Selection Of Populations Of Puccinia Recondita F. Sp. Tritici For Shortened Latent Period On A Partially Resistant Wheat Cultivar, Jeffery S. Lehman, Gregory Shaner Feb 1997

Selection Of Populations Of Puccinia Recondita F. Sp. Tritici For Shortened Latent Period On A Partially Resistant Wheat Cultivar, Jeffery S. Lehman, Gregory Shaner

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Wild-type fungal population 851-WT was selected for shortened latent period on cv. CI 13227 for five uredinial generations to study the adaptation of Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici to partially resistant wheat cultivars. Differences among wild-type and selected populations for traits contributing to parasitic fitness (i.e., latent period, infection frequency, and uredinium area and growth rate) were assessed in monocyclic infection experiments on susceptible cv. Monon and partially resistant cvs. Suwon 85, Sw 72469-6, L-574-1, and CI 13227. Differences were greatest among fungal populations on cv. CI 13227. The mean latent period of selected population 851-C5 was 2 days shorter …

Explanations For The Infrequent Cowbird Parasitism On Common Grackles, Brian D. Peer, Eric K. Bollinger Feb 1997

Explanations For The Infrequent Cowbird Parasitism On Common Grackles, Brian D. Peer, Eric K. Bollinger

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

We determined the factors responsible for the lack of parasitism on Common Grackles (Quiscalus quiscula) by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater). We found no evidence of parasitism on the 401 grackle nests we monitored in east-central Illinois. By the time cowbirds began laying eggs, 88.5% of all grackle nests were beyond the point of successful parasitism. Grackles rejected cowbird eggs more frequently during the prelaying stage of the nesting cycle (38.2%) compared to later stages (12.3%). Thirty-three cowbird eggs and nestlings were cross-fostered into grackle nests. Data were collected on 15 cowbird nestlings, of which three fledged. The cross-fostered cowbird eggs …

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

K129 is a residue located in the extracellular loop connecting transmembrane helices D and E of bacteriorhodopsin. Replacement of K129 with a histidine alters the pKa's of two key residues in the proton transport pathway, D85, and the proton release group (probably E204); the resulting pigment has properties that differ markedly from the wild type. 1) In the unphotolyzed state of the K129H mutant, the PKa of D85 is 5.1 ± 0.1 in 150 mM KCI (compared to ~2.6 in the wild-type bacteriorhodopsin), whereas the unphotolyzed-state PKa of E204 decreases to 8.1 ± 0.1 (from ~9.5 in the wild-type pigment). …

Phenology Of Apothecium Production In Populations Of Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi From Early- And Late-Maturing Blueberry Cultivars, Jeffery S. Lehman, Peter V. Oudemans Feb 1997

Phenology Of Apothecium Production In Populations Of Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi From Early- And Late-Maturing Blueberry Cultivars, Jeffery S. Lehman, Peter V. Oudemans

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Pseudosclerotia were evaluated for differences in timing of apothecium development in four controlled experiments conducted over a 2-year period. In a separate experiment, conidia from 10 randomly selected isolates from both of the fungal populations were used to inoculate open flowers. Germination of pseudosclerotia produced from these artificial inoculations also was evaluated. The timing and rate of shoot elongation for cvs. Weymouth and Jersey were assessed in one greenhouse and two field experiments. Average development times for the fungal population from cv. Weymouth were 8 to 15 days earlier or 33 to 42% less than those for the population from …

Quantitation Of Ethidium-Stained Closed Circular Dna In Agarose Gels, Michael F. Shubsda, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak Feb 1997

Quantitation Of Ethidium-Stained Closed Circular Dna In Agarose Gels, Michael F. Shubsda, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The fluorescence of ethidium bromide (EB) bound to equimolar amounts of supercoiled form I and unstrained linear form III pBR322, SV40 and PM2 DNA in agarose gels has been measured by scanning a photographic negative of the gel with a microdensitometer. For SV40 and PM2 DNA, commonly used staining conditions cause both forms, i.e. linear and supercoiled, to fluoresce to the same extent. This obviates the need to use a correction factor for the fluorescence of form I DNA when measuring the amount of this form relative to the amounts of unstrained forms in agarose gels. In the case of …

Book Review: An Inordinate Fondness For Beetles (Evans, A.V. And C.L. Bellamy), Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This nicely produced book is a visual celebration of beetles. Consider that it has 140 color photographs on 98 color plates . . . and 26 of those plates are of scarabs. Excellent! One should not construe my possible bias (or perhaps even that of the first author) as too narrow in its focus because the breadth of coverage of this volume is truly beetlewide.

In the Prologue, the authors briefly review the timeless fascination that humans have had with beetles. They note that most people are not aware of the diversity of beetles and are not impressed by such …
