Personality Factors Linked To Workplace Aggression As Measured By The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Mbti), Scott A. Cottrell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The present study examined the relationship between the personality dimensions assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and perceptions of workplace behaviors and the readiness to exhibit various forms of workplace aggression. College students with at least part-time work experience 129 (75 females and 54 males) completed the MBTI and a survey which asked participants to provide ratings of; (1) to which they would label various forms of workplace behavior as aggressive, and (2) the extent to which they have personally witnessed and exhibited various forms of workplace aggression. The results indicated that Men were less likely " indirect" workplace …

The Culture Of Dermal Replacements, Kristine Peterson Jan 1997

The Culture Of Dermal Replacements, Kristine Peterson

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Collagen-based wound dressings have been used to prevent excessive fluid loss and infection in individuals with severe skin damage, as well as to promote the re-growth and healing of the patient's own skin. In this study, problems encountered with cryopreservation of collagen-based wound dressings were researched.

A fibroblast cell-line was expanded in culture and seeded onto collagen sponges. The sponges were then cultured for varying lengths of time before freezing them at -80 degrees C. The sponges were analyzed to assess the total number of cells as a function of time in culture.

Toxicity tests were performed using varying concentrations …

Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), an enzyme that is central to the metabolism of glutamate, is present at high levels in the mammalian brain. Studies on human leukocytes and rat brain suggested the presence of two GDH activities differing in thermal stability and allosteric regulation, but molecular biological investigations led to the cloning of two human GDH-specific genes encoding highly homologous polypeptides. The first gene, designated GLUD1, is expressed in all tissues (housekeeping GDH), whereas the second gene, designated GLUD2, is expressed specifically in neural and testicular tissues. In this study, we obtained both GDH isoenzymes in pure form by expressing a …

Reproduced And Emergent Genres Of Communication On The World-Wide Web, Kevin Crowston, Marie Williams Jan 1997

Reproduced And Emergent Genres Of Communication On The World-Wide Web, Kevin Crowston, Marie Williams

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The World-Wide Web is growing quickly and being applied to many new types of communications. As a basis for studying organizational communications, Yates and Orlikowski [1, 2] proposed using genres. They defined genres as, “typified communicative actions characterized by similar substance and form and taken in response to recurrent situations” [1, p. 299]. They further suggested that communications in a new media will show both reproduction or adaptation of existing communicative genres as well as the emergence of new genres. We studied this phenomena on the World-Wide Web by examining randomly selected Web pages (100 in one sample and 1000 …

Naming The Grotesque Body In The "Nascent Jurisprudence Of Transsexualism", Richard F. Storrow Jan 1997

Naming The Grotesque Body In The "Nascent Jurisprudence Of Transsexualism", Richard F. Storrow

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

After a description of an analytical framework constructed of theories drawn from the writings of Mikhail Bahktin, Roland Barthes, and Sigmund Freud, this Article discusses the discrepancies in courts' use of medical authority in cases considering the rights of transsexuals and then analyzes courts' ultimate refusal to recognize transsexuals' psychological sex. The thrust of this Article is an examination of the forces compelling such inconsistencies. The result is an analysis which interweaves medical, juridical, psychological and mythic perspectives to disclose the underpinnings of courts' antipathy toward transsexuals.

Biological Response To Particulate Debris: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, A. S. Shanbhag, J. E. Dowd, J. J. Jacobs, D. M. Tramaglini, T. T. Glant, J. Black, H. E. Rubash

Cells and Materials

In this study, we compared the results of a human monocyte in vitro model and a canine in vivo model, to evaluate the response to different types of particulate wear debris. Both the in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium (TiAIV), ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and other particulate wear debris are stimulatory to macrophages and elicit release of several identifiable mediators involved in periprosthetic inflammation and bone resorption. Further, in the in vivo studies, these same particles initiated the formation of interfacial membranes which were histologically and biochemically similar to those seen in clinically failed …

Sintered Carbonate Apatites As Bone Substitutes, Yutaka Doi Jan 1997

Sintered Carbonate Apatites As Bone Substitutes, Yutaka Doi

Cells and Materials

Sintering of carbonate apatites was investigated and the usefulness of sintered specimens as bone substitutes was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Osteoclasts appeared to be capable of resorbing sintered carbonate apatite, which was as soluble as deproteinated bone and much more soluble than sintered hydroxyapatite in weak acids. In skull defects of Wistar rats, sintered carbonate apatite particles resorbed to an appreciable extent, but the rate of resorption did not exceed that of new bone formation. At 4 weeks after implantation the defects were filled almost completely with new bone that compared favorably with the host bone. These …

Detachment Of Human Endothelial Cells Under Flow From Wettability Gradient Surfaces With Different Functional Groups, T. G. Ruardy, H. E. Moorlag, J. M. Schakenraad, H. C. Van Der Mei, H. J. Busscher Jan 1997

Detachment Of Human Endothelial Cells Under Flow From Wettability Gradient Surfaces With Different Functional Groups, T. G. Ruardy, H. E. Moorlag, J. M. Schakenraad, H. C. Van Der Mei, H. J. Busscher

Cells and Materials

In this study, the position bound adhesion, spreading and detachment under flow of human umbilical cord endothelial cells (HUVEC) was studied on a dichlorodimethylsilane (DDS), dimethylocta-decylchlorosilane (DOCS) and tridecafluor-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl-1-dimethylchlorosilane (TFCS) wettability gradient on glass. Gradient surfaces were prepared by the diffusion method and characterized by the Wilhelmy plate technique for their wettability and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for their chemical composition. Quantitative analysis of the cellular response on the wettability gradient surfaces showed that the position bound cellular response was influenced by wettability for each type of gradient in a different way. On DDS-wettability gradients, cells withstood flow best …

Phenotypic And Genetic Analysis Of Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus Few Polyhedra Mutants: Mutations In The 25k Fp Gene May Be Caused By Dna Replication Errors, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek Jan 1997

Phenotypic And Genetic Analysis Of Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus Few Polyhedra Mutants: Mutations In The 25k Fp Gene May Be Caused By Dna Replication Errors, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We previously demonstrated that polyhedron formation (PF) mutants arise at a high frequency during serial passage of the Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV) in the L. dispar 652Y cell line (J. M. Slavicek, N. Hayes-Plazolles, and M. E. Kelly, Biol. Control 5:251–261, 1995). Most of these PF mutants exhibited the traits of few polyhedra (FP) mutants; however, no large DNA insertions or deletions that correlated with the appearance of the FP phenotype were found. In this study, we have characterized several of the PF mutants at the phenotypic and genetic levels. Genetic techniques were used to group the mutations in the …

Directed Panspermia. 3. Strategies And Motivations For Seeding Star-Forming Clouds, Michael Noah Mautner Jan 1997

Directed Panspermia. 3. Strategies And Motivations For Seeding Star-Forming Clouds, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

Microbial swarms aimed at star-forming regions of interstellar clouds can seed stellar associations of 10 - 100 young planetary systems. Swarms of millimeter size, milligram packets can be launched by 35 cm solar sails at 5E-4 c, to penetrate interstellar clouds. Selective capture in high-density planetary accretion zones of densities > 1E-17 kg m-3 is achieved by viscous drag. Strategies are evaluated to seed dense cloud cores, or individual protostellar condensations, accretion disks or young planets therein. Targeting the Ophiuchus cloud is described as a model system. The biological content, dispersed in 30 μm, 1E-10 kg capsules of 1E6 freeze-dried microorganisms …

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1997

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Approximately 3% of Iowa's forests are contained in state parks and preserves. In addition to aesthetics and recreation, these protected forests provide a vital service in the unique opportunities they provide for forest research. As intact ecosystems where natural ecological processes dominate, they provide standards by which we measure the effects of livestock pasturing, methods of timber harvest, and other manipulations of managed forests. A number of current studies and public programs emphasize the importance of natural diversity in forests. They rely on state parks and preserves to provide a measure of potential diversity for a given region of the …

American Mining Congress V. Army Corps Of Engineers: Ignoring Chevron And The Clean Water Act's Broad Purpose, Bradford Mank Jan 1997

American Mining Congress V. Army Corps Of Engineers: Ignoring Chevron And The Clean Water Act's Broad Purpose, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Part I of this article will provide a brief introduction to section 404 of the Clean Water Act. Part II will examine the Tulloch rule. Part III will examine the district court's opinion. Finally, part IV will demonstrate that section 404(a) is ambiguous regarding whether incidental fallback from dredging may in some circumstances constitute disposal under the statute and, accordingly, that under the Chevron doctrine the district court erred in failing to defer to the agencies' Tulloch rule.

Differences In Love Attitudes Across Family Life Stages, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Gwendolyn T. Sorell Jan 1997

Differences In Love Attitudes Across Family Life Stages, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Gwendolyn T. Sorell

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Differences in the endorsement of six love styles among four family life stage groups were investigated using the Love Attitude Scale. The sample included 250 adults in four groups: college-age single youth, young childless married adults, married adults with children living at home, and married adults with launched children. Significant differences in the groups' endorsements were found on several subscales, with most differences occurring between the non-married and married groups. Associations be- tween the love attitudes and relationship satisfaction at all life stages are discussed.
