Comparative Analysis Of The Turkish And European Union Passenger Ferry Market In The Eastern Mediterranean, Hatice Funda Yercan

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis covers Turkish and EU maritime policies for the passenger ferry industries. It concentrateso n the positioning of ferry operatorsi n the passengefre rry market in the Eastern Mediterranean. A general background to Turkey and to its maritime industry is drawn before developing a model. A positioning model is developed in a quantitative approach to this research. Furthermore, it is operationalised by using the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) Technique within multivariate analysis. A specific programme, MDPREF, from the MDS(X) Series of MDS Programmes is used for the calculation and illustration of the analysis. The Positionso f the Turkish and EU …

Counter-Urbanisation, Housing And Households In Cornwall, Carol Williams Jan 1997

Counter-Urbanisation, Housing And Households In Cornwall, Carol Williams

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Over the last thirty years Cornwall has experienced a dramatic population expansion. Population growth has had effects in many areas, but particularly in housing. The increased demand for housing from those migrating into the area has inflated house prices, yet the Cornish economy is afflicted by low wage levels and high unemployment rates, creating a `mortgage gap' for long term residents. This coupled with the decline in availability of both publicly and privately rented accommodation has resulted in what has been termed a housing `crisis' (George 1987, Deacon et al. 1988, Lennon 1991, Williams 1993). It has been suggested that …

Performing The Self : An Examination Of The Relationships Between Concepts Of Identity And Performance, Matthew Thomas Wellings Jan 1997

Performing The Self : An Examination Of The Relationships Between Concepts Of Identity And Performance, Matthew Thomas Wellings

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis sets out to examine the idea that self-identity can be coherently viewed as a performance event. If such a proposition is supportable, it would seem to argue for attention to be paid to the nature of the activity of performing as a means to better understanding the processes of human identity. Beginning with an analysis of an early example of such a theoretical position, this thesis examines some of the central issues involved in viewing the self as performative. The agenda dictating the direction of this analysis can be summarised as an effort to provide a model of …

A Strategic Choice Model For Asia-Pacific Shipping, Jeffrey Edward Hawkins Jan 1997

A Strategic Choice Model For Asia-Pacific Shipping, Jeffrey Edward Hawkins

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The importance of strategy to an organisation's competitiveness is widely acknowledged in the strategic management literature. However, although strategy research has become substantial in other areas, the same cannot be said with the shipping industry. Very littie is known about how shipowners choose competitive strategies or what strategies they pursue under certain environmental conditions. Of what is available, most focus on Northern Europe and Northem America, with scant regard for the Asia-Pacific, which has become a major shipping power in recent decades. This study was, therefore, conducted to address these gaps in the literature. It analysed the strategic choices made …

The Social Location Of Widows, Mary Barnaby Jan 1997

The Social Location Of Widows, Mary Barnaby

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis draws critically upon the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu to develop a theory of the social location of widows. The thesis presents widowhood as a set of objective social relations regulated by the objective structures of marriage, gender and death. In the course of the discussion a critical analysis of Bourdieu's theorization of gender is advanced. The potential of Bourdieu's work for feminist theory is identified, particularly in his explanation of the mechanism of gender relations, however, the analysis also demonstrates that the phallocentric presuppositions embedded within Bourdieu's theorization of gender have to be addressed before the theory's potential …

Predicament Of The New Primary Teacher : Educating Teachers As Intellectuals In Changing Times, Roderick Mackenzie Jan 1997

Predicament Of The New Primary Teacher : Educating Teachers As Intellectuals In Changing Times, Roderick Mackenzie

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is based on a case study of the predicament of new primary teachers in a time of rapid and multiple change. It examines the proposal that emerging teachers should be supported as intellectuals in responding to the inherited collision of education policy and practice within postmodernity. Action research methodology was employed to investigate a small scale attempt to support student teachers as intellectuals in their final period of the BEd. Some participants were followed into the first year of teaching, using an ethnographic and autoethnographic methodology to evaluate and elaborate the initial proposal. The study shows that emerging …

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn Jan 1997

Race And Birthweight: The Influence Of Socio-Economic Status And Utilization Of Prenatal Care, Lena C. Frennborn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine how much of the variance in birthweight can be explained by socio-economic status and utilization of prenatal care in Blacks and Whites. Rather than defining race in genetic terms, race was understood here as a social construction. The methodological approach was an analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle IV, 1988. The first, singleton, live birth for each interviewed woman was included, resulting in a sample of 911 women, of whom 313 were Black women and 598 White women.

Consistent with previous research, Black mothers were twice as likely to …

The Concept Of Overcoming The Political: An Intellectual Biography Of Ss-Standartenfuehrer And Professor Dr. Reinhard Hoehn, 1904-1944, Joshua A. Katz Jan 1997

The Concept Of Overcoming The Political: An Intellectual Biography Of Ss-Standartenfuehrer And Professor Dr. Reinhard Hoehn, 1904-1944, Joshua A. Katz

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the interconnection between the ideas and political activities of Reinhard Hoehn during the Weimar and Nazi Eras. In particular, Hoehn's political writings, which are closely analyzed, indicate a continuing commitment to the ideals of the Conservative Revolution through his changes in political affiliations. It serves as a case study of the much debated relationship between the Conservative Revolution and Nazism. While developing as a radical right-wing Weimar intellectual, Hoehn joined a succession of Revolutionary Conservative Kampfbuende. His political writings and affiliations showed a commitment to the destruction of liberal conceptions in politics, sociology, and legal theory. His ultimate …

Healthy Start: Strengthening The Lives Of Children And Families, Michelle Hardy

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

My project consists of an examination of an initiative called Healthy Start, which was developed to better the lives of children and families. The objective of Healthy Start is to make improvements with children and families in terms of school performance and physical and social well-being. The Healthy Start Support Services for Children Act (Senate Bill 620) is California's first statewide effort to place comprehensive support services at the school site. During my study, I investigated five Healthy Start sites in Northern California, four of which are located in Humboldt county. My reason for doing this project is to evaluate …

Truth Or Consequences: The Dilemma Of Asserting The Fifth Amendment Privilege Against Self-Incrimination In Bankruptcy Proceedings, Craig Peyton Gaumer, Charles L. Nail Jr. Jan 1997

Truth Or Consequences: The Dilemma Of Asserting The Fifth Amendment Privilege Against Self-Incrimination In Bankruptcy Proceedings, Craig Peyton Gaumer, Charles L. Nail Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

This article discusses both the manner in which issues regarding the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination may arise in bankruptcy cases and the many potential consequences of asserting the privilege. Parts II and III provide a general overview of the bankruptcy process and the Fifth Amendment, respectively. Part IV examines whether and to what extent the privilege against self-incrimination protects corporations and their directors, officers, and shareholders. Part V offers a similar examination of the extent to which the Fifth Amendment protects against the compelled production of documents. Parts VI and VII address the closely related topics of invocation and …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz Jan 1997

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

As Hornstein observed in the beginning of the 1990s, the "enduring pattern" of instruction in social studies lessons is that which revolves around traditional "teacher centred and text-centred" teaching strategies (Hornstein, 1990). However, other research programs which have investigated the status of social studies (Cuban, 1991; Good and Harmon, 1987; Haladyna, Shaughnessy and Redsun, 1982a) have indicated that the core subject rates well with students when teaching strategies are interactive, inductive, and student centred. As Hutchens (1993) found, students became "hooked" on social studies when it involved cooperative learning, and student research strategies. In 1995, Moroz, Baker and McDonald, reported …
