An Historical Policy Examination Of The Adoption Assistance And Child Welfare Act Of 1980 (P.L. 96-272), Douglas E. Dooley

The Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980 (AACWA) (P.L. 96-272) was the first federal legislation that provided for family preservation services.

This study reviews the antecedent period between 1860 and 1980 to examine the policy trends in child welfare legislation and programs. DiNitto's (1983) incremental policy process is examined to show the evolution of how the issue of family preservation services became the focus of the federal government through the AACWA.

The dual philosophies of child rescue and services to the child and family are examined through the review of selected past legislation and programs. The reader is …

The ability of the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide (CHX) to prevent neuronal death in different paradigms has been interpreted to indicate that the cell death process requires synthesis of “killer” proteins. On the other hand, data indicate that neurotrophic factors protect neurons in the same death paradigms by inducing expression of neuroprotective gene products. We now provide evidence that in embryonic rat hippocampal cell cultures, CHX protects neurons against oxidative insults by a mechanism involving induction of neuroprotective gene products including the antiapoptotic gene bcl-2 and antioxidant enzymes. Individual Differences In Response To Novelty, Amphetamine-Induced Activity And Drug Discrimination In Rats, Rick A. Bevins, J. E. Klebaur, M. T. Bardo

Rats mere pre-tested in several individual difference screens - novelty-induced activity, novelty-induced place preference, novel-object interaction, and amphetamine-induced activity. Rats that were more sensitive to the locomotor effects of amphetamine were more active in an inescapable novel environment and displayed a greater preference for a novel environment. All animals were then trained to discriminate amphetamine (1 mg/kg) from saline in a two-bar discrimination procedure using food-maintained responding. After acquisition of the discrimination (mean =37 trials), two amphetamine generalization tests (0.0625,0.125,0.25,0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg) were conducted. Human Trampling Effects On Regeneration And Age Structures Of Pinus Edulis And Juniperus Monosperma, Alex S. Tonnesen, James J. Ebersole

Great Basin Naturalist

We examined effects of human foot traffic on age structures and densities of seedlings and saplings of Pinus edulis (Colorado pinyon) and Junisperus monosperma (one-seed juniper) in a heavily used urban park, Garden of the Gods, Colorado. Age structures show no stand-destroying disturbances, but they do contain small peaks 85–95 yr ago (minimum age), which have been interpreted as responses to heavy grazing. For Pinus edulis reverse J-shaped age structures indicate a strongly reproducing population, while flat age structures of J. monosperma show low present reproduction.
