias additional taxonomic, phytogeographic and ecological comments are made. A lectotype is designated for the name U. lenuis.

Genome Size Variation Among Recent Human Isolates Of Salmonella Typhi, Kwai Lin Thong, S.D. Puthucheary, T. Pang

We performed genome size estimation of 17 recent human isolates of Salmonella typhi from geographically diverse regions using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) after digestion of chromosomal DNA with restriction endonucleases Xbal (5'-TCTAGA-3'), Avrll (5'-CCTAGG-3') and Spel (5'-ACTAGT-3'), and summation of the sizes of restriction fragments obtained. All 17 isolates had circular chromosomes, and genome sizes differed by as much as 959 kb, ranging from 3,964 to 4,923 kb (mean genome size = 4,528 kb). The data obtained confirm the usefulness of PFGE in studies of bacterial genome size and are in agreement with recent results indicating considerable genetic diversity and …

Translational Regulation Of Lipoprotein Lipase By Epinephrine Involves A Trans-Acting Binding Protein Interacting With The 3′ Untranslated Region, Gouri Ranganathan, Diane Vu, Philip A. Kern

To better characterize the translational regulation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) by epinephrine, cytoplasmic extracts were prepared from 3T3-L1 adipocytes, 3T3-F442A adipocytes, and other nonadipocyte cell lines (C2 cells, 3T3 fibroblasts, and Chinese hamster ovary cells). After treatment with epinephrine, cell extracts from the adipocytes inhibited LPL translation in an in vitro translation assay, whereas extracts from the C2 cells and 3T3 fibroblasts did not affect LPL translation. To identify the region on the LPL mRNA that controlled translation, in vitro translation was carried out using constructs containing different LPL sequences.
