Regional Socioeconomic And Sociocultural Differences Among U.S. Latinos: The Effects Of Historical And Contemporary Latino Immigration/Migration Streams, Ed A. Munoz, Suzanne T. Ortega Oct 1997

Regional Socioeconomic And Sociocultural Differences Among U.S. Latinos: The Effects Of Historical And Contemporary Latino Immigration/Migration Streams, Ed A. Munoz, Suzanne T. Ortega

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we explore two potential sources of variation in the life experiences of Latinos in the United States: region of the country in which a group resides and national origin. Although scholars have recognized the theoretical importance of these two variables, few studies have empirically examined the relationship of region of the country and national origin to socioeconomic variables such as occupation, education, and income or to cultural variables such as bilingualism and English language proficiency. Data from the 1990 U.S. Census 5% Public Use Micro Sample show that both the social structural and cultural experiences of Latinos …

Review Of The Texas Challenge: Population Change And The Future Of Texas Edited By Steve H. Murdock, Nazrul Hoque, Martha Michael, Steve White, And Beverly Pecotte, Robert K. Holz Oct 1997

Review Of The Texas Challenge: Population Change And The Future Of Texas Edited By Steve H. Murdock, Nazrul Hoque, Martha Michael, Steve White, And Beverly Pecotte, Robert K. Holz

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Steve H. Murdock, in collaboration with four secondary authors, has produced an intriguing but somewhat puzzling book on population change and the future of Texas. While population studies are certainly within the authors' domain of Rural Sociology, Texas is no longer a "rural" state based on population. Over eighty percent of the state's population now resides in urban areas, although Texas laws, traditions, and attitudes still honor and project a rural mystique. This might have been emphasized as part of the Texas Challenge.

Throughout the text the authors emphasize four major trends in Texas population: the changing rate of …

Review Of Beyond Subsistence: Plains Archaeology And The Postprocessual Critique Edited By Philip Duke And Michael C. Wilson, Alan J. Osborn Oct 1997

Review Of Beyond Subsistence: Plains Archaeology And The Postprocessual Critique Edited By Philip Duke And Michael C. Wilson, Alan J. Osborn

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Philip Duke and Michael Wilson have compiled a well-written, well-organized book designed to "demonstrate the potential of postprocessualism to Plains archaeologists." It contains an editors' introduction, eleven scholarly contributions, as well as two commentaries. The editors suggest that the success of this "new paradigm or research strategy" will be assessed on the basis of its "second-generation scholars" and what they contribute to the "intellectual hybridization" of postprocessualism.

The reader must be aware that postprocessual archaeology does not consist of a coherent body of theory, models, concepts, or robust methods for data collection and analysis. Instead, it is a postmodern response …

Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury Oct 1997

Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using a community classification based on key demographic and geographic factors and data from the U.S. Census, analyses from 212 small communities indicate significant inter- and intra-state differences. The communities studied were located in two states within the North Central Region. The sample was limited to incorporated places with populations between 1,000 and 2,500. Several commonly-held ideas about small communities are either challenged or confirmed by this research. Similarities and differences among the communities as well as between the states support the conclusion that small communities have diverse characteristics. Not all small communities ofthis size are geographically isolated places with …

Developing Urban Deer Management Plans: The Need For Public Education, Deborah Green, Glen R. Askins, Phillip D. West Oct 1997

Developing Urban Deer Management Plans: The Need For Public Education, Deborah Green, Glen R. Askins, Phillip D. West

Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 8th (1997)

Independent public opinion surveys concerning urban deer (Odocoileus virginianus) management were conducted in two Virginia communities. A total of 346 citizens were interviewed in two Random Digit Dial telephone surveys. In addition to questions concerning management techniques and their administration, participants were asked about their experience with deer, their awareness of problems with deer in the area, and their enjoyment of deer. In both localities, non-lethal controls were preferred over lethal controls; trapping and relocation, fencing, repellents, and birth control measures were favored by a majority of residents. The only lethal control acceptable to residents in both communities …

Decentering Whiteness, Peter Mclaren Oct 1997

Decentering Whiteness, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"I wish to make two claims in this article. One is that multicultural education has largely refused to acknowledge how imperialism, colonialism, and the transnational circulation of capitalism influences the ways in which many oppressed minority groups cognitively map their paradigm of democracy in the United States. The other claim is that the present focus on diversity in multicultural education is often misguided because the struggle for ethnic diversity makes progressive political sense only if it can be accompanied by a sustained analysis of the cultural logics of white supremacy; While these two claims mutually inform each other, it is …

We Know Better Than We Do: A Policy Framework For Child Welfare Reform, Donald N. Duquette, Sandra K. Danzinger, Joan M. Abbey, Kristin S. Seefeldt Oct 1997

We Know Better Than We Do: A Policy Framework For Child Welfare Reform, Donald N. Duquette, Sandra K. Danzinger, Joan M. Abbey, Kristin S. Seefeldt

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The need for comprehensive reform of child welfare policies and systems has long been evident. This Article reports observations from the WK Kellogg Foundation-sponsored Families for Kids Initiative that seeks to expand services and support to families and reduce the time children spend in temporary care. The authors first provide an overview of the need for reforms such as those proposed by this initiative, suggesting that many child welfare studies, critiques, and proposed reforms have had similar objectives. The authors highlight lessons learned from how these reform goals are being developed, implemented, and practiced in ongoing programs across the nation …

Children Without Parents In Ghanaian Society: My Internship At Osu Children's Home, Kristen Curtis Oct 1997

Children Without Parents In Ghanaian Society: My Internship At Osu Children's Home, Kristen Curtis

African Diaspora ISPs

This Independent Study Project attempts to uncover the workings of the orphanage system in Ghana, namely Osu Children's Home. My objectives were to develop a concrete understanding of the Home the physical organization, the goals and if they are being accomplished, staff involvement and the children of the Home. With background literature on child development as a guide, I chose to examine the following three behaviors exhibited from the children: (1) aggression, (2) attachment, and (3) play patterns. I was interested in finding if any differences were present in the three areas between the children in the Home and the …

The Treatment Of Psychiatric Illness In Ghana, Brandee Burler Oct 1997

The Treatment Of Psychiatric Illness In Ghana, Brandee Burler

African Diaspora ISPs

This study was conducted to investigate contemporary orthodox and unorthodox methods of treatment as well as the factors affecting one's decision to seek treatment. During the colonial era the mentally ill, then referred to as lunatics, were segregated and incarcerated with common criminals. It wasn't until 1888 that the colonial government passed a legislative ordinance to provide for the custody of "lunatics" in an asylum in the former High Court in Victoriaborg, Accra. Prior to the appearance of Western orthodox medicine, traditional healers, most often spiritualists and herbalists, before coming to the hospital, treated all ailments, including mental illness, locally. …
