An Intervening Cause Counterexample To Railton’S Dnp Model Of Explanation, Stuart Gluck, Steven Gimbel Dec 1997

An Intervening Cause Counterexample To Railton’S Dnp Model Of Explanation, Stuart Gluck, Steven Gimbel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Peter Railton (1978) has introduced the influential deductive-nomological-probabilistic (DNP) model of explanation which is the culmination of a tradition of formal, nonpragmatic accounts of scientific explanation. The other models in this tradition have been shown to be susceptiblet o a class of counterexamplesin volvingi nterveningc auses which speak against their sufficiency. This treatment has never been extended to the DNP model; we contend that the usual form of these counterexamples is ineffective in this case. However, we develop below a new version which overcomes these difficulties. Thus we claim that all of the models in this tradition, DNP included, have …

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act allows for deregulation of the natural gas industry if certain conditions are met. These conditions are that thirty-three percent of the market must be served by marketers of gas, eighteen percent of which must be served by at least five marketers that are not affiliated with the distribution company given a monopoly over the distribution of natural gas. Under these conditions, the market is deemed to be competitive and consumers of gas will be notified that they should choose a marketer to provide gas service for them. The Public Service Commission will no longer set the rates for …

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act defines and prohibits partial-birth abortions. The Act subjects anyone who performs such an abortion and, thereby ends the life of a human fetus, to criminal liability. The Act excepts from prohibition a partial-birth abortion, which is performed and is necessary to save the life of the mother. The Act also provides that, subject to certain exceptions, the father and maternal grandparents have a civil cause of action when such an abortion is performed. The Act excludes the mother of the fetus from criminal liability under this Act for undergoing such an abortion.

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act also specifies which securities the Director of the Office of Treasury and Fiscal Services may invest in by selling and purchasing obligations under agreements to later resell or repurchase the obligations.

1997.2 - Opera House Dallas, Martin Price, Patrick Cox

School of Architecture Student Projects - Archive

Design work from the 1997 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Opera House. Patrick Cox. The site is in Dallas adjacent to the Meyerson Concert Hall. Rhythmic lines form patterns of naturally flowing paths of movement, dramatically expressed in the approach to the design of the entry, lobby, and seating spaces. Seating flexibly pivots and moves with a hydraulic system to accommodate both traditional staging as well as experimental staging, where the stage thrusts forward from the proscenium into the audience. The exterior form pivots and spirals upward, expressing the various functions …

"Doamne Milueste": The Life Of A Contemporary Orthodox Christian Monastery, David George Subu Dec 1997

"Doamne Milueste": The Life Of A Contemporary Orthodox Christian Monastery, David George Subu

Masters Theses

The Holy Dormition Monastery demonstrates the Orthodox Christian appeal to the tradition and authority of the Church Fathers, Mothers, and the ultimate source of power, the Holy Trinity, which is enacted on the several complimentary and interactive levels of monastic history, spatial and architectural arrangements, personal relationships and community structure, and liturgical or ritual activity cycles. This appeal to authority and power is achieved most notably through a complex system of ritual acts that are typically "embedded" into the many facets of the monastic life which simultaneously orients the monastic participant towards the correct, "Orthodox" relationships with those sources of …
