Previous research suggests that iron acts as a prooxidant to increase the risk of colorectal neoplasia. This study examined effects of dietary intake of iron on colorectal adenoma recurrence using data from an antioxidant clinical trial. All subjects were free of polyps at study entry but had at least one adenoma removed within the 3 months before enrollment. Follow-up colonoseopies were conducted after 1 and 4 years. Patients who developed one or more adenomatous polyps between years 1 and 4 were classified as cases; all others were controls. Dietary iron intake at baseline and at the end of the study …

Two different synthetic routes to poly-hydroxylated chalcones are investigated. The wittig synthesis and protection of the hydroxyl functionalities by forming the methyl ether followed by the base catalyzed Claissen-schmidt reaction and then deprotection were investigated. It was demonstrated that the protection-condensation- deprotection route was more efficient. The antiviral activity of 2,2', 4' - trihydroxychalcone against the HIV virus is also presented.

Rat permeabilized type I soleus fibers displayed a 33% reduction in peak power output and a 36% increase in the free Ca²⁺ concentration required for one-half maximal activation after 14 days of hindlimb non-weight bearing (NWB). We examined the effectiveness of intermittent weight bearing (IWB; consisting of four 10-min periods of weight bearing/day) as a countermeasure to these functional changes. At peak power output, type I fibers from NWB animals produced 54% less force and shortened at a 56% greater velocity than did type I fibers from control weight-bearing animals while type I fibers from the IWB rats produced …

In this research, pulse coupled neural networks (PCNNs) are analyzed and evaluated for use in primate vision modeling. An adaptive PCNN is developed that automatically sets near-optimal parameter values to achieve a desired output. For vision modeling, a physiologically motivated vision model is developed from current theoretical and experimental biological data. The biological vision processing principles used in this model, such as spatial frequency filtering, competitive feature selection, multiple processing paths, and state dependent modulation are analyzed and implemented to create a PCNN based feature extraction network. Themes And Gender Portrayals In Saturday Morning Children's Television Advertisements, Sara C. Karpan

The purpose of this study was to examine the content of advertisements directed toward boys and girls ages six to twelve. Gender portrayals, settings, activities, themes and types of advertisements were variables analyzed in the sample. Data collected from the advertisements were taken from a random sample of four Saturdays of children’s programming between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. CBS, ABC, and FOX were the three networks and Nickelodeon was the cable channel used in the study. Out of 1079 advertisements observed in the sample, 220 were not repeated. Results revealed that the most frequent types of advertisements viewed sold …

Toward A Sociocultural Context For Understanding Violence And Disruption In Black Urban Schools And Communities, Linwood H. Cousins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines violence and disruption in a Black urban school and community. The author argues that an unempowering framework of culture has restricted our understanding of violence and other social issues affecting Black schools and communities. From such a backdrop, a sociocultural framework is presented that captures the strain, solidarity, and contemporary emergences that area part of school, American and Black culture, and a part of the context in which violence occurs in Black schools and communities. Broad implications are posited for human service policy, research, and direct practice.

This article reviews historical developments in the social institution of foster care, leading up to the permanent planning revolution and current family preservation policies in the United States. Success rates of adoption, family preservation, and family reunification programs are examined, and a rationale for the inclusion of "permanent foster care" as an option for children is presented. Permanent foster care has several advantages: 1) it is federally and automatically funded; 2) it can lead to increased supervision of foster parents; 3) it creates more permanence for more children; 4) it promotes attachment through ensuring both child and foster parent stability. …

Caregiver And Clinician Assessment Of Behavioral Disturbances: The California Dementia Behavior Questionnaire, Jeff Victoroff, Kristy A. Nielson, Dan Mungas

As part of a multicenter project to study noncognitive behavioral disturbances in dementia, the authors developed a comprehensive caregiver-rated questionnaire for these behaviors. The authors determined the reliability of caregiver ratings and compared caregiver ratings with clinician ratings using standard instruments. Caregivers showed good test/retest reliability for ratings of all types of patient behavioral disturbance. Caregiver interrater reliability was highest for depression and lowest for psychosis. The correlation between caregiver reports and professional assessments was highest for agitation, intermediate for psychosis, and lowest for depression. The match between caregiver and clinician assessments of patient behaviors appears to vary significantly by …

Staphylococcus aureus chromosomal DNA from 125 methicillin-resistant and 10 methicillin-sensitive clinical isolates was digested with rare-cutting restriction endonucleases and subjected to pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Thirty-nine distinct genomic macrorestriction patterns (GPs) were identified using SmaI; 29 of these patterns are from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

A dendrogram showing percent similarity among the patterns was constructed which revealed the considerable genomic diversity of the collection even though the isolates had been obtained during outbreaks. The majority of the MRSA formed one broad group with two outbreak subclasses. However, 8 of the 29 MRSA GPs (28%) were diverse.

Study Design. L4-L5 intertransverse process fusions were produced with 58 μg, 230 μg, or 920 μg of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 in 20 dogs. Eleven had traditional decortication of posterior elements before insertion of the implant. Nine were left undecorticated. All animals were evaluated 3 months after surgery.

Objectives. To determine whether decortication is a prerequisite for successful fusion in the presence of osteoinductive proteins such as bone morphogenetic protein-2.

In this study four different pre-immunization interventions were compared with respect to their effects on modifying arousal level before an immunization and their effects on the level and duration of distress after the immunization. In addition, the study evaluated whether the infants’ pre-inoculation behavioral state affected their response to a painful stimulus. Data consisting of facial expression, presence or absence of cry, cry duration, and behavioral state were collected prior to, during, and after the inoculation. Forty-two subjects were randomly assigned to one of four soothing conditions. These included: rocking, swaddling, sucking on a pacifier, and a control group.

A detailed hydrogeologic study of the Kalamazoo River and its interaction with the groundwater was completed near Parchment, Michigan. The Kalamazoo River between Portage Creek and Allegan Dam is a Federal superfund site due to PCB contamination trapped in its sediments. The City of Parchment pumps all of its drinking water from a glacial aquifer 850 feet from the Kalamazoo River. This study focused on the hydrogeology and groundwater/surface interaction of the area through the use of surface and downhole geophysics, installation of monitoring wells and peizometers, seepage meters and chemical sampling. Oxygraphic profiles of stressed bovine blood in a temperature controlled 2 ml reactor vessel provide the basis for an investigation of blood's response to various conditions. This response is broken down into an initial response (within 3 seconds), the response over 1 hour and the response over 24 hours. Fast-assay runs which investigate the initial response display a dose-response relationship when chemically stressed by phenol. Phenol concentrations in the 1,000 ppm range indicate a decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) and higher phenol concentrations of over 20,000 an increase in DO. Many gaseous and aqueous waste streams contain multiple organic pollutants at low concentration levels. It is not economical to recover and reuse these compounds; it would be advantageous to destroy them efficiently within the waste stream. This work employed ozone, a powerful oxidizing agent, in concert with a compact membrane-based phase-contacting device. Three types of membrane devices were studied: two of them (the single-phase membrane ozonator and the two-phase membrane ozonator) treated organic pollutants in wastewater, while the third (the integrated absorption-oxidation membrane ozonator) removed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from a gaseous waste stream.

This study investigated the possibility that PC conditions provide more food for the shrimp, possibly by being a eutrophic environment. thus allowing for greater growth. or that salinity, toxicants, or other factors at. The renal system is known to participate in the natural regulation of blood pressure. A renal system model that simulates interaction responses of renal output to arterial blood pressure was developed. The major components of this model are glomerular filtration rate, tubular sodium reabsorption, the renin-angiotensin system, Aldosterone secretion, and antidiuretic hormone secretion. The model's differential equations were coded using Vissim 1.2 student version. It was found that, the renal output increased as glomerular filtration rate, Aldosterone concentration, and blood pressure increased. Conversely, increasing antidiuretic hormone concentration lead to decreased renal output.

The 3D random stacking palletization method is based on volume utilization instead of surface area optimization.
