Skeletochronological Study Of Adult Spiny Softshell Turtles (Apalone Spinifera) From Northeastern Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, Hilary J. Worley
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Skeletochronological techniques were used to examine age and growth in adult spiny softshell turtles {Apalone spiniferd) from northeastern Arkansas. The diaphyseal region offemurs of 24 specimens (8 mars mars; 16 venus venus) was excised, decalcified in weak hydrochloric acid, and histologically prepared for light microscopy. Skeletal growth was determined from histosectioned bones by measuring femur diameters as well as by counting lines of arrested growth (LAGs) that appear between distinct periosteal layers (marks of skeletal growth =MSGs) laid down during a single growing season. Although significant positive correlations were found between carapace length (CL) and femur diameter in both males …

Whoever Heard Of Standardized Art? The Complexity Of Using Portfolios For Licensing Principals, Jane Clark Lindle
Whoever Heard Of Standardized Art? The Complexity Of Using Portfolios For Licensing Principals, Jane Clark Lindle
Publications
One dominant metaphor in the standards-based movement to "professionalize" teaching is that of art and artist. The images of "performance" and "portfolio" are constantly in use, and since these metaphors can lead to interesting insights, pushing them to their logical conclusions is the purpose of this paper. It draws on the extensive literature in art criticism and asks if a portfolio evaluation is an oxymoron. Portfolios have been suggested as desirable evaluation tools because they are open-ended and allow for individual interpretation and reflection. Evaluation, however, requires a common structure and externally imposed, standardized value judgments--conditions that are difficult to …

The composition of the workforce has begun to undergo a change. The U.S Department of Labor estimates that women, minorities and immigrants will constitute 80 percent of the additions to the labor force between 1987 and the year 2000 (Oakes, 1990). The National Science Foundation projects that the United States may have a shortfall of 40,000 scientists and over 250,000 engineers by the year 2006 (Argonne, 1990). Since women are among those who are significantly underrepresented among individuals preparing for a career in science, thirty women who are currently pursuing a successful career in physical science and technology were interviewed. …

Race And Representation In Jury Service Selection, Kurt M. Saunders
Race And Representation In Jury Service Selection, Kurt M. Saunders
Duquesne Law Review
Individuals before the courts are entitled to present their cases to juries that are "representative of the community." The former Jury Commissioner of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania explores the history of juries, the circumstances that have acted to frustrate this entitlement, and presents his legislative proposal designed to ameliorate the present problems in selecting truly representative juries in Pennsylvania.

G97-1319 Management Of Smooth Sumac On Grasslands, John Ortmann, Katherine L. Miles, James L. Stubbendieck, Walter H. Schacht
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The herbicide 2,4-D LV4 ester provides excellent low-cost smooth sumac control. Prescribed burning before herbicide application does not substantially improve sumac control, but may ease herbicide application and provide other benefits.
Smooth sumac (Rhus glabra L.) is a native deciduous shrub that forms dense thickets from widely spreading roots. It is found in the Sandhills, mixed-grass, and tallgrass areas throughout Nebraska. Introduced cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), invade the thickets, and production of desirable forage species is reduced below the dense canopies. Trees and other shrubs readily establish in aging sumac thickets, accelerating the …
