Distribution Of The Milliped Tylobolus Utahensis Chamberlin, With Remarks On T. Fredericksoni (Causey) (Spirobolida: Spirobolidae), Rowland M. Shelley, Selena B. Bauer

Tylobolus utahensis Chamberlin, the only representative of the genus occurring in the southwestern deserts, ranges from central Inyo County, California, to the western periphery of Kane County, Utah. This distribution roughly corresponds to the northern limit of the Mojave Desert ecosystem and is also shown by the millipede Piedolus utus Chamberlin. (Spirobolida: Atopetholidae) and the centipede Theatops posticus (Say) (Scolopendromorpha: Cryptopidae). Tylobolus fredericksoni Causey, ostensibly from Douglas County, Kansas, is designated "nomen dubium" and disregarded pending collection of fresh material; Narceus gordanus (Chamberlin) is deleted from South Carolina and Tennessee. Contrasting Movement And Activity Of Large Brown Trout And Rainbow Trout In Silver Creek, Idaho, Michael K. Young, Richard A. Wilkison, J. M. Phelps Iii, J. S. Griffith

Recent radiotelemetry studies demonstrated that stream-dwelling trout are mobile, but few have compared sympatric species. We used radiotelemetry to simultaneously monitor positions of 20 brown trout and 21 rainbow trout from May or June 1994 to February 1995 in Silver Creek, a small spring-fed stream in south central Idaho. Our biweekly observations from May to September indicated that rainbow trout had larger home ranges (medians, 606 m v. 131 m) and moved greater distances (medians, 1109 m v. 208 m) than brown trout. Furthermore, rainbow trout used more positions than brown trout (means, 7 v. 3) over this interval. Hourly …

Zoogeographic Affinities Of The Stoneflies (Plecoptera) Of The Raft River Mountains, Utah, Richard M. Houseman, Richard W. Baumann

We examined faunal affinities of the Raft River Mountains using stoneflies (Plecoptera) as indicators. This island-like mountain range is isolated from other major mountain ranges in the Intermountain West by low-elevation, arid regions. Thirty-seven species were recorded from collections from 19 sites in the Raft River Mountains. Cluster analysis demonstrated the Raft River Mountain stonefly assemblage to be most similar to faunas of the Sawtooth and Wasatch mountains, and quite different from that of the Sierra Nevada. An analysis of the distribution patterns of each species, on a family-by-family basis, showed that the Raft River Mountains fauna consists mostly of …

Retrieval of viable bacteria from fossil material dating from the Oligocene back to the Miocene opens the opportunity to study the evolution of prokaryotes through the evolution of their DNA, their physiology, and their ecology. This unique system in which ancient organisms and their genes may be compared directly, rather than by inference, with modern homologues is without precedent. Clearly, however, confirmation of the fossil origin of such isolates must be made in a manner that would allay reasonable skepticism. Experimental data from a chromatographic system involving the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto porous anion-exchange adsorbent particles packed in a column are presented. The parameters that characterize the mass transfer mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion and convection are estimated by fitting the predictions of dynamic mathematical models describing adsorption in column systems having spherical perfusive and purely diffusive adsorbent Particles to the experimental breakthrough data obtained from the column adsorption system. Both linear and nonlinear expressions for the equilibrium isotherm are considered. The values of the transport parameters are estimated in the time domain for the nonlinear adsorption models …

An emv-14-derived, replication-competent ecotropic murine leukemia virus [MuLV], designated AK7, was previously cloned from the AKXL-5 recombinant inbred mouse strain and partially characterized. While genetically encoding for an envelope-derived immunodominant CTL epitope [KSPWFTTL] located in the transmembrane region of p15TM, this virus, unlike the emv-11-derived virus AKR623, fails to be efficiently recognized by AKR/Gross MuLV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes [CTL]. AK7 thus provides the opportunity to study the role of retroviral sequence variations that are located outside of the immunodominant epitope as a mechanism of escape from CTL-mediated immune surveillance. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines that it will designate the whooping crane (Grus americana) population of the Rocky Mountains as an experimental nonessential population and will remove whooping crane critical habitat designations from four National Wildlife Refuges; Bosque del Apache in New Mexico, Monte Vista and Alamosa in Colorado, and Grays Lake in Idaho. The private lands involved are holdings inside refuge boundaries and a 1-mile buffer around Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Service will use this population, and captive-reared sandhill cranes and whooping cranes, in experiments to evaluate methods for introducing whooping cranes into …

CD40 is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily. Studies with human B cells show that the binding of CD154 (gp39, CD40L) to CD40 recruits TNF receptor– associated factor 2 (TRAF2) and TRAF3 to the receptor complex, induces the downregulation of the nonreceptor-associated TRAFs in the cell and induces an increased expression of Fas on the cell surface. Combined signaling through the interluekin 4 receptor and CD40 induces an increased expression of Fas with a commensurate increase in the level of TRAF2, but not TRAF3, that is recruited to the receptor complex. Widespread mobilization of nitrogen into the atmosphere from industry, agriculture, and biomass burning and its subsequent deposition have the potential to alleviate nitrogen limitation of productivity in terrestrial ecosystems, and may contribute to enhanced terrestrial carbon uptake. To evaluate the importance of the spatial distribution of nitrogen deposition for carbon uptake and to better quantify its magnitude and uncertainty NO_y-N deposition fields from five different three-dimensional chemical models, GCTM, GRANTOUR, IMAGES, MOGUNTIA, and ECHAM were used to drive NDEP, a perturbation model of terrestrial carbon uptake. The ability of microorganisms to selectively adsorb various heavy metal ions has been recognized for over a decade. We have investigated the biosorption of lead by an active culture of the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was used to evaluate the different uptake mechanisms in the various subcellular regions. Three were identified; a very fast adsorption mechanism in the cell envelope; a time- dependent deposition reaction on the cell surface; and an adsorption mechanism, also time dependent, on the polyphosphate body inside the cell.
