Optimizing Biocides To Control Microorganisms, Josh Taube
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Microorganisms can cause many problems during the papermaking process. These problems include slime deposits, corrosion, felt plugging, holes, and additive contamination. An effective biocide program can reduce the numbers of microorganisms resulting in a reduction of these associated problems. This study focuses on the control of microorganisms on the paper machine and the relevant sources of water. Observation of the paper machine began with bleach being pumped into the headboxes, AES screen rotating shower water system and Bel-Bond showers. There was approximately 250 ml/min of bleach being pumped into each of these systems. The amount of bleach being pumped into …

Growth Patterns Of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon In Different Thermal Environments Of Alaskan Lakes, Jim A. Edmundson
Fisheries
Rearing conditions imposed on juvenile salmonids in lakes are important determinants of freshwater growth patterns. In Alaska, sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) nursery lakes exhibit a wide range in thermal characteristics. Compared to clear lakes, stained lakes are warmer and have longer growing seasons, whereas glacial lakes are colder and have shorter growing seasons. In stained lakes, a shallow thermocline restricts most of the heat to the surface layers. Deep mixing in glacial lakes, concomitant with meltwater intrusion, keep much of the water column near 4 °C. Mean depth accounts for 77% of the among-lake variation in the seasonal average water …

Effects Of Sample Size And Ageing Error On Estimates Of Sustained Yield, Lewis G. Coggins

A Monte Carlo simulation model of an exploited age-structured fish population was constructed, to evaluate the effects of sampling and ageing the catch on estimates of population parameters from catch-age analysis with auxiliary information and resultant estimates of sustained yield. A factorial experimental design was used where input parameters were varied among: small (100), medium (300) and large (900) catch sample sizes; high and low levels of ageing precision; and a range of ageing biases. Ageing bias and precision had dramatic effects on estimated sustained yield: positive ageing bias and ageing imprecision generally caused under-estimation of sustained yield, while negative …

The objective of this model-data intercomparison is to determine the feasibility of deriving an useful index for fluctuations in the Pacific to Indian Ocean throughflow volume transport. Due to insufficient direct observations and the present limitations in numerical models, accurate estimation of variations in the throughflow transport on seasonal to interannual timescales is not yet possible; however, an index based on weighted, monthly mean sea level anomalies in different regions of the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans is presented. Numerical model results and sea level from the TQPEX/POSEIDON altimeter show that the large-scale pressure gradient forcing of the throughflow …
