Study Of Adolescents: Dynamics Of Perception, Attitude, Knowledge And Use Of Reproductive Health Care, Syed Jahangeer Haider, Shamsun Nehar Saleh, Nahid Kamal, Alan Gray
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Knowledge, perceptions, and behavior related to reproductive health (RH) and sexual matters underlie all the conditions that family planning/maternal and child health (FP/MCH) programs address, thus these are important issues for FP researchers, population policymakers, and service providers. To achieve significant levels of fertility or mortality declines, participation of adolescents in reproductive health programs, including FP/MCH, is essential. Studies focusing on sexuality and attitudes of adolescents on RH, and the interacting influences of family, community, and the social sector developmental programs (health, FP/MCH, education, women’s development) would give useful revelations. This report presents findings from a study that was designed …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Reproductive Control In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman
Reproductive Control In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The controversial state-sponsored family planning program officially began in South Africa in 1974. Although the government did not implement the program on a racial basis, the program was widely believed to be linked with white fears of growing black numbers, and was attacked by detractors as a program of social and political control. In spite of the hostile environment, black women’s use of services steadily increased. Using historical and anthropological evidence, this paper delineates the links between the social and political context of racial domination and individual fertility behavior. It argues that the quantitative ‘success’ of the family planning program …

Transition To Adulthood Of Female Factory Workers: Some Evidence From Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Ian Diamond, Ruchira Tabassum Naved, Margaret Newby
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The rapidly expanding sector of garment manufacturing for export is unusual for Bangladesh in that it employs young, unmarried women in large numbers. This paper examines data from a study on garment workers in Bangladesh to explore the implications of work for the early socialization of young women. For the first time young women are given an alternative to lives where they move directly from childhood into adulthood through early marriage and childbearing. Work creates a period of transition as contrasted with the abrupt assumption of adult roles at very young ages that marriage and childbearing mandate. It is argued …
Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom
Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Both men and women make important contributions to the production of children, yet demographic studies of fertility and family planning have tended to focus on women alone. This paper traces the development of demography’s emphasis on women and describes how the limitations of its theoretical approaches to reproduction and empirical neglect of men have been mutually reinforcing. The paper is structured around four aims: 1) to describe why men have had a relatively low profile as subjects in demographic research on reproduction; 2) to explain growing interest in studying men’s roles; 3) to evaluate existing research on men in developing …
Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy [Arabic], Michael P. Todaro
Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy [Arabic], Michael P. Todaro
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
During the past three decades, the cities of the developing world in general, and of Africa in particular, have witnessed a remarkable and in many ways unprecedented demographic growth spurt. Despite some slowdown in rates of increase in the past few years as a result of falling wages, contracting social services, and changing demographic trends, contemporary urban areas remain the growth poles of economic progress and the lightning rods of political and social unrest. Nowhere is this dilemma more visible nor the resulting problems more intractable than in the crowded cities of sub-Saharan Africa, where projections of urban population growth …
Population And Poverty: A Review And Restatement, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Population And Poverty: A Review And Restatement, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Worldwide in the 1990s over one billion persons are estimated to have a purchasing power of below a dollar per day, the conventional demarcation of “absolute poverty.” Other dimensions of poverty, extending beyond income measures to encompass a person’s broader capabilities and social functioning, are less empirically accessible. Poverty is commonly thought to be associated with high fertility and rapid population growth (regionally, South Asia and Africa have the highest poverty rates), but that view finds little support in the extensive statistical research literature on population and poverty. However, a clear-cut depiction of such an institutionally contingent relationship is not …

Empowering The Next Generation: Girls Of The Maqattam Garbage Settlement [Arabic], Marie Assaad, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This edition of SEEDS explores the challenge of extending earning opportunities and access to valued social roles to young women in the garbage settlement of Maqattam, Egypt. This edition furthermore underscores the degree to which livelihood programs must confront the social circumstances—such as health, marriage, and cultural and family traditions—that play a major role in shaping girls' current and future economic prospects.
How Will We Regulate Genetic Enhancement, Maxwell J. Mehlman
How Will We Regulate Genetic Enhancement, Maxwell J. Mehlman
Faculty Publications
Genetic enhancement technologies present difficult and novel regulatory issues, including the problem of measuring and comparing risks and benefits and dealing with the impact of these technologies on social values. This Article describes and evaluates the potential approaches that may be taken to regulate these technologies. The author concludes that a variety of approaches will be necessary, involving self-regulation, government restrictions on access and use, licensing, and a national lottery.

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine
Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 14, Issue 03, published in 1997. The theme of this issue is Northern Appalachia. This issue turns its focus to Northern Appalachia, exploring questions of regional identity, industrial legacy, and cultural self-definition in areas often overlooked within broader Appalachian discourse. Through articles on the emergence of Northern Appalachian Studies, debates over cities such as Pittsburgh's regional identity, coalfield economic transformation, dairy farming struggles, environmental art initiatives, and alternative educational models, it examines how northern communities negotiate heritage amid social and economic change. Essays, fiction, poetry, and reviews further reflect on belonging, memory, …

Gender Blindness And The Hunter Doctrine, Ryan Goodman
Gender Blindness And The Hunter Doctrine, Ryan Goodman
Faculty Articles
The recent reinstatement of the California Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI) withdrew many opportunities for racial minorities and women in important public sectors. As a legal matter, the 9th Circuit decision that justified this result - Coalition for Economic Equity v. Wilson (1997) - rests on questionable grounds. The appeals employed novel reasoning to distinguish the Supreme Court's "political structure" equal protection precedent - the so-called Hunter doctrine - which invalidates initiatives that obstruct minorities seeking beneficial local legislation. The 9th Circuit held that the Hunter doctrine provides "equal protection rights against political obstructions to equal protection," not "equal protection rights …

Interests And Rights Of The Interracial Family In A Multiracial Racial Classification, The Proceedings Of The Third Annual Mid-Atlantic People Of Color Legal Scholarship Conference February 13-15, 1997: Part 2, Tanya K. Hernandez
Faculty Scholarship
The public dissemination of census data invites battles over how human beings will be known. One census battle that has been at the forefront of the public debate is the demand for a "multiracial" category. The multiracial classification, as proposed, would be one of the race categories a respondent could choose in lieu of those currently listed by the Office of Management of Budget (OMB): American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black, White, or Other. The stated aim of the new racial classification is to obtain a more specific census count of the number of mixed-race persons …

A Seminar On The Dynamics, Prevention, And Legal Implications Of Clergy Sexual Misconduct, Jorge E. Rico
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Clergy sexual misconduct has become a major problem among Christian denominations. It involves violation of expectations and the breaking of public trust. There is also a growing awareness in our society of the legal implications of clergy sexual misconduct. This present study was to prepare, present, and evaluate a seminar for pastors on the dynamics, prevention, and legal implications of clergy sexual misconduct.
Method
Research was done to help ministers understand the dynamics, prevention, and legal implications of clergy sexual misconduct. Then, a seminar was conducted in four areas of the Oregon Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. This seminar was …
Falling From The Faith : Causes Of Membership Dropout In The Grenada Mission Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Clinton P. Lewis
Falling From The Faith : Causes Of Membership Dropout In The Grenada Mission Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Clinton P. Lewis
Doctor of Ministry Projects
This study endeavored to find the causes of membership dropout in the Grenada Mission of Seventh-day Adventists and the ways that it may be reduced. The dissertation investigates the biblical and theological basis for seeking to reduce dropouts by undertaking a study of the Great Commission and God’s concern for dropouts. A select review of relevant literature on dropouts was done in an effort to get an overview of the problem in various denominations and regions, as well as to receive insights in reducing dropouts.
One hundred and sixty-nine questionnaires were completed by dropouts, and twenty-one by church leaders in …
Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz
Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
In many Seventh-day Adventist churches in North America patterns of non involvement among the youth were observed. Young people were attending church on Sabbath, but almost none of them were leaders. The objective of this dissertation was to identify biblical principles for the development of a youth ministry in which leaders build responsible servant leaders and encourage young people to grow, learn, and use their gifts in Christian ministry.
Method
The Scriptures were searched for a biblical background for youth work and principles for successful youth involvement. The word “youth” was analyzed in the Old and New Testaments together …
