The purpose of this study is to identify trends in both burial practice and mortality patterning at the Late Antique site of Umm el-Jimal in northern Jordan, through a combined emphasis on mortuary contexts and human skeletal evidence. Data were analyzed and interpreted in three main areas involving: ( 1) the demographic evaluation of biological profiles comprised of sex, age and pathology estimations; (2) life table calculations for crude mortality rates, life expectancies, probability of death and number of individuals dying in time-successive age intervals; and (3) sex-, age- and status-specific patterns in demography and burial structure. Arms control has traditionally dealt with limiting the means of destruction. When the greatest threa to security came from the potential for organized violence inflicted by an external enemy against a state, arms control logically sought to limit that danger. But as the threats to security have become more diffuse, policy-makers will need to draw on a wider repertoire of tools to reduce the potential destructiveness of less organiized threats, and even emerging unintended dangers. The article examines the problems of nuclear proliferation and environmental toxification over the long term, describes why these problems will require a transparency-based approach, and …

This thesis applies Marxist, feminist, and Marxist-feminist sociological theory to the empirical case of the 1995 Nebraska Department of Social Services Interim Policy prohibiting lesbians and gay men from becoming foster parents in Nebraska. The intent of this thesis is to show how the above theories can provide explanations for the policy and answer the central question of why gay men and lesbians have been the target of this discriminatory policy. Caseins are the major protein components of milk. Bovine caseins have been the most thoroughly studied and serve as the principal area of research for the dairy industry. Bovine caseins are composed of several major polypeptide families, (alpha)s1-, (alpha)s1-, (beta)- and K-caseins. The (alpha)s1-caseins constitute 30.6% of bovine milk protein. The distribution of polar and apolar amino acids within each (alpha)s1 -casein molecule tends to be asymmetric, yielding protein molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains that give the caseins excellent functional properties. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the initial effects of the Herbst appliance and determine through the use of common cephalometric radiographs that were optically enhanced and then digitally reproduced, if fossa migration is taking place. Fourteen, (6 male, 8 female), growing patients were treated by the same clinician for the correction of a Class II malocclusion using a modified Herbst appliance. Pretreatment (T₁) standard lateral cephalometric radiographs and post Herbst treatment (T_H) optically enhanced lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken. An in situ multisensor fiber-optic fluorometer (MFF) has been developed to acquire long-term chlorophyll fluorescence measurements in the oceanic bottom boundary layer to characterize the finescale pigment structure at vertical spatial scales comparable to physical measurements. The eight fluorescence sensors of the MFF are composed of dual optical fibers of varying lengths (1.5-8 m), with the fiber ends oriented at 30 degrees to each other and enclosed by a small light baffle. Strobe excitation blue light is passed through one of each pair of optical fibers and stimulated chlorophyll fluorescence is carried back to a photomultiplier. Two sets of four …

The intergenerational problems of indigence, poverty and social dysfunction that plague African societies are inextricably grounded in the broader issue of ethnocentrism in neoclassical microeconomics. Economic anthropology provides a methodological critique of the conceptual limitations of neoclassical micro-behavioral assumptions narrowly imposed on non-westem economic organization. While recognizing non-westem economic praxes, the sociological implications of strict neoclassical microeconomic agency for non-westem socioeconomic development is conspicuously ignored. The critique fails to specifically consider the impact of neoclassical ethnocentrism to non-westem sociocultural organization and improvement.

The focus of this study was on the potential impact of sex and gender-role orientation on one form of evaluation within higher education. Specifically, this study investigated sex and gender-role orientation as they relate to graduate student end-of-course evaluations of professors in the Counselor Education and the Counseling Psychology fields.

Students enrolled in graduate courses in counselor education or counseling psychology at a large university in the Midwest completed the Instructional Development and Effectiveness Assessment (IDEA) end-of-course rating form, a modified version the Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) short form, and a student questionnaire. It has been found that the classroom climate for women is one that is cold, unreceptive, unwelcoming, and even hostile to women. This chilly reception is endured by female undergraduate students, graduate students, and professors. Extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) have been correlated with the induction of cancer in a number of epidemiological studies (Feychting and Ahlbom, 1993; T,m and Lee, 1994; London e t al. 1991; Lovely et al., 1994; Tomenius, 1986; Wertheimer and Leeper, 1979, 1982). During winter 1993, Arizona experienced regional river flooding. Floodwaters at the Hassayampa River eroded floodplains and created a 50-m-wide scour zone available for colonization by pioneer plant species. The slow rate and long duration of the floodwater recession allowed the establishment of spring-germinating native trees (mainly Freemont cottonwood [Populus fremontii] and Gooding willow [Salix gooddingii] as well as summer-germinating species including the introduced salt cedar (Tamarix chinensis and related species). Gooding willow and Freemont cottonwood seedlings showed zonation in the floodplain, while salt cedar was equally abundant in zones with saturated and dry surface soils. …

American Falls Reservoir in southeastern Idaho is an irrigation reservoir used as an inland feeding stopover by many shorebird species. Six exclosure experiments were conducted during the 1990 drawdown period to investigate shorebird predation impact on benthic macroinvertebrate populations. The study sites differed in sediment composition, sediment slope, invertebrate densities, and shorebird abundance. Shorebird predation significantly affected invertebrate densities in only 1 of 6 experiments (Aberdeen Mouth). This site had higher sediment slope and a lower water recedence than other study sites, resulting in concentration of shorebird predation on a small area of newly exposed sediment. Large areas of western rangeland are presently dominated by alien annual weeds such as Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). These communities resist succession to perennial communities primarily because the annuals are competitively superior to establishing perennial seedlings and they promote fires that favor weeds over perennials. Succession may be further slowed, however, by low rates of seed dispersal into annual grasslands. We investigated the role of lagomorphs (Sylvilagus nuttalli, Nuttall's cottontail; S. audubonii, desert cottontail; and Lepus californicus, black-tailed jackrabbit) in seed dispersal across an ecotone between an open juniper woodland and an annual grassland. Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) brood-rearing sites have been described for portions of their range, but brood-rearing habitat use and characteristics of brood-rearing sites used by Rio Grande Wild Turkeys (M. g. intermedia) in the Pacific Northwest were unknown. We described cover types at 362 brood-rearing sites and measured habitat characteristics at 64 of these sites used by a recently established Rio Grande Wild Turkey population in southwestern Oregon during May–September 1989 and 1990. Hens with broods used 9 of 10 available cover types. Meadows, mixed hardwood/conifer woodlands, and savannas were used more often than expected (47% …

Large falcons (genus Falco) do not build their own nests and, in North America at least, usually nest on high cliffs. Occasionally they nest in abandoned stick nests built by another large bird on the cliff. In Asia and particularly South Africa, they sometimes nest in stick nests on electrical transmission towers. This use of electric transmission towers was recently (1980) reported for the Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus) in North America but is unknown, except for 1 anecdotically documented use of an "electric-power pole" at the turn of century in California, for the Peregrine Falcon (Falco …

Effects Of Myofibrogranuloma On Serum Calcium Levels In Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum), Craig A. Shoemaker, Harry L. Holloway Jr.

The effect of myofibrogranuloma (skeletal muscle degeneration) on serum calcium levels in spawning walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) was examined. Mean serum calcium levels for healthy male walleye (11.7 ± 1.5 mg/100 ml serum) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than calcium levels for healthy female walleye (15.4 ± 1.8 mg/100 ml serum). Significant increases (P < 0.1) in serum calcium were seen between healthy male and myofibrogranuloma-diseased male walleye (13.6 ± 2.1 mg/100 ml serum) and between healthy and myofibrogranuloma-diseased female walleye (20.2 ± 3.7 mg/100 ml serum). Elevations seen in mean serum calcium levels suggest the muscle degeneration and subsequent granuloma formation in later stages of myofibrogranuloma have a significant effect on serum calcium.
