Comparison Of Avrd Alleles From Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Glycinea, Lisa Wolfson Keith, Carol Boyd, Noel T. Keen, J. E. Patridge

Avirulence gene D alleles resided on indigenous plasmids in races 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea (Psg), but the allele in race 1 appeared to be chromosomal. These were all nonfunctional avirulence genes because they neither induced the avirulence phenotype on Rpg4 soybean cultivars nor directed the production of syringolide elicitors when expressed in Escherichia coli cells. The predicted proteins encoded by the seven Psg avrD genes were very similar to that of a functional class II allele from P. syringae pv. phaseolicola G50 race 2, but contained mutations collectively …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are known immunotoxicants in animals, and are suspect toxins to the human immune system. The mechanism(s), however, by which PAHs exert immunosuppression have not been fully elucidated. Previous studies conducted in our laboratory have shown that PAHs, such as 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)- anthracene (DMB A) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) may exert their immunotoxic effects by altering intracellular calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis in lymphocytes. Intracellular Ca2+ is an important second messenger in the immune response, and the mobilization of Ca2+ is critical in the transduction of intracellular signals from the plasma membrane to the nucleus. Soyhulls are a co-product of soybean processing. The soyhull is the seedcoat of the soybean (not the pod) and makes up approximately 8% of the soybean. When the soybeans are rolled or flaked, the soyhull pops loose from the meat of the seed. The soyhulls are very lightweight and once loose can easily be removed from the seed by air. The soyhulls are ground and blended back with the soybean meal to produce 44% meal, or they can be used as a feedstuff in various types of livestock and dry rations.

Johne's (pronounced yo-knees) disease is a slowly progressive disease of ruminants, including cattle. All beef producers need to be concerned about Johne's disease. Johne's costs the commercial beef producer through excessive culling, death loss, and suboptimal herd performance. Producers who sell Johne's infected breeding stock have been involved in litigation for selling diseased animals. Johne's is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. M. paratuberculosis is slow growing and resistant to all common antibiotics. In contrast to most common bacteria, the Johne's organism persists in the environment for long periods of time, especially in areas associated with water. The organism survives …

Social Organization Of Neotoma Micropus, The Southern Plains Woodrat, Sarah A. Conditt, David O. Ribble

This study described the social organization of Neotoma micropus, the southern plains woodrat, using radiotelemetry. We studied woodrats from September 1994 through April 1995 at the Urban Wilderness Reserve in S Bexar County, Texas. Sixteen individuals (three adult males, 11 adult females, and two subadult males) were radiocollared and located in the evening or early morning during January and February. Seventy-four percent of female radiolocations and 57% of male radiolocations were from their respective nests. No more than one adult individual was observed at any nest at the same time. Sulfides from Kraft mills and other processes are an odor problem. Using Thiobacillus thiooxidans as bacteria to be inoculated into an aerobic biological reactor can be an alternative to reducing the quantity and improving the quality of effluent gases. Approximately, two to three months was needed to insure that the Thiobacillus thiooxidans were growing in chains and colonies. So, this thesis was not fully completed due to the fact that the bacteria did not have enough time to grow. The central focus of this thesis was to study the possibility of and carry out an experiment dealing with biological oxidation of hydrogen sulfide. The biological reactor was to be a 5 inch in diameter, 14 inch tall PVC pipe filled with pine chips as a growth medium. The growth medium was to be seeded with thiobacillus thioxidans, a strain of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Hydrogen sulfide gas at approximately 50 parts per million was to be introduced into the reactor at a rate of 1.8 L/min, resulting in a retention time of approximately 60 seconds.
