Emissions From Smoldering Combustion Of Biomass Measured By Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Robert J. Yokelson, Ronald A. Susott, Darold E. Ward, James J. Reardon, David W. T. Griffith

Biomass samples from a diverse range of ecosystems were burned in the Intermountain Fire Sciences Laboratory open combustion facility. Midinfrared spectra of the nascent emissions were acquired at several heights above the fires with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) coupled to an open multipass cell. In this report, the results from smoldering combustion during 24 fires are presented including production of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ethene, ethyne, propene, formaldehyde, 2-hydroxyethanal, methanol, phenol, acetic acid, formic acid, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and carbonyl sulfide. Human-Computer Partnership In Decision-Support Systems: Some Design Guidelines, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
The design of useful human-computer collaborative decision-support systems requires some understanding of the behavioral and organizational characteristics of human problem solving practices. This paper identifies the principal areas in which computer-based decision making assistance is particularly attractive and critically examines several human problem solving traits that may not be appropriate for direct emulation in the computer-assisted environment. In particular, the author examines the manner in which emotions and hierarchical leadership structures could unnecessarily inhibit the realization of the full potential of a human-computer partnership. Finally, a number of guiding principles are proposed for the design of computer-based decision-support systems.

VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Control Of Hemopoietic Stem Cell Numbers: Mapping Of A Stem Cell Gene, Gerald De Haan, Gary Van Zant

We evaluated in vivo interactions between extrinsic (growth factor induced) and intrinsic (genetically determined) effectors of mouse primitive hemopoietic stem cell proliferation and numbers. Accordingly, stem cell frequency and cell cycle kinetics were assessed in eight strains of inbred mice using the cobblestone area–forming cell (CAFC) assay. A strong inverse correlation was observed between mouse lifespan and the number of autonomously cycling progenitors (CAFC day 7) in the femur. The population size of primitive stem cells (CAFC day 35) varied widely (up to sevenfold) among strains, unlike total CAFC day 7 numbers (cycling and quiescent), which were similar. This study was designed to validate and estimate accuracy and precision of ages determined from scales sampled from coastal Cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki clarki in Southeast Alaska; to model growth of these fish; and to evaluate the sensitivity of sustained yield estimates to aging error. Cutthroat trout scales sampled in Southeast Alaska did not always form an annulus during the first year, although the number of circuli up to the first apparent annulus was a good indicator that one was missing. Reader error generally resulted in significant underaging of older fish from scales. However, aging error models developed in this …

A Temporal Study Of The Phytoplankton Spring Bloom In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Alison Emmett Ward

The phytoplankton bloom in southwest Prince William Sound, Alaska began in early April, declined by May and had a small recovery in June 1995 and 1996. Phytoplankton bloom was nutrient-limited in April and phytoplankton biomass was controlled by zooplankton grazing in May. The bloom consisted of 80 % microplankton; the post bloom was predominandy flagellates, followed by a small diatom recovery. A seasonal succession in the diatom community occurred from Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira spp. and Chaetoceros spp. in April to Rhizosolenia fragilissima in June. In 1989, the Chisana caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd in the northern Wrangell Mountains, Alaska declined substantially in population size and productivity. Summers were significantly warmer and slightly drier during years the herd was declining (1989-1995) compared with years when the herd was stable or increasing (1981-1988). We increased air temperature and decreased precipitation with a plastic tent, decreased light intensity with a shade cloth, and increased precipitation by adding water to determine climatic effects on nutrient content and biomass of caribou forage during summer in 1994 and 1995 in the subarctic tundra. Walrus Feeding: A Re-Examination, Gay Glover Sheffield

A new approach for analyzing walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) diet was examined. Controlled gastric digestion experiments determined the relative rates at which different kinds of food items became unidentifiable. The ability to identify prey items varied within and among prey types. The laboratory experiments provided a new basis for examining diet data by characterizing the condition of stomach samples based on the rates at which different prey types were digested. Stomach content data acquired during 1952-1991 from 798 Pacific walruses were compiled, and interpretations about feeding habits were re-examined.
