Breastfeeding Beliefs, Attitiudes, And Experiences Of Rural Native American Women, Joanne Blue

Breastfeeding has long been recognized as the preferred method of feeding. There is an increasing awareness of the need to return to traditions and values such as breastfeeding, which has been part of the Indian culture in the past. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to determine the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of breastfeeding among rural Native American women. Ajzen and Fishbein's (1080) Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Leininger’s theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality (1991) guided this study.

Electrophysiological Correlates Of Reading Processes In School Age Children, Catherine E. Scott

Orthographic and phonological decoding skills are known to be important for learning to read. In an attempt to develop physiologically based screening tools which may identify children at risk for developing these skills, Auditory Event Related Potentials (ERP) were recorded from 84 nine-year-olds to a series of Probe tones while they were engaged in a series of orthographic, phonological, and spelling tasks. Electrodes were applied over both hemispheres at the frontal, temporal, and parietal regions of the scalp. Analyses focus on the relationship between hemisphere differences and children's performance on each of these tasks.

Semipermeable Membrane Devices Are Effective Surrogates Of Fish In Concentrating Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Christopher Gardner Collins

This study examined the effectiveness of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) as surrogates for fish in concentrating polychlorinated biphenyls. Golden shiners (Notemigonus crysolucas) and SPMDs were exposed to three different concentrations (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0ppm) of Aroclor 1254 for 1, 3, and 5 days under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of Aroclor 1254 were measured in the SPMDs and fish tissue using extraction techniques and gas chromatography. The concentrations of PCB in SPMDs and N. crysolucas were positively correlated. This relationship compared favorably with data from other studies. In this study, epithelial primary cultures from the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were developed as a model for environmental effects assessment. Cadmium was used as representative of heavy metals. The possible use of this system for pathological studies was also evaluated. The differential cytotoxic effects of cadmium on fish and mammalian epithelial cells in established and primary culture wee assessed by looking at the reduction of colony-forming ability and the reduction in the extent of growth. The purpose of this study was to explore the sociocultural factors which play a role in the process of ending an abusive relationship among Latinas. Dimensional analysis was the method employed for the development of a grounded theory. Aguantando or enduring emerged from this study as pivotal in gaining an understanding of the process of ending an abusive relationship for Latinas. Participants indicated that personal and religious beliefs, the importance of family, and the needs of their children were reasons for aguantando or enduring the abuse. Many urban developers have responded to the challenges of economic development¹ by providing tax incentives to businesses for relocating to urban areas (Bartik, 1995). By not being able to provide the skilled labor force that businesses require, developing communities are not postured to fully take advantage of the newly created job opportunities. Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS) has been widely used as an analytical technique for trace level lead concentration determinations in a variety of applications such as blood, urine and soil. Based on a large amount of research on trace level lead analysis, this study targeted the development of a method for the determination of trace level lead with palladium as the matrix modifier using the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. The most important factors that affect lead absorbance signals are ashing temperature, atomization temperature and modifier concentration. This study sought to evaluate two groups of rats (Dahl salt-sensitive and Dahl salt-resistant) by using either or both 8% high salt rat chow, regular rat chow, 10% ethanol and tap water. This research began by obtaining 8 male Dahl rats (4 salt-sensitive and 4 salt-resistant). The rats followed the following diet. In Group I (salt-sensitive, numbered 1-4), Rat #1 was given rat chow plus tap water. Rat #2 was given 8% high salt rat chow plus tap water. An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Communication Competence And Interactive Strategies For Coping With Romantic Jealousy, Amy J. Bull

Student Work

This thesis investigated the relationship between communication competence and interactive jealousy coping strategies. Two hypotheses were proposed and tested utilizing the Interactive Reactions to Jealousy Scale and a subscale of Wiemann’s Communication Competence Scale. Results indicated a significant positive relationship exists between the level of communication competence and the use of integrative communication, which is considered a positive and helpful coping strategy. However, no significant relationships were found between the level of communication competence and the use of potentially destructive coping strategies. Discussion and interpretation of results and general future areas for research on jealousy and communication competence are proposed.

Distribution patterns of paralarval squid across the continental shelf of Florida were examined based on five years of collections. Squid occurrence patterns were described in relation to coastal, intermediate, and Florida Current (Gulf Stream) water masses by comparing horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of squid species to physical-chemical distribution patterns Twenty-six squid taxa were collected in this study. Representative taxonomic descriptions and illustrations of all taxa were produced to serve as an identification aid for the paralarval squid from the Florida shelf. Professors Binder and Weisberg expound a "cultural criticism" of law that views law as an arena for composing, representing, and contesting identity, and that treats identity as constitutive of the interests that motivate instrumental action. They explicate this critical method by reference to "New Historicist" literary criticism, postmodern social theory, and Nietzchean aesthetics. They illustrate this method by reviewing recent scholarship of two kinds: First, they explore how legal disputes take on expressive meaning for parties and observers against the background of legal norms regulating or recognizing identities. The origin of zoning in America dates back to 1916, when the nation s first comprehensive zoning ordinance was adopted by New York City. This was a time when incompatibie iand uses such as housing and heavy industriai uses were in ciose proximity to one another. A close spatial arrangement between such incompatible uses inevitably led to deleterious effects on the public’s health, welfare and safety. New York City’s zoning ordinance acted as a catalyst in the creation of the 1922 Standard State Zoning Enabling Act. which became a model for local zoning controls throughout the country.
